It's all about processing power, and the single core G4 just isn't cutting it. A faster airport extreme card is needed as well (108 mps). 2GB of RAM is just not enough. Apple needs to stop putting all of there efforts towards a new ipod of the month and realize that they are a "computer" company. Roll over some of the research and development money away from itunes/ipod sector, and put it towards the powerbook.

Uhhh, they posted record profit last quarter. I'd say that puts them in a better position to be an iPod company than a computer company, even if it doesn't please your personal tastes.

Do the memory sticks have to match in the new PowerBook? For some reason crucial was pushing two sticks which usually means they have to match.

For example, can I just buy 1 1 gig sim and add it for a total of 1.5 gigs of memory?

Thanks.

well you havent got much choice with speed lol 1.67 is the 15/17" speed at the moment, upgrade to 1GB ram is a must, if you can 1.5GB would be an investment in the long run. Im not really a fan of 7200rpm drives..someone still has to convince mee its worth payin all that money for such a small speed bump. Thats about it! 80GB should be ok for your needs. I got mine on student discount (in UK) so I got a gig of ram and 60gb w/ my 12" ibook for the normal retail price (£700) hehe.

G luk with ur purchase:)

Gotta disagree with the RAM advice here. I owned (and just recently sold) the most recent PowerBook 1.5Ghz model. I had 1.5GB of RAM, whereas I had used 1GB in my PowerBook before that (TiBook 1Ghz). 1.5GB is great if you are doing "single app" work, like heavy Photoshop or video editing or things like that. If you're counting on it to be sweet with respect to multitasking in the sense of application switching, though, you'll be disappointed. I'm one of those users who likes to have 12-20 apps open at once, and switching was quite a pain, despite the fact that none of those apps required an insane amount of memory by themselves. This isn't the place to have an in-depth debate about OS X memory management (but man, we could have a fun one!), but I'd say save the money and go with 1GB total RAM. It's what I plan to do with the new one I'm ordering.

Thank god, I'm not the only one who sold the most recent rev. for this new model! I thought i was nuts.

Duff-Man says....while I am not overly excited by the new PB's I am still very seriously considering upgrading mine...the 15" is the perfect size for me, the screen resolution is now ideal for me too, and the price drop and other add-ons make it attractive...that and having some extra $$ at the moment too...heheheh....anyway, I'll ponder it for a few days, check 'em out at the local shops then decide....oh yeah!

Yep, that will work just fine.

Only the PowerMac G5's require you to install RAM in pairs.

I am glad they called the press out for this

They should have released this crap quietly. The only thing of note is Apple's attempt to take business away from Adobe. Everyting else...meh. When they invited the press, I thought they would redesign the look of the powerbook, or something along those lines, not just do minor adjustments. I noticed the event hasn't even gotten a blurb on the places I check the news. Both the other events had front page press on CNN tech news.

Nah, not nuts at all. If you're a really smart buyer, you can lose minimal amounts of money buying/selling computers around upgrade cycles and always have the latest equipment. From the time I sold my TiBook in August of '04 to now, through various deals (all legitimate), I've owned a 12" iBook, a 15" PowerBook (1.5Ghz), and now a PowerBook 1.67Ghz v2, all for a net "loss" of under $150. All new machines (not refurbs) when I bought them, too.

My New 15" is already preparing shipment. I ordered around 6:30 est tonight

OMG i ordered when it was friggen announced and its still being "manufactured". Did you have ant BTO Options? lucky bastage...

So does the 15" now seem like the best value?

15.2" vs 12.1", +$500 difference, +33% more
+3.1" screen, 75% more pixels
+167 Mhz CPU, 11% faster
+radeon 9700 gfx
+gigabit ethernet
+backlit keyboard
+firewire 800
+DDR2 memory
+dual layer superdrive
+digital audio
+0.5 hrs battery life
+1 lbs

17" vs 15.2", +$500 difference, +25% more
+1.8" screen, 27% more pixels
+40 gig HD (worth $200)
+1.3 lbs

Does getting the 7200rpm vs the 5400rpm cause any difference in battery usage? I'm thinking I'd rather have the 7200 but I'm not sure if I need it enough to drop down battery life.

I've owned/used 4 PowerBooks (2 15's and 2 17's). My first PowerBook was a 15" TI from a place I worked at. Then I decided to by a 15" AL and I loved that one. Once I went to my first 17 I was hooked. And now that I went to the latest 17 with higher res, I love it.

I almost thought about buying a 15" but first the Apple store only had 17's and I knew having 1680 x 1050 resolution would be worth the extra money.

Yea, i sold my v1 1.67 powerbook last night for 1,880, edu pricing for the new powerbook was 1,888 :)

$8 for a new powerbook pretty much. lol

nah, just standard stock model. I plan on getting a 250gb External firewire drive + ordering RAM from crucial, and a wireless kybd and mouse this weekend, hopefully alongside a new vPod if the store has them instock.

