Read about the update. Opened the case. Checked 10 minutes later. It was updated. Don't know to make it more basic than that. OTOH, I did expend about 0.001 calories opening the case.

I don't know. I guess I just want to click on something and start the update myself. Like I said, all the other updates can be started. Airpods just...happens.

For those who have a Mac, he fastest and surest way to update is to connect your AirPods to the Mac using a cable.

well my app2's updated...

...the case did not.

usb-c --> lightning via my M2 Mini about 15 minutes ago PST

This should NOT be this random to update Apple hardware ever

Finally it does update the frigging firmware... after disconnecting the bluetooth from the iPhone, and connect again.

for those who can't update try this, it works every time

  1. If your Airpods are not in the case, put them inside and close the lid.
  2. Keep the lid closed for about 30 seconds and then take out the Airpods and insert them into your ears.
Keep them in your ears for about 10 seconds.
  3. Remove the Airpods and put them back in the case and close the lid.
  4. Charge the case via cable or any wireless pad/MagSafe charger.
  5. Keep your iPhone near the case for about 10 minutes.
  6. After 10 minutes, open the Airpods case lid and on your iPhone, go to Settings > Bluetooth and tap the "¡" to the right of your Airpods name. The Airpods should have been updated to the most recent version.
If the Airpods still haven't updated, repeat the steps above, but this time wait more than 10 minutes when you get to step 5.

Yup. Had them next to my iPhone all night charging and zilch. Then I plugged the case into my Mac and bam! The update went through within minutes.

IT'S NEW AIRPODS FIRMWARE DAY!! OH BOY OH BOY OH BOY OH BOY

(stripping off clothes, running around in a loin cloth holding basket full of Apple stickers, throwing them into the air in great handfuls and singing the New Firmware song)
Loin cloth? What a prude.

It is about "not caring about it". There are situations, where I want an update NOW, because it eliminates important errors. In the case of the AirPods, I do not even think about it. They do their job and maybe tomorrow with the new firmware, they do it better.

They will update. Today I just placed them close to my iPhone - out of curiosity - while writing that message. I controlled it - it is 6B34. Just without doing anything from my side.
Or maybe they do it worse after update? You want the same UX and update process for every Apple device no?

NC is the same: 24db max of noise cutted. After each update I test NC via Apple Watch (not a scientific proof I know).

I wonder which forced update will deliberately chuff-up the NC so that Apple can say the Pro 3 (whenever it comes) is x% better. I am witness to the fact they literally did that with the first gen.

Usually there are complaints about the update process of the AirPods. Just be happy with the way, Apple does it.

I also own the Sony WF-2000XM5 buds. The update process is a pain in the - you know where.
The app always loses connection, the update process gets interrupted all the time, the app does not know my buds anymore and annoying things like that.

With the AirPods, it just happens. Maybe not right now, but it is done. Every time. Without any interaction.
How is the noise cancellation and sound versus the air pod pros. Thanks

A simpler alternative for checking the firmware:
While wearing your AirPods, open Settings
• Tap AirPods icon (just below your AppleID)
• Scroll to 'About' section at page bottom

Tap Version to show the current firmware of both AirPods and the case.

Interestingly enough, my APP2 have been updating by themselves without first connecting to my phone or Mac mini. It has been resting on my desk for the past few weeks, save for a few charges via MagSafe just to keep it topped up to around 80%. Have not connected them to my phone and the past 2 or 3 updates have happened in the background automatically.

MacRumors: Suggestion to put the new build # in these headlines, since there are so many saying
Apple Releases New AirPods Pro 2 Firmware

you would think Apple could come up with a way to install the firmware manually or via an app/mac app vs the mystery that it is.
There is. Just plug the case into a device that is connected to the internet (Mac or iPad), connect the AirPods to your phone via Bluetooth and wait about 20 minutes. The Firmware should update. That's how I just did this update.

The Adaptive noise canceling has not been all that great.
hopefully this addresses that.

I used it them at the gym, with previous firmware updates, it would block much more noise then it does with the most recent firmware.

the full on noise canceling was and has been fine though..
No?
It is working very well for me
but random music pause is more annoying

That would be nice. They could make an AirPods app for people like us who care about that stuff. People on forums like this would do it instantly and provide lots of feedback for them.
