Adaptive audio definitely lowers noise of things like construction/leaf blowrs/traffic, but it doesn't block it out, just knocks it down a notch, not sure if it just all out does a half ANC of it its more nuanced than that, but it definitely makes walking around outside 'better'.
This is my experience as well. When going from Adaptive to Transparency the difference is pretty stark.

Hope they fix the high battery drain I experience since the update to 6B32

Still no update to 6B34
Update: 6B34 arrived…
now testing the battery drain
Update: better than before but still one hour less than with the 6B32!
btw it's an brand new pair of AirPods Pro being 6 months old!

BTW, the sound is horrible, by far too bass heavy which causes worse speech intelligibility

LOL. My AirPod Pros haven’t updated since 6A301
I wish there was a way to brute force the update

YMMV, but for me, plugging my airpods in or sticking them on my Watch charger, and then connecting the airpods to my phone, playing media for about a minute, then putting them back in the case, that forces the update for me.

Two massive issues that I have had are improved. These don't amplify obnoxious higher frequency sounds as much as before. Think crinkling mylar potato chip bag. Before, I would have to end a call on my end because the other person could not stand how much louder little sounds in the background were over my voice.

The other big issue was device switching. Even though I did not have these selected as connected to my MacBook Pro, they would automatically switch to it when I put them in to answer a call on my iPhone. Frequently I would go to answer (the icon showing they were connected to the phone would appear in Dynamic Island) and they would start playing Spotify on the laptop instead. They seem to actually respect the device I want them to function with.

Adaptive audio has done pretty much nothing in my usage. It acts exactly the same as transparency mode on mine (I have the USB-C model as well). I even tried it in the exact usage apple showed in their demo - running next to leaf blowers. It did not block any sound.
Same for me. ANC works fantastic but Adaptive Audio may as well just be Transparency enabled.

try it on an airplane - huge help without going full ANC

Huzzah. I did a reinstall of the AiPods (Forget this device. Repaired, pushing the button on the case etc) and it’s up to the current firmware. Finally.

Plug the AirPods into your Mac if you have one. Update happens fast.

And I for one have actually noticed improvements to the various audio modes with each firmware update. Hope it stays that way.

Weird. They may be slowly rolling it out. When I’ve tried it, plugging them in then opening and closing the lid seems to do the trick pretty fast.

“Apple does not provide details on what features might be included in the refreshed firmware beyond "bug fixes and other improvements”

“Apple does not give customers instructions on how to upgrade AirPods software”

Why are you the way that you are, Apple?

Usually there are complaints about the update process of the AirPods. Just be happy with the way, Apple does it.

I also own the Sony WF-2000XM5 buds. The update process is a pain in the - you know where.
The app always loses connection, the update process gets interrupted all the time, the app does not know my buds anymore and annoying things like that.

With the AirPods, it just happens. Maybe not right now, but it is done. Every time. Without any interaction.

I don't like the way Apple does airpod updates. I think Airpods should be added to the home app and there should be a button you click to initiate the update. I just checked my airpods and they are still on the older version. I don't know how to force the update and to be told just accept it this way seems kind of silly. Everything else is updated with a click or something. Why should the Airpods be any different.

I was able to update mine within 15 minutes. I just put my phone close to my router, open up the case and put it right next to my iPhone. Haven’t had a chance to test, but flying to NY on Friday.

yup, my gf recently bought me the MX5 headphones. the management software is overly complex, the update process is problematic and even things like battery status is obscure. My previous Sennheiser had a far superior UX, although the battery life and noise cancelling were not as good.

This is probably the only Apple product I've ever bought that I really haven't liked and wished I had bought a non-Apple product. The ANC has just got progressively worse since I bought them, and now after about 16 months I find that they hardly block any street noise.

I must either have awful hearing, or just a lucky pair. The ANC on my set is fantastic - just as good as when I bought it. I use my pair every day for the almost exact same walk/run/fitness in my city so its a pretty consistent experience. That and it updated quickly to the new firmware. Will check it tomorrow on my usual usage.
