I use my single HomePod for appletv, it doesn't sound all that great. Have you noticed a mark improvement in quality with a second HomePod + stereo pairing?

Yes. I had two in separate areas of my home but now with the stereo pairing I moved them into the family room together and WOW. The sound field is incredible. Totally different that having only one.

Edit. The bass is noticeably louder, deeper and crisper. In a really good way. And the stereo (left right) performance is mixed perfectly. I would say a very, very high end sound for $700.

If it has more than one speaker and sends info from both channels through them by bouncing sounds from walls in a way to create a defined image it can't be mono even it is from one location. Those kind of speakers are different and people need to change their ways of defining things. As for video for audio, not sure why it would make a diff unless the Homepod is treating the sources differently (Airplay vs streamed directly).

It's not, both channels go to the speaker and it bounces those channels off the wall, so it's not.
Everything else you just said is just blah blah blah, you're response tells me it's a lot of self aggrandizement.
I don’t know why you’re obsessed with this narrative but... when you watch a video you need (at least) left/right separation to achieve stereo because where things are happening on screen should correspond to which direction the sound is coming from. In music (except for the few songs that pan left/right, which is generally just a gimmick as they can’t reproduce this effect in a live concert) there isn’t any sound that necessarily has to come from the left or right so the processing and beamforming they use which separates elements into near and far instead of left and right sounds great and I wouldn’t consider it mono.

Both of your posts show me you don't know how sound works, at all. I figured you didn't, but thanks for the confirmation. It's mono by the way. No need to deflect. I was just letting you know the facts in case you tried to spin it another way.

P.s. your post history wreaks of self aggrandizement and not being able to carry a decent conversation with folks without resorting to bashing/being condescending in some form. Have a great day :rolleyes:

Any sign of this promised feature?

Furthermore, with AirPlay integration in Home, users can operate a shared “Up Next” play queue, meaning everyone can add their favorite songs to the queue from their own device.

Never mind. I was getting one anyway :{
[doublepost=1527657787][/doublepost]
It seems to be working for others. Can you test this advice?

Reports on Reddit say bass has been adjusted again (to be closer to pre 11.3).

YO - Good news. It was just that my Apple TV had not updated to the new software yet. For whatever reason, automatic updates don't update for me. Just got it set up and it sounds really good. Even at not super loud volume, hearing a lot of detail I wasn't before on movie.

Stereo sound is amazing for music.

Apple TV video output is very weak though. Not any different than a single HomePod. This was disappointing.

It works fine with Apple TV.
Yeah, I heard. Had me worried for a while though. Not enough to stop me from ordering a second one ;)

Do you have Auto Surround or Stereo set up in sound settings on the AppleTV? Apparently setting it to Stereo will fix the output volume.

has bass been restored on one single one like before the 11.3 uodate that toke bass away, or is it only better with 2, so with one on 11.4 is it better sound now

I think it’s much better with a single HomePod on 11.4. Much closer to pre-11.3 although maybe not all the way there (80%?).

Called Strereno :)

Seriously though, I am mystified.
How did Apple ever think that making a mono system would be acceptable ?

It is what it is. You'll never get good stereo imaging from single unit speakers anyway because you need physical separation between left and right channels and they don't provide that. I have a Klipsch The One and even though it's stereo, it might as well be mono because the drivers are so close together. That's what floorstanding speakers in the living room and bookshelves in the bedroom are for.
Shrugs, some people just don't know the difference between stereo and mono, just like they don't know the difference between great sounding speaker, and adulterated sound.

I use my single HomePod for appletv, it doesn't sound all that great.

Seems like I tried that when I first got my HomePod in February and the volume level sucked.

Same issues for me
Now airplay from my iPad to my apple TV will only show picture not sound as well through the HomePod.
Playing Youtube / netflix etc from the apple TV, the sound will play out of HP. As of the new update airplay from my iPad does not working for both picture and sound.

Same. iPad Pro, ATV 4K, AirPlay a movie from iPad to ATV, picture but no sound.

Update: Updated the ATV 4K to tvOS 11.4 and that resolved the problem.

when asked "Hey Siri, play 90's music everywhere" it will only play on 3 HomePods but not AppleTVs... am I saying it wrong?
It plays on my two HomePod and the A.V. receiver attached to my Apple TV just fine. Obviously you need to make sure that your Apple TV has been updated, but also you may need to enter a 4 digit code that may appear on your Apple TV screen onto your iPhone when prompted. You should only need to do it the first time.

Hallelujah
Now.. Can we have eq control too please ?
Or does Apple know better what i like ?
Dude! You’re so right. Super annoying to have such an expensive, and well engineered device, without EQ! Everyone’s ears are different, and it’s complete arrogance, and very annoying, to not account for people’s individual listening prefs. Really hope they fix this is iOS 12.

My wife and I watch TV before bed, but don't want the volume to be too loud or to disturb each other too much. Could I hook an Apple TV up to my TV, and have a HomePod on each of our nightstands and control the volume of each HomePod independently?
You should be able to. Just make sure you set them up as independent HomePod, I’m not as a stereo pair.
[doublepost=1527744754][/doublepost]
Not as convenient (and only works with the HomePod), but that’s what I have to do I guess.
[doublepost=1527622337][/doublepost]
If you don’t use stereo pairing, yes - you can independently connect to each one. But it would sound pretty awful with the sound coming from one side in mono.

I would recommend getting AirPods instead.
Wrong. It sounds fine. We have a mono HomePod attached to an Apple TV in one room and it sounds great.

