Because I'm a student, I have a 23" full HD, amazingly good lcd screen and a laptop. Don't you think it would be kind of useful?

Also, there are many many many many students who buy macs. They don't have big plasma screens and blue ray players in their dorms...

I agree with you on the topic that some people use their computer/lcd as their main movie-watching-mechanism...and I mentioned YOUR SITUATION in my post.

Sheeeeeeeez. Please read the post before replying.

I bought my one direct from apple 30minutes after the keynote

This is it, the turning point for apple, OSX and the rest. Price wise, software wise, it does everything...

ships in 3 days (international keyboard) and cost 10174DKK + vat, now that is pushing the bargin bin.

I would not take 3 Acers for 4k each over 1 mac for 10k :)
Especially the MBP15" entry level. What a premo machine.

Worth the wait, I was worried they would wait until July :)

Its a shame they got rid of the express card, and replaced with with just a SD slot. As you said, when it comes to the Pro range of cameras they use CF. Not to mention sonys and Olympus etc that do not use SD. For some people this SD reader is going to be completely useless.

The Express Card slot is for expansion. What about a external USB mutliformat card reader. That would read CF / SD / and several other formats. It isn't like the speed is being lost here for most of these card transfer cards. If you are a "pro" wouldn't it be better to be prepared for whatever card you are handed? [ even pro can occasionally shoot with entry cameras which will have SD slots. So if need multiples get something that deals with it. ]

Yeah the folks who bought them are out, but how many more folks have bought USB multiformat readers ? With FW800 available on everything in the line maybe folks will do a FW800 multireader if speed is actually a problem.

What I'm waiting for is an example of what ExpressCard does for lots of users that the other slots/busses don't do. With zero firewire slots there was drop off in functionality that touched a large number of users.

I'm still waiting for the numpad on the 17'' macbook pro, How can you call pro a computer without number pad?? Real professionals use programs with lots of number entries!!
I'm still waiting for quad proccessor qx9300 17'' macbook pro All other brands already have it.
I'm still waiting for quadro fx graphic cards or gtx graphic cards buying a 2500€-3500€ notebook with a nvidia 9600 gpu IS A JOKE

CONCLUSIONS - I'm not going to wait anymore. I'm, going to buy a dell m6400 covet. THAT IS A REAL PRO NOTEBOOK, NOT THIS.

How can you call anything with integrated graphics pro? lmao at that one even though as a whole it's a good update for the Macbooks (minus pro).

It's amazing to me how many people will never be happy with anything that Apple puts out.

Now introducing the new MBP, now made of solid gold, only $1999...available today...

Forum poster 30 seconds later...

OMFG Apple this update sucks, its not made of platinum....god apple sucks.

Do you know what will be reeeeeaaaallyyyyy welcome?

A half price, double in quality Apple Cinema Display!!!!!!

Do you hear me Apple? Come on! Make my day in double! You just raise my value of my old macbook pro!!

No kidding, What they expect in Apple in order to offer in 15' Macbooks the matte display option?

Hey guys, check my sig...;)

First one to PM me (and send me $2,500) gets it!!! :D

Kidding.

*Pokes finger into ExpressCard slot* whew...still there...:D :D

Yes, truly a Porsche - with a Yugo graphics engine... :D

And yes.... I do heavily prefer MATTE finish displays. which is crazy Apple did away with

I don't understand this. I'm a die hard Apple fan but I will not buy a glossy screen. It is tolerable on the iPhone, but not on a desktop or laptop computer.

I'd like to see a nice chart, from Apple or otherwise, that compares the Mac laptops of 2 days ago to the "new line" that was announced today.

Right now (granted I haven't surfed all over the place yet for research) this seems like a bit of a shell game from Apple...rename ("rebrand") a product, remove some stuff here, add some stuff there, lower prices a bit and POOF!

Does anyone else feel this is confusing?

No Expresscard and no matte screen? Sounds like my next machine will be a Thinkpad. I'll hold on to my CD MBP as long as it's viable No cardbus and no matte screen==very lame "pro" machine. Heck, my old TiBook had specs closer to what I want than this thing does...

Completely agree, which is why I've always said that built-in memory-card readers are retarded. I have an external 1394 12-in-one that I like much better. I really can't believe Apple pulled an Acer/Dell/Toshiba on us like that.

Oh well. We have to trust Steve. :p

I'm Panasonics P2 cards (very big in the video field) can only be read by an ExpressCard reader, and most times on set you need to have two (even more) firewire devices on different busses going.

Got a new Mac Book Pro!!!! .... last week.... : (

I just bought a new 15' MBP last week, with a 2GB upgrade, along with an ipod touch and printer, using the rebates! I know, I know, I should have waited. Anyways, you can understand the situation that I'm in now. Is anyone else in the same boat? Should I just return it and take the 10% hit? What has your experience been?

Thanks for your advice!

Apple definitely seems to have forgotten their pro customers. They used to be targeted at WWDC. Now it seems they're more of a consumer electronics company who also makes computers. The loss of the Expresscard slot is a head scratcher for most pros. The loss of the matte screen last year is a travesty. Audio professionals, video professionals and designers seem to have been abandoned by the company. It's sad to see Apple treat some of its most loyal customer base in this manner. :(

I don't get it the HP Mini 2140 has both an express card slot and a SD card slot and that is a bloody nebook. Yet apples 13in heck even 15in pro models are not going to have it? I find this to be wrong.

