For everyone actually watching the laptop market, a comparable *Vista notebook is almost $900 more from Dell or HP, and $1000 more from Sony.

Well, if you go off the Black Macbook, the Sony's are about $5-600 more.

Things to actually be disappointed over:
Base model was upgraded to faster processor instead of remaining 1.8 and getting a price drop to $999.
The base model has a Combo drive.
The Black Macbook is $175 more because it's black…

Mostly annoying, but it didn't put them behind the curve, it just attempted to justify the same old pricing. Which isn't that bad.

Excuse me...but WHY?

Who made you the all knower of exactly what the consumer wants or needs? I personally don't NEED a dvd burner, and wouldn't want to pay more for it, even if it was a slight increase.

Apple offers product lines for the subsets of the market that they choose to cater to. One such subset are the people that don't give a flying f*ck about dvd burners, myself included.

IMO they offer enough in their low-end MB to counter the fact there is no DVD burner.

So please don't state something as a fact, that is completely your subjective opinion.

Keep your pants on, Sally. We're all just giving opinions on a new release here, no reason to get upset.

DVD burners are ridiculously cheap these days, the difference in cost is probably almost negligible. And as I said, I'd be fine with a bare bones model if it was way cheaper. At $1099, there's no excuse not to have basics like DVD burning. I'm not saying apple should add it and raise prices, I'm saying they could easily afford to include it at THIS PRICE. You're basically defending the idea of paying more and getting less.

You might as well complain that 1 gig is too much ram and argue that they should only have 512 or 256 (even if it's the same price).

They don't even understand what any of that means, and from personal experience, it doesn't matter in the long run. Things just work, and that's what they care about. How the job gets done is irellevant.

I agree that consumers don't understand buzzwords. But they do understand when game performance is lousy. And for running games, it's lackluster performance, not "just working".

And again, I'd love to see apple do a real barebones machine for people who just want to do things like email and web surfing...but it should be closer in cost to where the mini is now.

And speaking of, the mini is ridiculously outdated now as well, when is that update finally going to come?

Tell me about it, my last trip to London taught me that the US dollar is practically worthless! It'll be a peso before long. :p

Yep, quite true. The raising of prices in America makes Americans think that the cost of things goes up, when in fact it's the dollar that is worth less all the time.

The UK price drops are a mini proof of this. We would have seen price drops, but the DOW is too high and a dollar only buys 55¢ now.

Is this true? I would like it if it was, because I'm tired of paying more for things than my American counterparts. The exchange rate speaks for itself, I feel.

£1 = $1.98568 at time of posting (www.xe.com)

Remember we pay 17.5% VAT in the price, whereas the American prices are excluding tax.

Maybe the Pro's are coming

Don't know if this means anything im just speculating... prolly cuz I really was expecting the Pro's today but Apple.com has taken all of its Macbook's and Macbook Pro's off the refurbished Mac list. 3 hours ago they had refurbished Macbook Pro's which I was considering buying after the bad news today. Got home from work to check again and all Macbooks and Macbook Pro's are gone from refurbished list!

Don't Freak Out on Me I Just Really Want A MBP

You idiots expecting more. The MacBook is basically an entry level notebook; therefore, it stands it will use cheaper parts and have less features. I can understand some concern for people wanting a black macbook without the premium. But we can deal with it.

Combo Drives. What's wrong with them? Just because you may need to burn a DVD, doesn't mean everyone does (In fact, most average computer users don't know they have the option of burning DVD's.) So why should they pay for a feature they aren't going to use?

However, with the new clock speeds, I predict an iMac update soon...

Uh... why is everyone hyped up over an LED back light?!? This is not going to be a user-visible change, won't affect the performance of your machine in anyway and yet people keep bringing it up as if it's of great importance... All because of a little bit of mercury hidden away in the existing fluorescent backlights?!?
Do you even know what you're talking about? LED screens are MUCH superior to the current ones. Better battery life and longer brightness life are just two of the many advantages that LEDs have.

Pretty poor update, makes me happy I still have my G4 iBook.
Still, will need to update by year's end, so hopefully Apple will put a competent graphics chip in and lower the price a little.

You are not even in the position to make such a statement. It is like a ford pinto owner saying how he is happy to have his ford pinto because the latest BMW series only takes an extra 0.2 seconds off its 0-100 acceleration.

The GMA 950 and DUAL CORE processor in the macbook is faster than anything you can ever dream of attaining on a PowerPC mac, let's face it. PMG5 performance on a laptop, hey, who is in the position to argue...

crikey!!

listen to all the whining about no santa rosa, no graphics card... THESE ARE MEANT TO BE FOR THE PRO'S!!!!

A macbook is a consumer machhine. it is cheap compared to the pro so that's what you get.

this is like wanting a intel xeon in an imac... wont happen for a while.

$175 for 2gb upgrade

---

What a scam!

You now get 1gb as 2x512. Great. But if you want 2gb Apple STILL charges 175 for 1gb more ram!

damn, that's slimmy. Basically, you either get from them, or throw it out and spend about same for 2gb aftermarket and I guess ebay the 2x512?

Hey Apple, market your overpriced jalopies as antiques. This way, people won't feel so bad paying premium prices for turn of the century hardware.

I hope this isn't all the iPhones fault. I really hope the iMac update is not as mediocre as this one is.

idk if this has been posted yet but im not searching through 35 pages to check

but the lower end macbook model is 50 bucks cheaper with the education discount

Depends what you do on it. 1GB of RAM is plenty for surfing and writing papers (as long as you don't use Word) and iTunes and things like that. If you want to use Parallels or VMWare and you want to run three or four big applications at the same time or you do a lot of video editing, then 2GB is much more comfortable. If you can buy RAM outside of Apple it is much cheaper. I would get the stock 1GB and then decide if you need it later and buy it somewhere else.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Can I get extra GB in my notebook for less money than Apple charges me, after I bought it? Didn't know it was easy to upgrade a laptop!

I'm definately not going for the extra disk space. However, am considering to buy an external huge hard drive. Will I be able to store my iTunes songs and iPhoto library on the external hard disk, and play them from my computer? That would be sweet!

And last but not least, is there a way to copy the hard drive contents from my old G4 iBook to my new MacBook? Need my music and photos and files from that lovely old computer!

Thanks in advance for your answers! :apple:

Seem like good value to me, I don't know what all the fuss is about...

They seem to have bollocksed the update on the Belgian site though, the headers are correct but the detail spec is the previous model. Tsk Apple, you're getting sloppy!

Apple store Belgium Macbook page

Still too expensive compared to the cost in the US regardless of sales taxes. I suppose as they're prbably all made in China then if anything the price in the US should rise rather than the European prices dropping.
