The existing Apple MagSafe cases have hardware (presumably RFID) that identifies the colour of the case (and maybe other info) - you get a short animation on the screen of the iPhone in the same colour as the case when you attach it.

I don't have a wallet, but I'd presume the 'old' wallet doesn't have anything like this, so the phone wouldn't know that a wallet was attached/detached (as opposed to any other device). Maybe this new version just contains the RFID chip that identifies it as a wallet to the phone so the phone knows to store a location fix when it's removed.

Your 12 Pro doesn’t “know” when your v1 wallet is disconnected. It only “knows” that there was a MagSafe device of some description previously connected. It terms of whether it was a wallet and, more specifically, *your* wallet, it’s clueless.

The functionality to “register” MagSafe devices in Find My is in iOS 15. The software update is *there*, but it will not work for existing wallets.

As I’ve said several times above, this is not just a software tweak. It’s hardware as well, as it needs the functionality to be able to identify your wallet specifically.

Sorry folks, but if you want this, you need to pay again.
lol I was quoted with something I never said

I suspected the new wallet has a NFC antenna which last years' wallet lacks. I like the concept however Find My app is only going give me a general location of where I detached it from my iPhone. I misplace stuff around home all the time so finding my MagSafe Wallet is like Summer School, "It is somewhere in this room."

Do you have one? The MagSafe wallet is a big part of why the 12 mini is by far my favorite iPhone ever. It fits the curve of the phone perfectly and lets me use the phone without a case but still be able to set it down without resting on the camera bump. I had used a slim front-pocket wallet for 15 years and this is a big improvement over even that.
There's no need to have one to judge if the design is crap, it is.

IDEA.
Get a NFC card/sticker.
Place that in your wallet.

Use shortcuts to run a automation that when a nfc tag lost connection to send co-ordinates
You're a smart cookie. I purchased a 20 pack of NFC stickers from Amazon today. Thank you for the idea. As much as I like the wisteria colour, I rarely use my MagSafe Wallet so hopefully this will work with the clear MagSafe case on.

Only apple.

Adding tracking to an accessory that should be on your phone.

Instead of fixing it so it stays attached they add tracking so you can find it when it inevitably falls off.

Mind stays attacked. Never had it fall off.

People should stop pushing the YouTubers’ narrative that the wallet doesn’t hold to the phone. After a year of use it never fell and the magnet are just at the perfect strength for the wallet to stay attached but be easily removed when pushing on its edge.

My only complaint with this wallet is that as you keep pushing on its edges to detach it the paint is moving away.

Agreed. I have the apple leather wallet and the apple leather case. It holds and never falls off without aggressive friction. I take it in and out of my jeans pockets without issue.

how well does it hold on without the case?

attached directly to the smooth glass back?

So do we know if the 2020 wallets are compatible with this feature..? or the new ones are equipped with some type of hardware chip?

I guess this depends on how you use your phone. Mine disconects at least a dozen times a day...so much so that I rarely carry it attached anymore...I just keep it in my pocket separated from the phone. I have found the wallet on the floor board of my car or in my driveway several times in the past when it came disconnected while exiting the car.

Couldn't agree more. Since had it, never regret it. The size is so perfectly on my 12 mini and still comfortable to grab the phone. And also, I almost never use my old pocket wallet since I use the magsafe wallet.

It now says “Not supported on iPhone 12 Clear Case with MagSafe“, wonder if it means it works with iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 13/13 Pro Clear Case with MagSafe. Tried to chat with support but got “Due to extremely high volumes we are unable to answer your chat at this time. Please try again later.”…

Nice find. That’s an interesting change.

though as I recall the iPhone 12 clear case was used for both the 12 and 12 pro.

Just chatted with an agent and the agent said -
“I understand. The link for the Leather Wallet says that it's compatible to any iPhone 13, meaning to say, it should be compatible with iPhone 13 Clear Case with MagSafe as well.”
Sounded to me the agent was not sure either…

I've received my new MagSafe wallet today (NZ), and yep, it's different to the old one. You get the Find My prompt when you attach it, it gives it a name, and appears in the Devices tab of Find My (not Items).

Just got my new wallet today. I have to admit that this is one of the poorest integrations I’ve ever came across. The fact that you can’t search for it inside of your house (like you can with AirTags) just makes this whole “find my” integration useless. I’m so darn disappointed.

Would this work with third party cases that have MagSafe functionality ie Spigen, Otterbox? I don't want to splurge on a first party case.
