I hope apple sends you a check for how much you defend them. I have cleaned them (do regularly) and also changed the tips. Again, this isn't my first rodeo, but to say they haven't gotten worse over time with firmware updates is laughable, even for an apple die-hard...

Conspiracy theories are also laughable.

We don’t really know what is really happening based on subjective opinions. We would need to have exact measurements under controlled conditions, and even then - we still wouldn’t know the actual reason for the change. Why would Apple make their brand new product worse? (And no, it’s not because of some patents, that has been debunked).

It’s not defending Apple, it’s just common sense.

It is anecdotal - because ambient noise is not constant. Unless you measure under exactly the same conditions with both firmwares, any data measured will be unreliable.
True. And even then it would have to be double checked or verified by another measurement method than „just“ the iOS 16/ Apple Watch feature. Just to rule out any errors or anything like that in that feature or method.

The case drain battery. Drop from 100 to 40 in a couple of days. Barely used the Airpods (APP1).

My AirPods 3 got it almost instantly when I connected it to my phone, maybe 2-3 mins later. My AirPods 2 is taking forever.

I wish they'd make this upgrade process more intuitive.

What case version is it?
You can see in APP settings > version (tap on 5B58)

Mine updated from 3.62.1 (original) to 51.11.1.

Dude. Here’s two reasons why - lawsuits over patents. The third is revenue - Apple does $1.4bn a year in a $16bn market.

The patents are not related to ANC in AirPods.

Firmware 5B58 made my AirPods Max’s head detection thing ultra sensitive again. The previous firmware fixed it, and now it’s back again. :/

Sometimes just adjusting the APM cuts the sound and connection (the APM thinks I’ve taken it off my head), and sometimes when I do take it off and put it back, sound is only playing from one side.

Try resetting them. It normally helps with issues like this. Shouldn’t be firmware related as mine don’t have this issue seemingly.

Don’t know if anyone posted this, but seems pretty convincing.

TLDR: it’s not the patents, it’s not planned obsolescence, Rtings didn’t really prove anything and if there is any change, you probably wouldn’t hear it (which Rtings also claims btw).

It hasn't had any effect with regard to max volume on the 3rd Gen Airpods we have here. They are still way too loud for me to even touch anywhere close to max volume. Same applies to bass levels.

It's really baffling to read stuff like that on here, really. As if Apple were to reduce the max volume on these by 20% with the latest firmware update...cmon people, seriously. Make sure that Spatial audio hasn't been enabled by accident or the auto adjust volume setting or anything like that. Make sure that they're clean and not clogged with dirt, dust, ear wax or anything like that.

The update has nothing to do with your individual problem here.
Apple, in particular, attract petulant people. I just hope they're actually children, and not adults.

Just stumbled on a nice little tweak in this firmware update for AirPods Max under Accessibility: you can now adjust the volume of indicator tones for noise cancellation mode and Siri. (Maybe this also applies to AirPods Pro? Not sure, don’t have a pair)

Look way down at the bottom of the headphone settings and go into Accessibility.

Yeah this is also APP2… I played with it but ultimately moved it back to 100%.

Excellent spot. I've been leaving feedback for this feature since last year when I bought the APM. Thanks for posting this, or else I wouldn't have found it.

Has anyone actually shown data that there was any degradation on this? I keep asking for that about the claims of APP2 reduction and no one responds.
Hello - excellent you should ask. RTINGS (dot com) will be releasing their full review - with 5B58 as the "official" evaluated version - in the next day or two. They were able to test on both 5B58 and the older 5A374/377 (devices had different firmware depending on manufacturing/shipping).

Still on my APP1 and after a full week of listening I see no difference in ANC. For me this update produced a better sound stage and more robust mids. So far pleased with it.

Try using the AirPods for 10-15 mins and then put them back in the case. That almost always triggered the update within the half hour. No need for the lid to be open.

Yes, I get that.

But I was specifically asking about how to do this...
Connect your airpods to your mac, open console and start logging. Search "UARPUpdater" and you'll be able to see the progress or errors etc.
