Apple today introduced a new firmware update for the AirPods Pro, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods 2, AirPods 3, and AirPods Max. The new firmware is 6A301 for the AirPods Pro 2 and 6A300 for the first-generation AirPods Pro, the standard AirPods, and the AirPods Max.

Apple does not provide details on what features might be included in the refreshed firmware, so it is unclear what's new. There are multiple new AirPods Pro 2 features coming in iOS 17, so the AirPods Pro 2 update likely brings that functionality.

Apple has been testing an AirPods Pro 2 firmware beta for the last few months, and it has been available to developers. iOS 17 brings Adaptive Audio, which combines ANC and Transparency to deliver an ideal audio experience that blocks out loud or distracting noises.

Adaptive Audio includes Conversation Awareness and Personalized Volume. Conversation Awareness detects when someone speaks to you, lowering the volume of what's playing and cutting down on background noise so you can hear. Personalized Volume takes into account your listening preferences and the noise in the environment to adjust sound levels.

Other new features include an option to mute and unmute the microphone by pressing on the AirPods Pro stem, faster automatic switching between devices, and support for activating Siri without including the "Hey" wake word.

Apple does not offer instructions on how to upgrade AirPods software, but firmware is generally installed over-the-air while the ‌‌AirPods‌‌ are connected to an iOS device. Putting the ‌‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌‌ in the case, connecting the ‌‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌‌ to a power source, and then pairing the ‌‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌‌ to an iOS device or Mac should force the update.

You can check your ‌‌‌AirPods‌‌ or ‌‌‌‌‌‌AirPods Pro‌‌‌‌‌‌‌ firmware by following these steps:
  • Connect your ‌‌‌‌‌‌AirPods Pro‌‌‌‌‌‌ to your iOS device.
  • Open the Settings app.
  • Tap General.
  • Tap About.
  • Tap ‌‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌‌.
  • Look at the number next to "Firmware Version."
If we learn more about what's new in these firmware releases, we'll update this article.

in the apple news room. apple announced that you can do lossless audio using apple vision pro with 2nd gen airpods pros
Yeah - why just with the Vision Pro?

Introducing Lossless Audio with Apple Vision Pro

AirPods Pro (2nd generation) with MagSafe Charging Case (USB‑C) will enable Lossless Audio with ultra-low latency to deliver the perfect true wireless solution with Apple Vision Pro.2 The H2 chip in the latest AirPods Pro and Apple Vision Pro, combined with a groundbreaking wireless audio protocol, unlocks powerful 20-bit, 48 kHz Lossless Audio with a massive reduction in audio latency.
When Apple Vision Pro is available early next year in the U.S., customers will be able to enjoy the most advanced wireless audio experience in the industry with the new AirPods Pro for exceptional entertainment, gaming, FaceTime calls, and so much more

Why? Because enabling it with existing Apple gear wouldn't make you spend an absurd amount of money on something you don't need.
Yeah - I get the money side of things but clearly shows (I think) that the current AirPods hardware can deliver lossless audio. I suspect they will release this wider given how most of the AM library is lossless.

Mine updated straight away, nice! Only problem is that I was playing with them and the pop-up came up telling me about the new features and then my colleague came over and needed help with a client so I went to help and when I got back the pop-up was gone. Can someone give me screenshots so I can see what it said?

I mean, that's sad if true. The Vision Pro is already a solution in search of a problem. If artificially confining a niche feature like lossless audio to it is the only way they can cajole people into spending several grand on a product nobody asked for nor needs, then it just goes to show how much of a boondoggle waste of resources and money this Vision Pro really is.

It's not true. Taking potshots at Apple is easy and something all of us tend to do on occasion. I believe with respect to this it is unwarranted.

Also, Vision Pro is a development product. Apple never expected to sell too many of them at this stage of development and I doubt they expected their average customer would even entertain a purchase at these levels of cost and evolution. I really think people ought to relax. Vision Pro is a multi-year project until it is even close to being a consumer product. I have not seen anything that leads me to believe they are "trying to cajole people into spending several grand." Beyond the debut on their slick video, they haven't done a thing to push them on people and they have fully admitted by their actions and developer outreach that they aren't ready and if you are an early adopter go ahead and take a chance.

I am not buying them in foreseeable future, but I am excited to see what they become and if the can deliver on their potential I will.

Don't forget it was a couple of years until the watch took off. It will be at least that long. Patience is a virtue that seems to be correlated with age.
