Did you customize it at all or is it stock? If stock, they may let you exchange it to the comparable new one.

Custom. I got the 2TB HD and the 2.8 i7. If it's unopened, could I bring it to an apple store, trade it for credit, and then immediately order a new one?

These things are still WAY overpriced ...

I know it isn't a direct comparison (and that I will be flamed) as my PC isn't an all-in-one and isn't as "pretty", but I put together an entire build with the following for about $1200 last December:

*ATI 5850
*i5 750
*1tb HD
*4Gb RAM
*25" Monitor

As prices have come down since then, I could do far better now as well.

Mac OSX and the nicer design/materials are worth something, but it doesn't excuse selling hardware one would normally find in a $600 computer for such big bucks.

I'm guessing your 25" monitor is either 1920x1080 or 1920x1200. If you got a comparable monitor to the iMac's, which has a resolution of 2560x1440, your total would be over $2000.

Looks like a pretty good update to me. The SSD + standard HD option on the 27" is definitely cool. I can't wait for the tear downs to see how we can do it on our own as opposed to paying Apple's steep price.

For all you people complaining about the gaming stuff, seriously, what do you expect? Apple does not market themselves or even target the high end gaming niche for their computer line. They are focused on mobile device gaming right now. Which means they want you to buy an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch and buy games from the App Store. If you want to play the latest and greatest computer game on the highest settings then buy a gaming machine or build your own. But for goodness sake, stop complaining that you can't buy an iMac for high end gaming.

Well I am glad I didn't hold out for the new macs. My 27" i5 Quad Core which I paid $1699 for is still a great deal. It still would have cost me an extra $300 to buy a new one AND all I'd really get is a minor speed bump and better graphics (since I don't really game that is not an issue or benefit for me at all).

The SSD option would've been nice but at $600 it is way too pricey, and I am not about to bust open my mac and void my warranty.

I guess the base model upgrade is a bit better, but since my wife doesn't play any games what so ever she would not have benefited much from the video card either. Perhaps the speed bump could have been semi-worth it but I don't know if it would've been $200 worth it for her needs.

All in all, I am glad I bought when I did and at the prices I did. I'll keep my $500 in savings, and in around 3 years when AppleCare is about to expire I will sell and buy whatever the latest generation at that time is.

Again were is $600 coming from? It shows $750 for me..

Does anyone know how they are doing the second hard drive on the 27" iMac?

I would think they are removing the optical drive to get the SSD in there but it doesn't say anywhere on the site that I could find.

So you expect Apple to make less money, to make it easier for you to buy luxury products during an economic crisis?

Don't try to interpret what I said in a ridiculous manner.
Some people here remember how Steve was indeed proud to bring top speed and technology to the masses, in those days where the Mac was a fantastic bargain (G3, G4, G5...). People would still have alternatives in case they wanted more sophisticated stuff for more bucks.
Nowadays the focus is on customers (like you?) who can afford the expensive stuff, as Apple products tend to be more and more luxury products as you point it out yourself.

It's worth a shot. Apple is usually pretty good about people buying things right around an update.

hang on

So wait - the iMacs get a new generation of processors - but the Mac mini is going to languish in the previous generation - for how long? I've already got enough crap on my desk (monitor and peripherals), I don't want an all-in-one, but now it's going to be slower than snail snot to get a Mac mini?

That sort of really sucks.

Almost as good an update as I had guessed. I hoped for SSD options but never thought we'd get them. I was also hoping for the i5 to drop to $1699 and the i7 drop to just $1999. The ram speeds have been bumped up as well! And we finally have a 1gb GPU!!!!!!!!! :D  :D

My question is...

With these new models, I wonder if Apple has circumvented the need to use OEM hard drives with custom firmware in order to read HDD temperatures and accurately alter the cooling fan rpms.

I would love to be able to add my own SSD+HDD combo, or even replace the built in drive (if it should fail) with one I've purchased, rather than have to send the machine to Apple and pay top dollar for a replacement. =/

Secondly, has USB performance increased? Are there still only two USB controllers on the logic boards, on which the four USB ports, the iSight, the SD card slot, and the Bluetooth and IR receivers all share bandwidth?

...that would be disappointing.

Go check out the Mac Mini. It's not that much slower (in real world testing) than an i3 processor. I can't say why Apple kept the Mini in C2D land but it's really not a big deal. It's pretty much just a name change to the processor. In fact, if you wanna whip an i3 iMac just throw an ssd in the new Mini.

5750? Weak apple. 27" deserves 5850 as BTO if you're willing to give it 4850.
There's speculation that the 5750 is a desktop GPU because the new iMac's lineup matches those of desktop GPUs. Either that or it's a renamed Mobility 5850/5870.

Or Apple did make a big downgrade.

This post never fails to pop up during every Apple refresh, and every time it's still just as ridiculous.

First of all, prices/per hardware piece that you list are exaggerated. Second of all, consumers do not build PCs - they buy them. Third, you assign absolutely no value to the quality of the physical machine, Mac OSX, Mac OSX bundled software, or any and every other feature, such as the iSight cam, bluetooth, airport wireless, etc, etc. Not even to mention the support/customer service and general Apple product ecosystem that comes as part of your purchase.

You even say, "Yes I will be flamed," because you know it yourself. You can't compare the cost of a Mac to a home built piece of junk that has some of the same off the shelf equipment.

Someday I hope to own a Mac. These updates make me excited, even though I have no idea what any of these new specs mean lol.

So, will the $1499 iMac play Starcraft 2 at 1080p on the max detail settings?

Not sure, but as usual, blizzard has worked hard at making sure its games will run on even older systems.

What is SC 2 and how old are you?

iMacs, despite being good at most games, are not for little kids playing mind-wasting computer games.

Sorry gramps, but how old are you? Did you know that SC1 tourneys are an official government sanctioned event in South Korea?

Why is that? Starcraft 2 is for Mac and PC...I've been playing the beta for a while now on my 4 year old iMac.

It's kinda common knowledge that, if you cannot play a game due to frame-rate issue on OS X, that booting up into Windows will yield better FPS. OS X graphic drivers kinda sorta suck compared to their Windows counterparts.

Which i5 CPU's

Anyone know which CPU they're using?

21.5" iMac is using the Clarkdale i5 660 or 670?
The 27" iMac using Lynnfield 780?

Good god Apple, I realize that USB3 is still a little raw for you, but you couldn't see fit to just drill a hole in the case for an eSATA port?
