First off- long, long time reader- first time poster! I'm planning on making the switch to the world of apple within the next couple of weeks. I'm at a point in my life where I want to simplify things (I just turned 23  ), and I know that the best place to start is with my home computer.

Question for all you verterans: With the new powerbooks being announced this past monday, about how long until they arrive in the apple stores???? I know I can order online, but I'd LOVE to have and to hold this weekend whilst I sit on my rear and do nothing this sunday!

Everytime I try to call the apple store at lenox here in atlanta, I listen to a ring chorus for about 5 minutes and then hang up...and the 15 minute drive to the mall is just out of the question ! ;)

Any help/info would be appreciated! Thanks again!

I have mine.

Actually, I bought it for my wife today and I haven't seen it since I showed her Garage Band. Keep trying to call the store; maybe at a less busy time?

Me too :(

Ordered on 01/31/2005 at 07:45 and delivery date is on ore before 8 feb. So it's indeed longer than they are advertising.

vpc is painful at best. its bloated (a microsoft product), badly written, and expensive ($400 for the standard edition with an XP licence i believe). consider that in comparison with the adobe or quark software (both reputable companies with good programmers). no contest.
I would like to see you write a fast x86 emulator...

Tell me about it. I ordered my system on Jan 23rd originally. They bumped me up to the newer version so I was okay with the wait. But now watching the FedEx tracking has just been painful.

Is it just me, or is this a new ship location for Apple? I've gotten plenty of stuff from Taiwan, but a friend of mine got a Powerbook and his shipped from Shanghai…

mines coming from either Shangai or Hong Kong (dont recall, shangai seems most likely though) anywho that was estimated to arrive on Feb 10-11th

Think you'll be getting the PBs much later as 7th and 8th February are the first 2 days of the Chinese New Year. And this holiday is a big holiday to the Chinese community all over the world. Hopefully the factories are not closed more than the first 2 days. I know of places in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan where shops and factories are closed for the first 15 days of the Lunar New Year.

As for me, still deciding which PB to get: the 15" or the 17", to make my switch. Am planning to go to a store here in Singapore tomorrow to order my PB. Just need to decide by tonight which size to get. :p

I'm glad I'm not the only tracking a powerbook. I wonder how many hits FedEx gets a day from people waiting for new powerbooks.
I think they get several dozen a day from me. I've added the darn page to my bookmarks...

Unless you need to carry it around primarily, get the 17" PowerBook. I take mine to my office a few times a month and it's fine. Any more, and carrying it on the NYC Subway would drive me nuts.

My 15" PB (standard) that I ordered the day of the announcement (no more than a couple hours after) was SUPPOSED to ship on the 2/03, then was pushed back to 2/18. I decided then that I wouldnt have it in time for the new semester (2/14) and I should just go ahead and upgrade the HD and video. Now it only has a ship date a day later than originally.

Oh, and the printer they sent me was defective. :(

Oh well...just gonna borrow an iBook for school until it comes.

Thanks for the advice. I intend to bring my PB to work daily and I take Singapore's version of the Subway to work. I'm just wondering whether the extra 2 inches of screen space and digital audio I/O justifies me killing my back. :D

brilliant, my PB has departed from Luxembourg and that was 2 days ago.

anyone else having problems tracking with TNT?

From what I recall of the "Dual 2.5GHz PowerMacs Shipping" thread, MANY people had trouble tracking with TNT. I think your machine may arrive before the TNT page is updated to indicate that it is our for delivery.

That's kinda funny... I thought I was the only one that did that. It's even sitting on my Bookmarks toolbar below the address bar in Firefox.

Well, the store has delayed the 12- and 15-inch SD models to 5-7 and 7-10 days, so they aren't even meeting demand for online orders. It will probably be some time before the Apple retail stores have them, and even longer for other resellers. Some may have received early shipments, but when they sell out, they're out, and it'll be a waiting list, just like the Mac mini and iPod shuffle.

My guess is at least 2 more weeks, but that's not qualified by anything, really.

Not true! All 3 of my local Apple Retail stores had the 15" models by Wednesday last week and I picked up my 12" SD model Thursday night! Outpost.com lists a few of the new models as same day shipping which mean they're in stock. So look around, they're out as long as you don't need BTO. And I got the feeling that these aren't selling out fast at all.

It's been strange, the Apple online store has been slow in the past month. I was gonna order a Shuffle at the online store but first called a local Apple retail store and they had a dozen in stock. Got it there when I would've had to wait until the end of the month for it to ship.

I didn't mean to say that retailers didn't receive any, just that they've received their shipments, and when they sell out, they may not be restocking soon. Thus, if your local retailer didn't get any or sold them all, you'll be waiting awhile since the main Apple store has to fill its orders first, and there is currently a delay on some of the stock configurations.

If there are ones in stock locally and you want a base config, by all means, go get it! I agree with you that they aren't selling too fast...it seems that Apple counted on that though, and there isn't a huge supply in the channel.

Well it looks like I'm finally making some headway. According to FedEx my PB left Shanghai today and it made to Anchorage. Within two hours it has left Anchorage and now I'm waiting to see where it is going to show up. Its getting closer and closer!

Excuse my ignorance if this has been posted already, but I was wondering if anyone knew how the 1.67Ghz G4 powerbooks would perform against the 1.6Ghz G5 iMac? Would the fact that the iMac is a G5 mean it would be run faster than the G4? Judging from what has been said by other posters, the front side bus is more important so am curious as to what someone in the know thinks.

For what I know, the iMac G5 is more capable at multitasking as it will feel smoother than the PowerBook. There are some programs that run faster on a G4 because of 32-bit memory addressing, or something like that. I think both would be comparable.
