The SSD + hard drive option is tempting, but I’d only want an Intel X-25 80GB in there for OS and apps, and keep my home folder on the HDD. Too bad Apple’s only option is a $600 256GB SSD. I wonder if the 2.5” bay will be user-accessible after the fact. I don’t like the idea of opening up and operating on an iMac (dust, screen, etc.), but to save $600? I might be convinced.

Your the second person to mention this price but it shows $750 for me...

Okay, here's what I don't get... doing a quick price check between US and UK prices on the top end iMac we're back to the usual 8 - 10% increase which is more or less what you expect as we're a more expensive country to trade in. No problem there and no complaints. So how come the Mac Mini still has that 20%+ markup? It just doesn't make sense and considering that the base iMac is only £350 more for a better processor, double the RAM, 1/3rd more Hard Disk space, better graphics card, wireless keyboard and mouse AND a 21.5" monitor it's very hard to recommend one. Really wish Apple would sort that out.

Other than that, nice update all ways round, especialy as the lack of shiny new cases for the Mac Pro might stop some of my users from breaking down the door demanding updates they have no use for. :D

Apple needs to get it's act together with the iMac GPUs. It pisses me off I have to get a bohemeth 27 inch monster just to get the ATI 5750, which is still a mediocre card. If I want a 21.5' I'm stuck with a 5670 at best.

Really wanted to drop the cash on a 21.5" to play SC 2, but the 5670 just won't run that game at 1080P with Ultra settings.
Maybe you need to realize that you don't need to run your games at the top settings.

The 5670 is ATI's midrange offering. It will play anything you throw at it, just not on the highest settings.

Actually no. ATI midrange offering is 57xx series.

You can't play many modern games on high resolutions (1920x1080 or bigger) with an Radeon 5670 and the most effects (AA etc.) turned on.

However, an 5670 will run (almost) all games will all effects turned on 1280x1024 or even bigger resolutions.

Older games will work great.

Yes...

What kind of daily work are you doing with that iMac? Just wondering, that's a lot of RAM.

I'm doing some video editing but mainly music. Some of my sessions are running with multiple instances of virtual synths like Omnisphere, Korg Legacycell and other ram hungry apps.

See:
http://www.reverbnation.com/aliensporebomb for a listen.

It's not unusual to have a session with 80-120 tracks at a single go.

I also run a small recording studio where people can do demos or record projects and this is a pretty capable system. My old G5 2.5 functions as backup machine.

1. Yes new MacPro. Try reading.
2. It's an iMac. Who cares.
3. No idea what you're talking about. It's speculated to be released Aug. 7th. is that today?
4. Never any indication otherwise.
5. Get it from crucial like the rest of world.

nevermind. that info wasn't posted when i posted my comments.

i'm better now.

Yess,

finally no more integrated crap graphics!

Please give us a 13'' MBP with dedicated gfx!

Christian

I was super surprised to read about the dedicated video memory!!! Yes!!!!!!
Just like the old days.
I threw away my flower power imac two months ago. My little baby! Never a virus. Dear god that was an awesome system back in 2001. Man oh man. 256 megs of ram, 16 gigs of dedicated video memory,40 gig hard drive. S***!
I then bought a used G4 imac with the stainless steel swivel neck. 17 inch. The screen is stupid awesome. Like damn!!!! But it can't be upgraded to the latest OSX b/c of the power pc chip inside. And I'm not going to look for a software solution. Meh!
If you have seen the 27 inch imac you know it is a mother****** beast!
I'm, getting the low end 27 inchimac after I get the 64 gig ipad with wifi+3G.
AAAAAAAAHHHHHH SNNNNNNAAAAAAAAP!!!!!!

Why would Apple change the all in one design that windows pc manufacturers are all just now starting to copy? Sony, Gateway, Acer, MSI, etc.

Gateway, Acer, MSI...enough said. It's time for Apple to redesign it.

huh

Maybe you need to realize that you don't need to run your games at the top settings.

Yes.....but if i'm dropping $1600 dollars on a computer, thats released the day a game is released, I expect to be able to play said game close to it's highest settings.

I mean, the top of the line iMac only ships with a 5750 which is arguably worse then then previous 4850 (aside from the increase in memory in the new iMac).

This $2000 dollar computer wouldn't even be able to play SC 2 with respectable settings at native res.

The 21.5" should have had the 5750 and the 27 inch should have had at least the 5850, not really any excuses.

Well I am glad I didn't hold out for the new macs. My 27" i5 Quad Core which I paid $1699 for is still a great deal. It still would have cost me an extra $300 to buy a new one AND all I'd really get is a minor speed bump and better graphics (since I don't really game that is not an issue or benefit for me at all).

The SSD option would've been nice but at $600 it is way too pricey, and I am not about to bust open my mac and void my warranty.

I guess the base model upgrade is a bit better, but since my wife doesn't play any games what so ever she would not have benefited much from the video card either. Perhaps the speed bump could have been semi-worth it but I don't know if it would've been $200 worth it for her needs.

All in all, I am glad I bought when I did and at the prices I did. I'll keep my $500 in savings, and in around 3 years when AppleCare is about to expire I will sell and buy whatever the latest generation at that time is.

I thought the Core i3 wasn't faster than the Core 2 Duo.
The i3 is dual core but quad threaded. It's faster in apps that can use all those 4 threads. Any Core 2 Duo is fine for email; surfing; watching movies; reading, the difference between C2D and i3 is negligible

Aha, that's a good answer!

Most people have no idea why they need 8 or 12 gb of RAM, they just like the idea.

Boy you should see me struggle on a 3 year old iMac with 4gb of RAM with just 12 tracks open!

UK pricing?

UK store is back up, but I'm seeing it all messed up. Anyone got any idea of UK pricing on these babies?

Price increase again!

Damn. After the Mini went up the roof, now the iMac is following.
In Europe these were the prices for the 4 basic models (all i euros)
* 1.099 * 1.349 * 1.499 * 1.799
Now:
* 1.199 * 1.499 * 1.699 * 1.999

THAT is pretty bad news: 200 euros extras for the basic 27-models?? Apple is definitely letting us down. Full economic crisis out there and Apple is making more profits than ever, and yet, they increase all prices.

Guys, our favorite company is now exclusively driven by greed. In case there was still a doubt about that.