It is Apple's minimalistic approach to design. Take away all the "unnecessary" stuff so left with the thinnest, lightest, design that covers the uses of most users. The desktop PCs with PCI slots and iMacs with none. So you were either going to get a SD card slot or a express card slot.

The other factor on the laptops is that can't poke too many larger holes in unibody frame or it will loose some rigidity. So the space on the side is more scarce on these than it is on those PC that have an amazing array of ports.

Uh-huh, sure is. Seems they added stuff people were focusing on but checking the specs you slowly starting to figure some important stuff have been taken away.

Not that I'm complaining though... I'll gladly take the increased resale value of the "last" gen! :D

17" macbook pro ordered! 5 day lead time quoted. About what I expected in waiting a week... more disk and CPU for the less money. I almost ordered a matte screen based on what many people said here, but after seeing both the matte and the gloss in the apple store.... I much preferred glossy display... crisper text/images (of course, but more so than expected).

hehe... sorry... I've read the top, read the bottom, skipped the middle. And I wouldn't call college kids a 'certain population'. They're probably buying macbooks by the dozen compared to other demographics.

And that's what apple is aimed for, really (don't know if I approve). They put SD card because the target demographic uses point and shoot cameras with SD cards. I like express card -> you could get semi-decent ssd, stuck it in and have 32gb of extra storage that would just sit there forever (well, you can get 16GB SDs I think...)

Sorry, but epic fail on this.

No quad cores yet
Still glossy only on the 15"
No express card on the 15" (WTF)
Integrated graphics on a "Pro" machine
Still no Blu-Ray option (for those who keep complaining)

The "Pro" moniker has now just become a marketing sham, they're nice machines, but should be a lot better.

Still the 13" one looks pretty nifty, and it's nice to see that maybe all the FW ranting paid off.

Need to rant more about the express card and matte

Waiting to hear if the HD is easily replaceable, and if the 13" has a better display (i.e. a "Pro" display)

ExpressCard gone...???

I can live with glossy displays (although I don't like 'em).
I can live with the 9400M on the baseline 15".
I can live with a non-replaceable battery.

I can NOT live without an ExpressCard slot, least of all when it's being replaced with... an SD slot???

As has been stated before, as someone who works with audio, I can't understand why Apple just removed the ONLY slot that allows for true upgradeability. It allowed me to have the FireWire buses I need on my original baseline UMBP.

Please people, don't go telling me to daisy-chain all my devices together, it causes problems, and can't be used practically in professional situations.

I don't know what has happened to Apple... ever since ditching matte screens (and FW400) they've been heading downhill for professionals.

I'd love today's announcements if I was a consumer though :)

please, you can get a bluray drive for around 150.00 now, do you know what the markup will be on the macbook pro line if they included these players in the laptop..more than that.. why would mac put a blu ray player in a system when they offer hd movies for sale through the itunes store and apple tv, its simply a business strategy, you will prob see a super blu drive offered as an acessory in the future or an apple tv/blu ray/time mach type all integrated device as well prob in the future but no time soon as its directly competing with hd content on the store

Eric, you're very clearly illustrating the problem. This is a MacBook "Pro". What you are talking about over and over is "consumer" usage. I'm a motion graphics professional and I author BluRay disks and need as many portable ways as possible to exchange gigantic amounts of footage in a mobile setting and need to be able to preview and display my work.

Between this issue and the new inability to use my eSATA RAID through my Sonnet Express Card 34 adapter, I'm SOL or have to move to a 17" (lame) and an external BR burner.

So bummed. Sticking with my current setup for a long time apparently.

Why is BR needed on any laptop these days? Yes, seriously...why? I have had a home BR player for 1.5 years and own, for numerous reasons, about 10 titles...and yes I have a killer tv and a/v setup. None of my PC and Apple laptops/desktops have BR nor do I care. What's the big advantage of watching a BR on a 15" laptop? Or on a 19" monitor?

You can list all the tech specs you want, and I'll agree that technically BR is a great product...but it hasn't been selling well (again, for numerous reasons) since it won "the war" in Jan 2008...1.5 years ago.

My bet tells me that BR will never make it mainstream into laptops. Not even as data devices. BR has started to appear in pricey desktops, but again, I don't see any value unless you really want to sit in front of your 19" or 20" monitor (which most people have today...I have a 24") for 2+ hours watching a movie when you can easily watch it on a very affordable 40-50" tv with a true sound system. Sure, a certain population are college kids or people who live in extremely small apartments might want BR on their laptop or turn their computer into a media hub...but that's not the general population. :)

The main problem is that very few consumers see the value of BR over DVD...and currently have the means/wishes to spend quite a bit of money to upgrade to BR (players, movies, a/v equipment). There are hundreds of articles that will go into great detail about why BR is not selling well...not to mention that a lot of BR movie titles are pretty much the same quality of DVD. Yes, you heard that right. The movie studios need to make better "transfers" to BR to truly notice all the wonders of BR.

I'm praying that BR will soon take off...but if not by Jan 2010 I fear it will go the way of Minidisc(people just didn't want it) and/or Betamax (something cheaper beat it/came out).
