I can't look through all the pages, but does anyone know what the hd space was on these before the update? And RAM if anyone knows that as well?

The top one had a 120GB drive and jumped up to 160GB (and the other ones similarly, moved up one).
RAM was the same except for the low-end one which originally had 512MB.

All in all, an incremental update with little to speak of except to say, 'It's a nice gesture to tide us over until Leopard.'

I agree these laptops are nice, but I am not excited about the update either.

If you consider that this is the second update since the MacBook Pro was updated I would think that there is nothing unusual with this release. As someone who has noticed many "incremental" updates over the years this one falls in that realm. With Apple you sometimes get minor but appreciated tweaks, sometimes you get a whole new line.

Hasn't it only been 1 year since there was a major Ibook/MacBook change?

OK.. from my personal point of view, this is great.

I was just about to buy a macbook to replace an iBook and now it's got a few extra bumps.

More memory as standard, larger HD and a processor bump too - also I'm in the UK so it's £50 cheaper too. Bonus.

I don't need flashy graphics because it'll be a music machine, I know it can hack it for my requirements cos my old 1.33 iBook can pretty much do what I need it to.

Happy days.

From the bits and pieces I've read in this thread, I strongly urge some people to not the difference in general purpose/consumer laptop and pro laptop.
If you need a machine for film/video/rendering of 3D models or proper gaming, a macbook isn't the right machine - stop kidding yourself that it is because you don't want to pay the price of the pro.

..... and let's hope that Apple fills the gap with a smaller, more powerful machine soon. We need a Pro smaller then 15"!!

One year in the computer industry is like ten. Think of it like dog years. One year on MacRumors is like a century. If you've been lurking here long, you wouldn't be surprised to read: "Wasn't the last time the MacBook was updated sometime before I was born? And this is all we get?"...

I don't get all the hoopla here. Apple didn't make a big show of it, they updated their site, put out a press release, and bumped the specs on the MacBook while dropping the price some (at least in Europe). From the comments here, the lack of "wow" or whatever, you'd have thought the world was ending.

I myself wouldn't be surprised at all to see a major revision in the MB and MBP lines before the end of the year. New form factors and the whole lot. This update feels to me like Apple wanting to keep the MacBook competitive until then.

Well said. If I just wanted my new lappy to run Ableton Live a Macbook would be fine, but as I eventually want it to be a live performance powerhouse running Ableton and VJ software hooked into Ableton, I have to bite the bullet and spend the extra spondoolicks on a Macbook Pro.

I do agree with earlier comments though that Apple have made a mistake by keeping the combo drive in the cheapest model. Über lame, imho.

The day before the upgrades were unveiled, my computer-challenged sister bought her two kids (ages 15 and 13) his-and-her white MacBooks (1GB/80GB/2GHz). The store (Apple Store?) informed her that the new MacBooks had just arrived and gave her $200 off per MacBook. I assure you, no one in her family is agonizing over their decision.

If the WINDOWS drivers for this thing aren't complete and fully functional, I don't really see why the OS X drivers should/would be. And if Apple released this spiffier graphics chip but didn't include the MAIN advantages it has over the GMA950 (hardware T&L
...
My point is, I think it's still just a tad too early. We'll get it next rev. :)

On the other hand, if Apple had bumped the integrated graphics, you could be looking forward to the better drivers - certainly no later than 10.5.

As it is, you won't see any improvement, ever. You'll have to buy a newer Apple.

Just wanted to say that in all the time that I've been going to Macrumors (several years), I've never seen a single article get so many comments and positive/negative votes. This is a really hot topic!

 oh boo hoo I can't get a MBP for $1,000 screw you apple! how dare you make products that not everyone can afford! You capitalist pigs!

/sarcasm

really kids, calm down, it's a minor update which is typical. Apple doesn't have to redesign everything just because they got some faster processors and bigger HDs.

mmmmmm, I think there's some hardware manufacturer that pay apple for voiding their stores from combo drives.

Actually, if you check the history books you'll find that Windows NT was developed about 20 years after UNIX - which is the core of OSX.

old software = good
old hardware = bad

From my perspective, Apple using UNIX core is the best thing ever happened within the whole IT industry. Many of my colleagues and friends share the opinion. UNIX is a rock solid foundation and Apple knows how to make practical and pretty user interface, so that's like best of both worlds. Even the most hard-core UNIX geeks have fallen in love with OSX once they've double-checked that it's a real UNIX down there.

Windows-people have been waiting for a major virus attack against OSX for more than 6 years now. There is none. How long will it take to write one against Windows?

That said – I did like Windows NT4, for what it's worth. That's the only Windows I have ever liked (and I have used them all beginning from Windows 1.0 that fit in a single 1.44" disk). NT4 was stable and fast for a Windows, one must admit; but then again, who wrote it? Not really Microsoft's credit...

What's the problem? Apple is only clearing inventory for the people who want to get the cheapest laptop possible. Once they're including BluRay to the highend models, the low-enders will get the slowest superdrives.

The only problem being, what to call the BluRay drive? Will it be a HyperDrive or a BlueDrive? And once they get the DL BluRay drives out, will they be ExtremeDrives or what?

That's one of the bigger headaches at Apple for the moment ;)

Or just call the DVD burning drive Combo, and the BluRay one Super :)

Everybody who has called this a "160 MHz upgrade" has revealed themselves to be UTTERLY CLUELESS about the difference between Core Duo and Core 2 Duo CPUs. You can safely ignore everything those people have to say forever.

Other's have already responded to this, but I can't resist...

The Macbook has had Core 2 FOR SIX MONTHS ALREADY. This is indeed just a 160MHz bump. Better than nothing, sure. But not what was needed on the Macbook.

They moved up a generation in CPU chipset.

No they didn't.

How can any update be a bad thing? If Apple waited for the next best technology before updating, things would never be updated. Just be happy with what you've got!!

They didn't have to wait for anything, there's tons of better options available RIGHT NOW for video. As others have pointed out, putting in a better video solution would have been cheaper than the bump they made to the CPU, and more appreciated as it would make the machine far more well rounded.

Nah, it just means that chiclets have made a comeback after a 20 year hiatus.

More's the pity. I prefer my powerbook kb (similar MBP) to my macbook.

Yeah. chiclet keyboards need to die. It blows my mind anyone would bring them back. They died for a very good reason. Apple's about the last company I'd expect to use them, as they typically are known for solid keyboards.

I can't imagine having to use the Macbook's keyboard for any length of time. Sony's using them too on a lot of models, though they go through fads like that.

WTF APPLE?

This is indeed the most relevant post. Really this thread could and probably should just have this single post :D
Mac users to Apple: WTF?!? :D

Actually integrated graphics could be fabulously fast. Just look at the XBox. That used integrated graphics.

Integrated graphics are only slow because the companies won't make fast versions.

Technically true, though a separate Geforce 3 was still more powerful. It's ultimately still a cost cutting measure on the X-Box and 360. (Though it would be great if the worst integrated graphics right now were as good as like a Geforce 7600GT or something like that!)
