I have the gen 1 and just ordered gen 2 for a 9/26 - 27 delivery. I hope the fit is better. I have one ear that is a different size than the other.

They're EXACTLY the same size and shape - may I recommend comply foam ear buds though, improves the sound and they mould to yours ear - I never use silcone tips on IEMs.

I had no idea about this APP1 firmware that dampened the ANC. 😮 Got my APP2 this morning and I was seriously impressed by the ANC so I am a bit cautious about this firmware update now but I guess we all have no choice.

After over a year with the pro 1 the active noise cancelling has been pretty frustrating. It has moments, especially after turning it on, that it is quite good and then there is a noticeable step down and background noise goes up. It's better than nothing but it really feels like it could be a LOT better if they kept working on it.

Trying the pro 2 and honestly if they pull this nonsense again with firmware bait and switch I'll just return them.

Version 5A374 release notes

  • Added features and capabilities to support the new AirPods Pro (2nd generation)
Apples site still says this is the latest version

Not entirely correct, black tip is first version (APP1). Not only are there multiple visual differences the size is different in the middle where the stem meets the earpiece.

The tip connecting is the same size but you can’t charge them in either - you get an error.

Well OBVIOUSLY there's visual differences and the stem now has the slider on it - but for all intents and purposes the ear fit is identical

It’s not - look at my picture - I have both right here in front of me and they are not identical.

Additionally the slider is present on both (moved towards the front on AAP 2- just not used on the first gen as a slider (you can see the slider cutout on both in my second picture).

AirPod Pros are great for voice, calls, podcasts etc. but NOT music. There are so many great true wireless earbuds out there better for music. The Sennheiser Momentum 3 True Wireless being one of them
Nobody truly serious about music uses anything but wired headphones and an external DAC/Amp. Say what you want about the Sennheisers or LDAC, we’re not at the point technologically where wireless headphones or IEMs with noise-cancelling abilities can handle the bandwidth or the drivers required to achieve audiophile-grade music reproduction.

I have these AirPod Pro 2s (or my AirPod Max’s) for watching TV or movies, traveling or exercise. When I want to listen to music, I have Focal wired cans and a desktop DAC and amplifier. I’ve auditioned every imaginable wireless option and there’s simply no comparison between the two.

For the price of these Pro 2s, the audio quality is perfectly pleasing and acceptable to me. There’s no way I’m going to spend more on a similar product if my goals are to get serious about listening to music. That’s just me, sorry!

I don't get why they continue to do this when I can connect the MagSafe Battery Pack to an iPad or Mac for five minutes and it'll force the update.
Ordinarily I would have agreed with you on this, but for some reason it’s not working for me with these new AirPod Pros. I plugged the MagSafe case with the headphones inside into my MacBook Pro, and unlike all the other accessories I’ve updated this way, nothing happened. I’m having a hard time getting these to update period actually!

No, the point of my post is that the AirPods *don't* update this way, and it’s annoying. Sorry for the confusion.

Well, if I’ve learned anything from visiting MacRumors…
“It’s a Money Grab”
or
“They’re forcing you to upgrade”
or
“They’re destroying the environment”
or
“It’s time for Timmy to go”
Sometimes it reminds me of the talking Barbies and talking GI Joes, where you could pull a string on their back and they'd say one of, like, seven standard phrases at random.

Seems like, every September, if the iPhones are abundant, it's, "see, they're not selling well because they're horrible", and if the iPhones are scarce, it's, "Apple is purposely holding back stock to make it seem like they're selling well". Armed with just those two canned responses, every new iPhone lineup is abysmal.

(BTW, years ago there was a group called the Barbie Liberation Front, that was sneaking replacement dolls into the boxes in stores, where they had swapped the voice mechanism between the Barbies and GI Joes, so GI Joe could say, "math is hard!" and such, and vice versa. Way more entertaining than the canned-response crowd on MacRumors.)

I don’t disagree, but that’s like saying that anyone that is serious about photos will take their DSLR with them and a bag with 3 lenses.
I don’t think that’s possible for an everyday scenario, and the same goes for music.

Damn. I cannot for the life of me get these things to update. It’s like Apple took the first gen’s weakest point and somehow made it worse. Anyone got any tips/success stories?

I had mine plugged into MacBook Air and connected to phone via Bluetooth. Still wanted almost an hour before it updated. 🤷‍♂️

I'm assuming you have to use the latest iOS to pair these? (Which I don't want to do on my older iphone).

They'll pair fine with iOS 14 or 15, but you won't get the newer features in Settings (Personalized Spatial Audio, Adaptive Transparency, etc.) and might not get the new Find My features. You'll still get the better ANC and sound quality, though.

Adaptive transparency and spatial audio did work on iOS 14.7, the volume slider on the stem didn't and I also didn't get the paring graphic and had to do it manually.
