I’ve been using a small card only wallet for years. Never come close to losing it. The key is to keep it in a different pocket than your phone. I take my wallet out a couple of times a day. I take my phone out a hundred times a day. Putting your wallet in the same pocket as your phone and relying on weak magnets and a software feature to notify you when you inevitably pull out the phone and the wallet falls is just a matter of time until you lose it.
Yes, I agree. I use apple pay for most everything, and I can go days or weeks without ever needing or touching my wallet. I have been undecided on the usefulness of the magsafe wallet, but airtag support would be worth getting. I have a 3rd party magsafe case too, so I am thinking this won't work with those either.

I ordered one based on "find my" support but may cancel that if that really just means the phone remembers when the wallet was disconnected. that really doesn't add very much usefulness (and isn't find my support in terms of tracking or location). I am much more likely to lose (or misplace) the wallet if it wasn't attached to the phone.

I came close to ordering. I don’t typically take my wallet with me every day so finding where I last left it in the house is sometimes a challenge. Having actual FindMy support that could precisely locate where my wallet is would make this worth purchasing. If it’s just remembering where you last had your wallet attached to your phone, it’s not very useful unless you always have it attached.

People should stop pushing the YouTubers’ narrative that the wallet doesn’t hold to the phone. After a year of use it never fell and the magnet are just at the perfect strength for the wallet to stay attached but be easily removed when pushing on its edge.

My only complaint with this wallet is that as you keep pushing on its edges to detach it the paint is moving away.
Yup, using for close to a year it never falls off. People in thread don't even own one and bitching.

I asked a guy on Apple Chat Support just now and he took a few minutes to "check" and then said "As I can see its just an software update."

So I guess I won't order a new wallet, old one should get it too.

Waiting to see if the magnets have been improved since last year. I tried one for a week with my 12 Pro, and after almost losing my wallet twice when putting the phone in my pocket I returned it. The find my function is nice, even if there is no reason this couldn’t have been introduced on 12’s as well given they clearly can sense when MagSafe devices are attached, but unless they strengthened the magnets I won’t be wasting my time or money.

Surely any such software update would be ready in iOS15, since these wallets are being released next week?

Here is the full note.

**Requires iPhone Leather Wallet with MagSafe and iPhone 12 or later with Find My enabled in iOS 15. Not supported on Clear Case with MagSafe.

Yeah, dunno, I have the 15 beta and it doesn't show anything, but maybe it's a last-minute addition on release, maybe to avoid spoilers from the announcement today. Either way, it's enough doubt to make me not spend $60 on a new wallet for now until confirmed.

Same. It also doesn't explain why the clear case wouldn't support it, as it would imply that the functionality is limited to simply stamping the GPS when the wallet and the phone are detached.

I don't remember there being a tear down of the original wallets where the option for this was raised, but if this works with the old ones, there has to be enough "intelligence" inside for the phone to be able to differentiate your wallet from other wallets, or just other MagSafe products. Even if they weren't ready to roll out the "Find My" functionality last year, you'd have though they'd have allowed you to "register" your wallet in your phone.

I still shake my head seeing this .... crap design.
What are they thinking.
Do you have one? The MagSafe wallet is a big part of why the 12 mini is by far my favorite iPhone ever. It fits the curve of the phone perfectly and lets me use the phone without a case but still be able to set it down without resting on the camera bump. I had used a slim front-pocket wallet for 15 years and this is a big improvement over even that.

It’s definitely a NEW product everyone cmon. This is not a software feature clearly. Of course all MagSafe products will be backwards compatible because that’s the whole point but they’re not enabling find my on older wallets because there’s presumably some new hardware in the wallet itself that makes this possible. Also, I have a feeling they wanted a sleek look without the extra rfid stuff cluttering things so they just decided to forgo the additional animation when you have the clear case on. I’ve always wondered why the heck the wallet didn’t come up with the clear case.

The last one was also called "iPhone Leather Wallet with MagSafe" (see Wayback archive here http://web.archive.org/web/20210613...hone-leather-wallet-with-magsafe-saddle-brown)

But that was model MHLT3ZM/A (for brown) and this one is MM0Q3ZM/A (for brown) ... (both $59)... so I guess it is technically new/different...

https://www.apple.com/apple-events/september-2021/ 54:19 is where she says "last known location" and shows it as a notification setting in the UI ... definitely not realtime tracking

K screw it, I'm buying it, good luck to me *salutes while ship sinks*
Yeah even the Black wallet color says new so that’s why I’m assuming it’s completely new hardware creating this feature. Either way I can’t decide between green or purple because they’re both slick.

On iOS 15 RC I’m able to add MagSafe Accessories in the FindMy app. But it won’t recognise my MagSafe Wallet.

My 12 Pro already knows when my wallet is disconnected. Why would this not just be part of iOS 15 and not a physical hardware update if theirs no apple tag tech in the wallet itself?

Yep we all agree but it's still not confiiiirrrrmed so we don't know. Judging by the new SKU, RamGuy's confirmation with iOS15 RC above, and the UI in the keynote video showing the wallet as a recognized device, I'm going to assume you need the new version of the wallet. But I could be wrong. I'll update this thread after iOS 15 is out on 9/20 and I have both the old and new wallet to compare. UPDATE: nm, I canceled the order 😆 (I'll just get it when this one falls apart and I really need a new one)
Until then, order at your own risk, unless your old wallet is old and beat up by now anyway or you want a new color.

As someone who just lost their AirPods Pro, and tried using Find My… it really isn’t useful to just know the last place it was connected. I knew when I was last connected, I need help knowing when it feel out my pocket. So I wouldn’t recommend this wallet solely based on this “feature”.

Not going to pay another $60 to replace my existing one and move away from a clear case so that I can maybe know where it fell off. Disappointing.

that shouldn’t be considered findmy.

Agreed. This is absurd. The phone already knows you're attaching a magsafe wallet to it. It cant just set a location upon detachment?
Same thing I’m thinking. The current one should be able to drop a pin upon detachment.

Doesn’t seem like it’s true Find My.

“In this case, the MagSafe leather wallet will notify users of the last known location where the wallet was separated from the phone. It will not, however, provide real-time tracking.”

Also, does it still only hold 3 cards?
You can add more by gluing magnets to the outward facing part of your MagSafe Wallet then attaching powerful magnetic strips to each of your cards. Let me know how that works out? 🤣 🤣 🤣

Your 12 Pro doesn’t “know” when your v1 wallet is disconnected. It only “knows” that there was a MagSafe device of some description previously connected. It terms of whether it was a wallet and, more specifically, *your* wallet, it’s clueless.

The functionality to “register” MagSafe devices in Find My is in iOS 15. The software update is *there*, but it will not work for existing wallets.

As I’ve said several times above, this is not just a software tweak. It’s hardware as well, as it needs the functionality to be able to identify your wallet specifically.

Sorry folks, but if you want this, you need to pay again.
