Apple Releases New '3E756' AirPods Max Firmware

Firmware fixed the crackling sound I had every time I picked up another Apple device while listening. Otherwise can’t hear anything different.

Do you guys see spatial audio animation while playing Dolby Atmos track ? I can see only while playing videos.

I have the same issue. Here’s the interesting part;

- Spatial works fine in the TV app
- Spatial does not work for *music* in the Music app
- However spatial does work in the Music app, but only when there are *videos* being played

In Control Centre i can see the spatial audio button, it’s enabled, but it’s not animated / moving.

Seems like some bug in the Music app to me…

I have the exact same issue on my iPhone 12 Pro and iPad 12.9 Pro.

PS. In settings i have enabled all the right toggles
- Dolby Atmos = Always On
- Audio Quality = Lossless Audio
- Audio Quality > Wifi > Lossless
- Download in Dolby Atmos

I woke up this morning with the new firmware and, while i can't categorically conclude that the update completely fixed the cackling issue ive had with the aipods max, i can say that so far they've helped a lot. Normally i'd experience the cackling when putting them on and pressing play almost every time. But so far haven't experienced that. Time will tell how far the update goes in fixing this issue for me, but i'm pretty sure it's helped a lot.
Not sure how much of an issue the cackling has been for everyone else, but it's definitely been an issue for me.
I’ve had this quite a bit. Especially each time I re-connect to the iPhone 12 Pro or change audio sources on the iPhone (YouTube to Music for instance). It often is so bad it will completely lose the connection and I have to restart the iPhone to get them connected again. It starts almost like static, and the music drops in and out and then the audio stops completely. My AirPods Pro never do this.

As an update to my previous comment, this new firmware seems to have completely fixed the cackling for me. Using the airpods max connected to my devices on the same apple id and my work computer (with a different apple id but paired to the same pair of airpods max), the experience of using the headphones has been completely different. Everything works as expected.

2 days later, I still can't get my APMs to pull down the new firmware. Could really use that fix for the slight disruption when using other devices.

(They finally updated on day 3)

You'll love them! I've had mine for two months now and can not stop using them!
I agree. Despite some software problems (which are very irritating, especially when not being able to connect to a Mac or iPad/iPhone), the sound quality is amazing. Since I got them last January I haven‘t stopped using them every single day. They sound absolutely fantastic and they are totally worth their money. The latest firmware has also improved the connectivity issues.

The positive feedback has convinced me - just ordered a pair of black AirPods Max …
seems they have the edge over the Sonys in all the areas where those annoyed me 😀
I sold my Sonys for the AirPods Max. I never looked back, the confort is top notch and I don’t have sweaty pad anymore after long sessions. The sound, for me, is really better, meaning natural, clean, deep and precise, than the Sonys and I really loved my Sonys.

I am experiencing the exact same issue. Note I'm on the latest AirPods Max firmware and using the beta OS across all devices (iPad Pro 2018, iPhone 12 Pro Max, M1 MacBook Air)

Interestingly, if I have my AirPods Max connected to my iPhone, the Dolby Atmos icon disappears on the track I'm listening to. When I pair it to my laptop, the icon reappears on the iPhone. Meanwhile, the laptop only displays the lossless icon.

Something somewhere is not detecting the AirPods Max as being a "spatial audio compatible" device or something along those lines.

Hopefully this will fix the 8-10 percent battery drop over a 20-24 hour period, despite been in the case.

Well, this firmware has made no difference to this issue. Just checked now, and mine have dropped 10 percent while been in the case for 24 hours

The Airpods arrived yesterday and I am quite impressed - the ANC is much more natural than with the Sony’s where
you have the feeling of being in some kind of echo chamber. Also the quality and design are impressive as is the device switch - which was horror with the SONY.
Quire happy with my purchase

Glad you are enjoying them! They are honestly one of my favorite Apple devices I have ever bought, and I have had nearly every device they have made. My favorite use is using them while watching things on my Apple TV, but obviously they are fantastic for music. I've enjoyed listening to some albums on Apple Music that have been released in Dolby Atmos. For example, Norah Jones album "Come Away With Me" sounds so awesome in Atmos. This isn't true for all tracks that have been remixed with Atmos, but there are some other stellar pieces to listen to.

Hope you continue to enjoy them! They are master-class!

thank you very much for the friendly advice - unfortunately I am still stuck with Spotify (due to my HEOS Drive, Amp and Speakers). But the minute they fully support Airplay2 or Apple Music or whenever Airplay2 comes to shairport I'll move to Apple Music.

I've got to say that they are one of my most favourite Apple purchases over the last few years. I love the comfort and fit of them, and like how with all of my other Apple devices which uses the same Apple ID, they are ready to connect.

I love watching some You Tube through my Apple TV before drifting off to sleep, and I love the AirPods Pro for that purpose, as they are better to wear as I can lay back in bed with them on, which I would not be able to do with the AirPods Max.

Enjoy your purchase :)

Reading this thread I'm surprised that people compare the WMX Sonys to the APM as there's no comparison whatsoever

I bought the WH-1000MX4s as I kept reading rave reviews and I think they're horrible. Cheaply made, creak, don't connect well, nasty woofy bass, half touch-controls. I kept them, because they were so cheap, and use them for video-conferences on my nasty work W10 craptop

The APM's are in a different league in every respect, build, usability, sound, comfort, etc. only thing they need is a little bit of EQ tuning as the general sound is a bit tight over AAC, which for some reason sounds worse on iP12 than it does for MBP16 - it was a bit the same with the APP's when they first came out, they sounded flat, but after a few months Apple tweaked the EQ and they became much more engaging

And don't get me started on Sony WF-1000XM3 vs APP's, the Sonys are absolute garbage

So what is the latest firmware upgrade number? Is there link at Apple.com that shows what the latest firmware update number is? I couldn’t find any information about the most up-to-date firmware number on Apple’s site.

Agree. "Love" my APM.