AirPods aren’t a bad idea for one person, but I don’t know if you can have two separate pairs connected at the same time to an Apple TV like you can do with two HomePods via AirPlay 2.
[doublepost=1527745052][/doublepost]
...A bit like trying to describe snooker on the radio... but can someone try and articulate/describe the differences they hear between a single HP and paired HP's? Trying to determine if it's worth a 2nd i.e. is it "meh", "marginally better" or more "oh my God!".

Any observations on placement?
Uh, it’s f&%#ing great. I bought a second HomePod an hour after iso 11.4 was released and I love it.
[doublepost=1527745253][/doublepost]
They fixed another huge problem - before the HomePod would disconnect from Apple TV when you asked it to play music, now it stays connected and shows what’s playing via notification (and screensaver) on the Apple TV. There’s no command you can issue that will disconnect it from ATV so it will stay connected until you manually disconnect or reboot either one.

Lots of improvements with the Apple TV connection, guess I’m not selling mine after all (gonna get 2 more I think - I hope they will someday be good enough to replace the HT system in the living room).

The only downgrade is no volume control via iOS remote - I wonder if that was on purpose because I see no reason to remove that.

Bring Airplay 2 to the watch now! I want to be able to continue playing what I was listening to in the whole house when I walk in the door without missing a beat, that’s the future!
[doublepost=1527623988][/doublepost]
I don’t know about for music but for video via Apple TV it should sound completely different since one HomePod was mono and had no positional audio.
[doublepost=1527624067][/doublepost]Also music sounds more bassy than before, maybe they reverted the sound profile changes they made. Sounds as good as when it first came out to me.
Ugh. I hate the overemphasized bass. They need to add EQ functionality ASAP. This is really disrespecting customers to not allow them to tweak the sound to their prefs.
[doublepost=1527745958][/doublepost]
It doesn’t work with Apple TV for me. Even after creating a “stereo pair” in the home app I can only play Apple TV through one or the other. I can airplay and stream music to stereo but not movies.
Works fine for me. And the interface is super smooth. Have you updated the ATV, both HomePod and your iPhone?
[doublepost=1527746179][/doublepost]
That is a serious drawback. In fact, knowing this just stopped me from pulling the plug on a second one.
You’re taking one anecdotal story from someone on a forum as proof... of anything? I have two HomePod hooked up to my ATV and it works & sounds great. No reason to hesitate. The sound is a night & day improvement.

Alongside iOS 11.4, watchOS 4.3.1, and tvOS 11.4, Apple today released a new 11.4 software update designed for the HomePod, which introduces major new features for Apple's smart speaker.

This is the second update that's been released for the HomePod since it became available for purchase back in February.

homepoddesign-800x450.jpg

The new HomePod software will be installed automatically on the HomePod after you update to iOS 11.4, but you can also manually update and check your software version by following the instructions in our HomePod software how to.

As Apple announced this morning, the new HomePod software, paired with iOS 11.4, introduces support for AirPlay 2 and HomePod stereo pairing.

AirPlay 2 is an updated AirPlay protocol that's simpler, more advanced, and more robust, enabling multi-room audio capabilities. With AirPlay 2, you can play music in any room to any room, move music from one room to another room, or play the same song in multiple rooms using an iOS device through an app or Control Center, the Apple TV, the HomePod, or Siri voice commands on any of the aforementioned devices.

AirPlay 2 controls can be accessed within any app and in the Control Center on an iOS device running iOS 11.4. In the Control Center, you will see a list of all of the available AirPlay 2 devices in your home, and you can effortlessly send audio to a single device, to multiple devices, or switch audio between devices.

The HomePod is the first AirPlay 2 device and one of the only AirPlay 2 devices on the market right now, but Apple plans to allow third-party speakers from companies like Sonos, Bose, Libratone, and more to add support for AirPlay 2.

siriairplay2-1-800x598.jpg

Today's update also allows two HomePod speakers to be set up as a stereo pair, which is ideal for larger rooms as the arrangement offers up more room-filling sound. When paired, each HomePod is able to automatically adjust audio to take into account the other HomePod, for excellent sound from each device.

The HomePods are able to take advantage of the built-in A8 chip in each speaker to play a left or right audio channel while also separating out ambient and direct energy for what Apple says is an almost three dimensional soundstage.

Stereo pairing uses an Apple-designed wireless peer-to-peer direct link to allow the HomePods to communicate with one another and play music in sync. The two speakers will act as one when paired, and just one will respond to incoming Siri requests.

Setting up stereo sound is as simple as turning on a second HomePod. Whenever a second device is set up, you'll be prompted to form a stereo pair with a popup interface, with this information also available in the HomePod's settings in the Home app.

The new HomePod software also introduces one other small but important change -- it will allow users to check calendar appointments on the HomePod using Siri voice commands.

The HomePod is currently available only in the United States, the UK, and Australia, but Apple will expand availability to Canada, France, and Germany on Monday, June 18. While the HomePod is not launching in Canada, France, and Germany until mid-June, new languages, including Canadian English, French, and German are available on the HomePod starting today and are accessible through the HomePod settings in the Home app on an iOS device.

Well set up the stereo HomePods and if the sound for one HomePod is "good" then the stereo HomePod duo is "glorious." 1 to 4.

Some people have said it has something to do with audio options in Settings—apparently you need to set your audio output to Stereo and not Auto or Surround. Try fiddling with that (or calling Apple Care).

the only pain point is when you ask siri to play a song it also turns on the tv - apple needs to fix that. but, the sound from both speakers combined is excellent. i have my apple tv set to auto surround - i'll have to try stereo - but, for me the sound level is fine.
