As a SUMMARY, this is the Apple Mac ULTRA-MONOPOLY in action. Of course you would not expect these developmetns of prehistoric laptops if there were Mac clones. But being an ultra-monopoly Apple can do as it pleases. AND THE WORSE OF ALL IS THAT THERE IS NO WAY AROUND IT. A shame for all!!!

Thanks for the quick reply!

Can I get extra GB in my notebook for less money than Apple charges me, after I bought it? Didn't know it was easy to upgrade a laptop!
Yes. In the US a stick of 1GB sells for $50. You could even get two and sell your original RAM sticks on eBay or to a friend. I haven't installed mine but many have and you should be able to find several places on the internet that show you how. Maybe ifixit.com will have something.
I'm definately not going for the extra disk space. However, am considering to buy an external huge hard drive. Will I be able to store my iTunes songs and iPhoto library on the external hard disk, and play them from my computer? That would be sweet!
As long as you are connected, yes iTunes and iPhoto can sit on an external drive.

And last but not least, is there a way to copy the hard drive contents from my old G4 iBook to my new MacBook? Need my music and photos and files from that lovely old computer!

If you buy from an Apple store, take the iBook in and they will do the transfer for you. Otherwise, I believe you can run the iBook in "target" mode and transfer from it like it was an external drive. Search these forums for a definitive answer on that one.

Thanks in advance for your answers! :apple:

You're welcome! :)

Thanks for the advice this is a hard decision.... I really want it by next week cuz this computer is so messed up it turns off all the time so I need to replace it... I will need this comp. for at least 3 years so if that changes anything.... I think I will wait till next Tuesday just to see.. If anyone has anymore ideas get back to me..
Thanks!!!

True.dat

We arent expecting anything spectacular here. Just something up to date... not last year....

I dont understand all of you. Its good computer and good value. SR is completly useless in that machine. Its an ENTRY LEVEL computer. If you buying it you dont need more or you dont care for more. Its just that easy:D Anyway take it or not, just stop whining....

Waaaahhh, no ultra portables!
Waaaahhh, on-board graphics!
Waaaahhh, no new MacPros!
Waaaahhh, only a Combo Drive!

Please, people, get real. It's an update. Maybe not a big one, but it's decent. A lot more for your money. Same prices, but better Hard Drives, Memory, and speeds. Bitching and complaining aren't gonna make your wishes come true, and you've got to admit, some of your wishes are pretty far out there.

Honestly, I think it funny that people are complaining because they're the same people who complain regularly about a LACK of updates.

It's also extremely telling that all the really noisy complainers are newbies: trolls waiting in the wings with no posts to their names, just itching to get their crap into the discussion, methinks.

Trolls, if you're not impressed, vote with your feet and go and buy something from the POS beige-box company that's sponsoring you. You and your vitriol won't be missed.

:D

"Santa Rosa features an updated mobile Core 2 Duo microprocessor. Notably, the Front Side Bus speed has been increased to 800 MHz. The chipset can also dynamically change the FSB speed to save power. Other power savings come from an Enhanced Sleep state where both the CPU cores and the chipset will power down."

How is that useless?????

So much disinformation from the apologists here. Let me repeat it again for all of you: Santa Rosa is even more important for the MacBooks because it includes improved integrated graphics. MBPs use dedicated video cards. MBs use integrated video. Santa Rosa = good for MacBooks. Get it? God...

05/16/06, The MacBook is born.

I think people forget that the MacBook has only been in existence for a year and there have already been two updates since then. How many other computers get updated that often? Frankly, the past update was on a scale that blurred the distinction between Apple's consumer and professional laptop offerings. Apple had to do something to widen the gap between the MB and MBP or risk the MBP becoming obsolete, with the exception of those doing 3D graphics work. We may not like the outcome today but from a business perspective, there was no choice. I will say though, it wouldn't have killed Apple to simply put SuperDrives in all the MBs.

Then where is the model between the Macbook and the MBP? That is the model im looking for.

Something Small, 13 inch screen (Macbook), Decent Processor speed (MacBook), Nice white sleek design (MacBook), a GPU I can play games on? (Macbook Pro, but really, not even)

So where Do I stand? I want a small decent computer, which the macbook is, but the ability if I so desire, to play games. You cannot play games on a GMA950. I dont want to watch a slide show..... But I dont need the "Pro" of a MBP. Just something decent and current!

