Sony MacBooks?

BEHOLD: MacBook keyboard on upcoming Sony Vaio (with pics) http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3698

Does this mean that Sony will build Apple-Branded ultra-portable MacBooks or strike an oem deal to ship VAIO-OSX's? Or maybe Sony simply wants to encourage "hackintosh'ers" to pull up their sleeves?

Gotta tell ya - these vaio's are exactly the ultraportable we wanted from Apple yesterday but did not get. Check out the new SZ also on that forum, its kind of the next MacBook 13" with Santa Rosa. They both going to have SolidState-HDD soon. (like the VAIO G1 0.9kg that sells in Japan)

PLUS - its the first time Sony is painting them COMPLETELY BLACK (their past 4 years policy was min. 4 colors and/or color combinations. Its the first uni-color laptop in many years) ----------> THAT SUGGESTS THAT THEY WANNA DIFFERENTIATE VAIOs AND VAIO-APPLE MACBOOKS?

Nah, it just means that chiclets have made a comeback after a 20 year hiatus.

You sure read a lot into a single feature that "looks" like a Macbook-feature.

I think you need to calm down and put a little thought into what you are writing. The choice of keyboard design does not in any way suggest that Sony will be designing computers for Apple or that they are going to form a link of any sort. In many ways Apple competes more with Sony than someone like Dell as both companies produce 'premium' products with a large aesthetic component. As far as expecting a lightweight mac yesterday, I don't think that anyone really was - even the informed rumour sites agree that any possible ultraportable is a while away.

As far as the updates go. Would have liked to have seen more but this way they are cheaper. At any rate am not in the market so at present I don't care.

I dunno about expecting that kind of machine yesterday but I still think that something that small will come from apple at some point.

I think a thin and light (though not necessarily small) will be out before then. I'm hoping at wwdc with the new MBPs.

For all the moaning the new machines aren't bad. I can now get a 2GHz macbook for £600. That's a nice deal.

In four months Apple can upgrade the macbook and not release beta-hardware (let all the other PC suppliers sort it out first). I don't see the problem.

Did the premium for the black Macbook go up?
Now there's £120 between the two models for 40GB of harddrive space and paint.
If you BTO a 160GB drive on the white model the difference is still £70!

Get the white one then.

I love my blackbook. The black finish is very nice. (though the plastics on macbooks generally could be better).

I think I should be rewarded for reading all posts in this thread. I can't believe how much nonsense people can talk about such a non-important speed bump. What a wonderful site :)

Yes, it's a bummer there were no MBP's yesterday, but perhaps they're coming next tuesday or at WWDC. Big deal. But whatever the release dates, it was clear that Apple would not put the newest eggs to the Macbook basket. It's great that MB's got 4MB cpu caches acress the entire line, and upping RAM was also nice. Compared to what was available yesterday, today's offering is a great deal.

Now stop whining already. MB is and will be a consumer laptop which is meant for people not necessarily needing top performance. For us who need (or like) top performance, there is and will be the pro line which whill get its update some time very soon.

I really want the black one, though but I think it's bad value compared to say, a larger HD.

OK. Sadness.

If there's no MBP updates at WWDC... We can all just wait for Penryn at the end of the year. :D It's only another 6 months!

Apple MacBook: Yesterdays technology at today's prices.

EVERYONE would've been happier had they stuck with 1.8 and 2.0 and gone with Santa Rosa. Now the graphics, CPU and chipset on the MB will be a generation behind every other laptop for the next 6 months.

Good work Apple. Idiots.

As someone waiting to buy their first Mac I am FURIOUS with Apple and their continued raping of MB buyers.

The MBs are the line of computers that will benefit most from SR and Apple do THIS? I actually cannot believe it. They are absolute bastards.

I think you should watch your language. Clearly you're the I*iot here, not Apple. Go found a company and invent something better, or buy your cheaper PC, do we care?

Should there be any further updates over these in the near future. Otherwise I'm going to pounce on one of these in a month or so.

Still too expensive compared to the cost in the US regardless of sales taxes. I suppose as they're prbably all made in China then if anything the price in the US should rise rather than the European prices dropping.

The Chinese Yen is normally kept very close in value to the Hong Kong Dollar, and the Hong Kong Dollar is pegged to the US Dollar. So the relative costs in USD will remain the same, while the cost in EUR, GBP or AUD should drop.

i agree about the MacBooks being a good deal... i will probably be buying a laptop this summer for my startup business as an imaging specialist, and eventhough i'd be considered "pro" (or whatever) i believe the stats between macbook and macbook pro are too close to justify the huge price difference...

Hi there,

no way. I have both here in the agency and the MBP is way faster, way more color accurate, way better in quality. If you need it for biz please get with the MBP or a MacPro, or you will be dissapointed.

Cheers,
Dave

How can any update be a bad thing? If Apple waited for the next best technology before updating, things would never be updated. Just be happy with what you've got!!

This is true indeed. I think the main fear that people have in the forums is that it'll be another 6-12 months before they see the next update!

Integrated graphics are what they are, no amount of spin, twists or even blatant story telling can change that. Its an achilles heel. Apple should have an option for its craptacular Intel graphics.I guess the option is Macbook pro:cool:

Let's just hope the 15" MBP update isn't just a 6x Superdrive to 8x Superdrive bump, with 160Gb HDD across the board. Then you'll really see tears!

I can't look through all the pages, but does anyone know what the hd space was on these before the update? And RAM if anyone knows that as well?

Actually integrated graphics could be fabulously fast. Just look at the XBox. That used integrated graphics.

Integrated graphics are only slow because the companies won't make fast versions.
