My understanding is this product sucks. I hope this firmware update makes it suck a little less for the people who spent a good chunk of change on it.

The other day, I fell asleep with my phone in my bed with the battery pack charging it and it actually got so hot that it burned me and woke me up! I've also noticed a slight delay in the "ping" when I attach the battery pack to my 13 Pro. It used to be immediate.

Next to the polishing cloth, the MagSafe battery may be the most useless item in Apple’s inventory?‍♂️?
I own the battery, I wish I didnt. It is truly terrible. At least the polishing cloth has a use.

Cloth > Battery any day.

Sucks? How so? There’s a bug I mentioned earlier which seems to effect a small number of people, what’s wrong with it apart from that?

I would also like to know why some people dislike the magsafe external battery so much. I just bought one because my iPhone 12 Pro Max with 92% battery health simply does not suffice me anymore. Especially when I am on vacation and I am actively taking pictures and shooting videos.

FYI: I had it connected to my phone and the lightning plugged in to my macbook and it updated.

With the problems I’m having updating from the original firmware version 2.0.2c.0 to either of the updates that have now been released I’m beginning to think like that myself! ???
Plug the lightning into your macbook and it will update.

Just checked and my launch day battery pack seems to be running the original firmware still. 2.0.2c.0

Sometimes it shows Hardware Version EVT2
Sometimes it shows the firmware as 0.0.0.0

Seems to be working fine so who knows...

For those that have had success updating while plugged into a MacBook, do you plug directly into the battery pack or into the phone?

One of the worst Apple products ever released, UGLY, does not go with the clean aesthetics of the iPhone, and only comes in white? I miss the battery case, that was the best iPhone accessory ever released.

EDIT: Just as everyone else said, mine updated moments after being plugged into my MacBook. Plugged directly into the battery pack with phone magnetically attached.

The capacity is too low. It’s slow to charge the phone. It gets pretty warm while attached. You can’t charge it wirelessly. It’s expensive for what it does (and doesn’t do).

Thank you! After waiting for an hour for the update with the battery attached to my phone, this worked instantly for me. Article should be updated to reflect this advice.
It worked for me too! I wonder if this also works for the AirPod Pro or Max? Mine are already updated so I’ll have to wait for the next release to check. But what a great tip—I’m hoping this resolves some connection problems I’ve been having…

Thanks for the plug into a Mac to update tip. Bought two of these for me (iPhone 13 Pro) & my son's (iPhone 12) phones for a forthcoming trip to Disney World. We did look at other MagSafe battery packs, but every last one we considered had a number of bad reviews. Yes, Apple's version is 'under capacity' for all but the 12 & 13 minis and is horribly overpriced. On the other hand, the iOS integration & intelligent charging sold us along with a lack of outright failures in even the worst reviews.

Updated the firmware on both batteries in under a min plugging them into my MacBook. All set to go with 7.5w charging on the go as and when we need it. Beyond the initial sticker shock, I've never been disappointed in Apple's first party accessories (chargers, cables, MagSafe charger and the always excellent leather cases).

it's not there to be pretty though. it's there to do a job and help you with your phone's battery.

and last time I checked, damn near every iPhone in the wild is wrapped in some sort of case. All that beautifully designed aluminum and glass wrapped in a soulless phone condom.

Is the phone attached to the battery pack when you plug it in to the Mac. I’m doing this and it’s not working.

Phone on. Phone off. Really a POS process. Much like apple lately.