My First Powerbook since G3 Pismo

How much of a difference will it make if I order the 17" with 2gb ram rather than the 1gb ram that I am intending to order it with. I was planning in putting in the 1 gb and leaving the other slot open for a future upgrade but am contempleting just going for it all at once. I do mainly photoshop with some big files.
Thanks!

:( BLEEP *****$#@** since there was no UPDATE to the 12 BP, I’m going to KEEP my money and order some Chinese FOOD. I might also play with my Broken NANO. GOT to love APPLE QUALITY!!

Every time there was a PB rumour on a site PEOPLE went CRazY! How many times have people been disappointed!!! THIS is MY last TIME, I hate my NANO and IBM/Jobs. The 12 BP could have been improved in so many other ways then just the processor. Well enjoy your half ass discounts I’m going to get some food.

"BUMP" - sorry this isn't an answer but I just want to say that you got me wondering about this now, too! I hope someone comes along and answers this for us...

Just purchased new PB 17"

Went down to the Palo Alto Apple Store this evening and purchased a new 17" PowerBook to replace my aging PowerBook Titanium 800MHz. The screen is amazing.
Just FYI, it comes with MacOS X 10.4.2 Build 8E45 (later build than the one that comes with new macMinis), iTunes 4.9, and without the last 2 Security Updates applied (2005-007, 2005-008)
Hard drive was formatted on September 22nd.
Really wish it had shipped with 10.4.3 since it's supposed to fix all my problems... :)

You'd be disappointed then because it ain't gonna happen.

The only possible Yonah line-up will be consumer--MacMini and iBook. Steve will wait until Merom for the PB--a portable machine the developers can work on and with professional apps.

My only debate is whether to buy if an iBook with a Yonah chip comes out. I'd rather wait for Merom, but I could use a portable right now and I am not going to switch my software twice (from PC x86 to Mac PPC to Mac x86).

I mean 1.5-1.67GHz is gonna look very weak in 6 months time compared to what intel will have out in the PC world.

It looks weak now! The Dell XPS (~PB) starts at 2.0 GHz and goes up to 2.26 GHz with 2.13 in the middle. Mac fans are in for a (good) speed shock when [Edit: Mac]Intel notebooks arrive.

If you're right, how is Apple going to go a year, with the current Powerbook offering? Its already a year old, yes, it was updated today, but not really. Only extra features.

the last months i was really pi..d about apple and the powerbook.
too slow. too expensive.
i looked for an alternative.
asus, vaio, thinkpad...
compared to the new powerbook they are all more expensive if you like to have the same features.
they only have faster cpu´s, that´s it.
i´ll buy again a powerbook, the 15' is my choice.

Obsolete? You ain't seen nothing yet. Wait until the Yonah people have their PBs for a few months and then Merom comes out! That will be the true definition of obsolete.

And Apple can do all they want with transfering resources to Mactel PBs BUT without Intel chips they've got nothing. Intel is currently having serious issues with Yohah in terms of excess heat and energy consumption. Folks, this may be a longer wait than you think. And Apple isn't exactly Intel's biggest customer. Who do you think is going to get satisfied first...Apple or Dell?

I haven't heard about the issues with Yonah. Could you point me to a source or two, please?

I'm inclined to agree with you, however this latest update has made me question that a bit. With no processor upgrades (i.e. no 7448) this almost makes me think the Intel PowerBooks are coming sooner rather than later, and I'm not sure if Apple could sustain this line the way it is until Merom comes out, as that will not be for some time. My thinking is that this is the last major change to the Pro lines before Intel (with the PowerMacs receiving marginal updates mid-2006) but if this is indeed the case, it's not much of an update to the PowerBooks if this has to tide people over until Merom Intel PowerBooks come out. Guess we'll see...

Hey John - could you speak more simply to this newbie who got less than 2 hours sleep last night and can barely concentrate? Why did you write that 1.5 GB wasn't good enough for multi-tasking (only good for "single app" work) but then at the end you wrote that you suggest getting only 1 GB total RAM - and that it's what you plan on doing with your new one? What am I not understanding correctly? I REALLY want to be able to multi-task with ease (speed), like you mentioned. I'm buying the new 15," and SO FAR (unless someone convinces me to do otherwise) the upgrades I've been convinced to get for my purposes of wanting lots of speed and extra storage, will be:

1) Adding 1 GB memory using non-apple brand for around $150.00, resulting in 1.5 GB (this was explained to me by the "Genious" helper at my local Mac store - who said he'd order it for me and put it in for me - but I had to leave before completey understanding how this is a better deal than going with Apple's $180.00 student offer for 1 GB plus space for future 1 GB...I think...kind of confusing. Can anyone explain this? The guy thought it would be smarter).

2)upgrading from standard 80 GB HD to 100 GB, and from 5400 rpm to 7200. Student price of $180.00

Total will cost about $2,130.00.

The guy also suggested I get Apple's back-up utility (.Mac?) for $69.95 when I told him how many digital pics I have and how I haven't been very good about backing them up. Any imput on this deal?

Thanks John and everyone, for putting up with all my newbie obsessive questions!