BTW, do note that being absolutely first isn't necessarily as big of a deal for Apple as it is for HP, Dell, etc...as such, Apple can say "No Thanks" to the price arm-twisting and wait for the initial rush to subside, which benefits them (and us) with lower costs.

Do you mean like how Apple was first to get the 3.0 ghz 8-core CPUs out there in the Mac Pros? ;)

This update IS A JOKE..

Former 12" powerbook usr - sold it a bit o time ago...

I'm going to throw this out there...

I'm a pro usr - on a dual g4 1.8 - waited for 3rd gen g5 then was about to jump, then the intel switch... meanwhile humming along nicely able to do my music projects with freeze track functions in logic if necessary...

ANYHOW

SEEMs to me :) that THE PROS are wanting to move to the consumer machines - AND MANY eventually will. They were LOOKING for it and were left out on this..

I do think it will happen though - SOON maybe as soon as the next quad IMAC? :)

MOST pros - cept video - would be able to do fine with a quad. Moving to a new IMAC or then Mac Pro becomes an interesting choice - many PROS switched to the 24" IMAC...

As the chips become so much more powerful and faster and faster - check intels roadmap... IT DOESN"T MAKE SENSE to dump $2000-$5000 on a tower or laptop IN MY OPINION - because they are outdated SO quickly...

A paradigm shift... PAY LESS for an IMAC and UPDATE more frequently...

I think that is the way many will go... as we get to quads and octos etc....

my 2¢

-but something that i've been thinking about and wanted to share..

this updated still stunk btw

Do you also belive the news on TV??:D Yeah you are right but even if there is ANY gain its minimal. Thats at least what Andatech claims and I have no reason to disagree with them. FSB is like what 130MHz? You really wont notice that. I dont think SR in MB will really change battery life. We will see sooner or later though. But it is entry level machine and it's cheap.!!

Well then based on that logic there was no update at all since the cpu was only updated by 160mhz... which you really won't notice. Sorry. Update sucks.

Looking for blu-ray drives in these suckers.

WHEN WAS THE YEAR OF HD?

I have last year's MacBook, and as long as you max out the memory games (like WoW) actually play rather well on the GMA 950. I only lost frames when going into places like the dwarven city, and I've seen that place bring top-of-the-line desktop systems to their knees.

The truth is, it's usually the network, not the GPU, that is the biggest bottleneck when playing WoW. Just turn the floaty character names off, and you'll get a much bigger speed bump than any GPU upgrade could ever give you.

So all this whining about the graphics chipset seems much ado about nothing to me.

(Clue: The screen is only capable of 1280x800 anyway, so it's not like there's a ton of work for a GPU to do even when rendering in 3D or what-not.)

SR would probably be nice if I was hooking it up to multiple high-definition displays for desktop spanning, I suppose. Otherwise, I'm baffled as to why anybody cares.

I think C2D is a worthwhile upgrade, and 802.11n is a VERY big deal to me, since I network with a lot of local hardware. I have a policy of upgrading no more than once every two years, but that's the only thing keeping me from throwing my current system onto Craigslist and snapping up a new one.

Besides, my dual-G5 tower in the media room is in far more desperate need of replacing. I gotta save my pennies for when Apple releases the next-gen C2D minis.

Yes, the update is skimpier than anticipated (maybe some shouldn't take "rumors" as facts), being as Mac seems a little behind on some aspects like the DVD Combo on the base version and maybe a better GPU would be nice, but in any case see this:

2.16Ghz (big, better than most pc on the market)
120 GB HD
1G Ram
8xSuperdrive
13.3" glossy lcd
GMA 950 (pretty standard for a 13.3" - most PC's have the same, not all but most)
And (student discount) a warranty of $183.

YOU SHOW ME A PC WITH THESE SPECS, ESPECIALLY 2.16 GHZ CORE 2 DUO,
FOR $1,200, that outweighs even MAC OS X, then I will stay with pc,
But I highly doubt that any Pc has a 2.16 Ghz INTEL duo 2 core processor which is 13.3" for $1200 (student price), and yes I am factoring student discounts into the mix, when it's all said and done, if you go PC then your really going to miss out, have fun with windows.

This is all very nice and well, but even Dell offers a US$129 upgrade to a nVidia graphics card from the GMA950 on its similarly-priced notebooks. If Apple did this too, I'd probably buy a Macbook tomorrow.
