And I still think MBs should have dedicated cards. iBooks did- why not these? They don't have to be the best in the world.

Form factor?

I much prefer the thinner form factor to having a dedicated GPU I have no use for.

People who obsess over the raw numbers will never be satisfied, since it's going to be replaced anyway.

My blackbook is a year old now and I'm still enjoying my experience entirely. Oh, but woe is me it only has 2GHz and a single layer DVD burner.

Instead of bellyaching, why not just get what you think is the better deal?

i seriously doubt that 99% of Mac owners don't game. in fact, i'd guess that a majority of us DO game, and that majority would appreciate that Mac would do more to appease us. i don't buy the argument to "use a PC for gaming and a Mac for everything else." well, i for one, want my macbook to at least have some rudimentary gaming, and i'll bet i'm not alone.
This new macbook will play Luxor just fine... :D

The upgrade is a retrograde!

i'm not sure it's an upgrade. my macbook c2d 2.0 2Ghz came with a superdrive (november) and 1GB and it will accept 3 Gb of ram

all of the new upgraded ones say upgradeable to 2 Gb.

the only real diff seems to be a paltry .16 on speed and a larger hdd (which most have already upped to anyway)

seems the upgrade is really a retrograde

The Rev. Cs are more aimed at getting the entire notebook line up to 1GB of memory; the base Rev. B MBs only had 512MB of RAM.

I'm sure these ones will be able to accept 3GB of RAM, as long as it's matched. Apple said 2GB was the max on the Rev. B MBs.

Stops MacBook sales eating into MacBook Pro sales.

But yes, I'll agree that this is less of an upgrade, more of a minor update.

Should I?

I bought a macbook just three weeks ago, no joke. I kind of expected this coming, but not so miniscule of an upgrade. So I have a question, should I try bothering to exchange it or not? After all a 40 GB hd and a .13ghz kickup aren't all that wonderful, BUT i've noticed lately that my palmrests weirdly enough are showing discoloration (I thought the problem was fixed)...anyway. So I need advice, and thanks :)

This is a good update and at a good time. Maybe this means that the mbp might not have santa rosa, or this might mean that apple is trying to show that the pros are higher end with santa rosa, and the macbooks are more mid range notebooks.

I'm hoping the new mbps have santa rosa, better graphic cards, and LED (for better battery life).

PS. When are the mbps being updated?

I have to say, while I would have liked to see a bigger upgrade, I think the move to boost RAM and HD space is a wise choice. For most purposes for most people(particularly on a laptop), one increment up or down in processor evolution won't be noticable. However, RAM is always helpful, and consumers are moving into using a lot more HD space with video, pictures, and music (which are all moving to higher resolution/bit rates, too). Consumers aren't using higher tech editing tools, but they've got a lot more content on their computers these days, so these are welcome upgrades. Plus, upgrading the bottom makes apple need to upgrade the top, and with a big expo coming up, chances are good it will be a major upgrade.

The HD increase is a nice move and makes sense with all the iLife pushing. :)
I would have really liked the option of a 1GB stick of RAM, though.

I am incredibly tempted right now!

The update is mediocre, but the low end model is now really nice for an european student. Ill probably get one of these things. I had the sweet taste of mac os x twice last year. To me, that OS is worth another 100$. Its that good. So the low end MB is fine. Id probably not bother with the two faster ones.

You know how much the typical MacBook buyer cares about Santa Rosa?

They don't.

You know how much the typical MacBook user cares about the front side bus?

They don't.

You know how much the typical MacBook user cares about an LED screen?

They don't.

They want it to run iLife apps, surf the Web and run office nicely.

You guys are a bunch of spec whores. No one but you cares about what you're whining about except you.

These are indeed words of wisdom...

I imagine the MBP will be refreshed soon enough also, as the mid to high end MB's now match the processor and have an improved Superdrive. I wouldn't mind seeing the 17" MBP get max RAM for the same money. A guy can dream.

expect disappointment?

the video ipods that are currently on the market was a slight improvement to the previous model. same thing for this new release of mb. i don't think there's going to be anything revolutionary about the upcoming mbp, esp compared to the splash it made the last time it debuted.

am i just pessimistic or should i keep my hopes up?

As Much as i realy realy realy really want to see an updated MBP with santa rosa, it is not going to happen to WWDC.

There is a pretty wide price gap between the higher end MacBook and the MacBook Pro. My question would be if a machine in the $1600-1700 range that included better graphics would appeal to "gamesumers"? The 12" Powerbook used to fall into this price range and that price point is missing. As a 12" Powerbook owner I hope they fill that gap....but I worry that any new smaller, more powerful laptop will be priced higher then the current low end MacBook Pro.

The point has been made that not every product from any manufacturer contains the latest chips and graphics. Companies like HP and Dell use chipsets below the levels of any Apple uses and only a few models include the latest Santa Rosa chip.

These are indeed words of wisdom...

Exactly. I couldn't care less about Santa Rosa (or any other stupid Intel codename for that matter)...

The only thing REALLY missing from the MBs is a reasonable GPU, be it onboard or separate...that's all, and the only reason I am not buying one yet.
For the rest, MBs are a great deal.

This update by Apple means that you can buy a 2GHz Core 2 Duo laptop for $200 less than the Macbook 2GHz machine w/1GB RAM cost a day ago, and yet many folks seem to feel this is not a good thing?

Maybe a reality check is in order -- see what it costs at Newegg to buy a 2GHz C2D laptop. For $1099, the entry level Macbook is a darn good deal. Since these Windows machines don't offer OS X, that makes the Macbooks an even better deal.

Nice try, but no cigar.

No mention in today's article, of course, about the bogus "five new MacBook models" prediction in yesterday's article. Personally, I would prefer it if the rumor sites (including this one) would refrain from publishing frivolous predictions from sources that obviously don't know what they're talking about.

Uhm...as you said this is a rumor site.

Yeah someone has missed the point of the site......

Smallest Possible Leopard Habitat

I have a hunch that this very modest update has nothing much to do with making MacBook users happy. It looks a lot like the baseline, minimal Mac that will credibly run Leopard.

I think the MBs need some dedicated video, or at least an update there. Despite that, this update made me scream when I first heard about it. But I feel so obsolete now that mine is outdated... poor little MB, he's slightly slower now.
