Woa woa woa! A few things:
1. Calling the ATI 9600 "barely usable" is waaaay off base. No they're not the NEWEST thing on the block, but they are still very good graphics cards.

2. Where are you getting you RAM prices? With a tiny bit of research you can get good name brand (PNI, Kingston, etc) PC3200 1GB modules for about $120 a piece, and 512MB modules for about $59 a piece. So, 2 512MB modules would be about $120 more.

I agree about the 9600, but RAM prices for the G5 are substantially higher than $120/GB. The G5 cannot use the cheaper sticks. Kingston's current quote is US$343 for a GB stick.

ATTENTION 2.5 buyers!

I just tried to cancel my order because they say July estimated shipping and then when you check order status it says on or before august 2nd. So i complained and told them to get their info straight. Do it as well and get $75 off! they cut the price by $75 so I decided to stick it out.

Just letting you all know that if you call and bitch to cancel they will offer something to keep your order live. Now all i need to do is cross my fingers and hope to get a sooner delivery date!

You got to be kidding, they have the number 1 gaming sytems. simply put they are awesome.

Their cases are butt-ugly and they are overpriced. Falcon Northwest is the best. But both of them pale in comparison to actually building your own in price and selection.

Months is right. Go buy the POS, enjoy the misery of Winblows and leave this forum.

Go on, put your money where your mouth is - go order it RIGHT NOW.

What's stopping you?

Fear?

Huh? If you say a 50% increase in a year, and you deliver 25%, that by definition is underdelivering.
Technological Progress Is Unpredictable. Apple underestimated unexpected development challenges. This is not unusual but rather the rule. If you haven't learned this by now, you haven't lived long enough or gotten a realistic education. Get used to it or you will always be disappointed by deadlines not met and predictions over optimistically estimated. I think 25% speed increase, better graphics cards and 200% DVD burning speed is not bad for a year. It's good enough for me to not wait any longer to get my first G5.

Apple doesn't seem to give a flip about bringing new technologies to anything but the high end big money Powermac. Everything else is just crippled one or two year old hand-me-down technology. The only one that ever gets updated is the the $3k+ model. Its not really a surprise, thats how they have always done things since Steve came back. All they need is one computer that can be as fast as the PC world and they are happy, it doesn't matter how expensive it is or how few people will buy it. I sure wouldn't mind buying new Mac's every 2 years if they were cheap, but when the only way you can get brand new technology from Apple (not one year old hand-me-downs) is by spending over $3,000, they can forget about making lots of money off people upgrading.
I don't know what it is, maybe its the long wait, but this speed bump pisses me off than other let downs Apple has given us these past two years. Now I have to wait till next year to get a darn G5.

Is this a gaming discussion? Is this what the mac community has come down to lol.I have a pc with a nvidia fx 5200 and that card is not bad. Get a voodoo or something is you want speed.wait till next year the video cards will be around 700 dollars and will be considerd low end 6 months later. :D

18004memory.com is $225/1GB stick in a $450 kit. There is no way you can buy 1 GB sticks for $120 from anyone anywhere.

400 MHz DDR PC3200 costs at least $180 a GB stick according to pricewatch.com.

I wanted to see more too. I think the 2.5 is nice but not worth the price. If it had a 250 HD/ 1gig of ram/ and the top of the line G-card, it would be worth it.

Weeee, this is exactly what I did ! :)

So did I.

Haters can whine about the DP 1.8, but it's a really good deal with edu discount.

Will I need more than 8GB of ram? Unlikely.

Will I need PCI-X cards? Don't think so.

If I need more disk space, I'll buy a disk when I need it.

It's not the machine for everyone, but it's a great machine for me.

What's childish is spending a year bashing Apple products, telling everyone how much you hate them and then doing nothing about it. It's aggravating. Obviously he has no real "immenent" need for a machine - so just say so, or go buy what you need and move on.

He has every right to bitch and moan here, I have every right to bitch and moan about his bitching and moaning, but will leave it at that so we can go back to bitching and moaning about this update. :p

While i'm in a ranting mood. How about the price in Australia!?! What's going on with that. There's a $1,000 mark up AFTER the currency exchange on a RETAIL price! This is a joke. Surely I can get one from the states to Australia for less than $1,000. And I'm sure Apple australia can get them wholesale and in bulk, why the massive mark up?

If this was Slashdot, the obligatory reply would be "you're new around here, aren't you?". Apple Australia is notorious for inflating the currency-adjusted price of Apple hardware. Recently they have been getting better (the recent PowerBook refresh also brought quite significant price cuts which brought Aussie PowerBook prices more into line with the US), but obviously there are still some segments of their offerings which are poor value compared to US pricing...like the PowerMacs.

Believe it or not, prior to the recent PowerBook price cut, it was the same price or a few hundred dollars cheaper to fly from Sydney to Honolulu and buy a 17" PowerBook there, than to buy one locally.

I don't actually have an explanation for the pricing disparity, it's just the way it is, unfortunately.

The 1.8 dualie is an awesome deal - I will be buying one when they are in supply enough to pick one up off the shelf at the Clarendon store.

$1799.00 with the edu discount. I had no plans on upgrading, but I can probably get a grand or so for my G4...and this machine rocks.

Guys & Gals please dont get upset, ill still own Macs and my wife gets the 1.47 Quicksilver, but I have wanted a Powerful Game Machine for a long time. These updates are stale except the top end shipping in August? Fx5200s and 256 ram standard I dont know if if i should laugh or cry. Secret- wife owes me for buying her daughter a car so i have been waiting ever so patiently to see what happens, this kind of sucks and with powermacs where they are we all know Imac will be crippled down to who knows what. So i have most likely waited for nothing. By the way I have used Macs for over 10 Years and own 3 at the moment. Anyways Doom3,Far Cry and Halflife2 will be calling me soon and thats the only reason i need some juice. My old 333 can email and surf so its about the games! With the porting, and delays for Mac software i probably should have gotten a pc sooner.

Just a little OT

Now that the new G5's have come out what would I get for a dual 450 with 1.12 gigs of ram, pci scsi card, and 330 gigs of hd? Curious as I am looking to upgrade my slowest machine? Could also leave FCP 3.0/DVD 2.0/PS 6/AE prod 5.0 on it. thanks

LOL. I'm upgrading from a Rev A Beige frankenmac (new proc, video card, RAM, HD, etc.) that I've had for seven years this fall. Should be just a little different.

Agreed. The new dual 1.8GHz machine is only AU $100 more expensive (I think) that the single 1.6GHz machine was when it was released (and when I bought one). As you say...PCI-X cards made no difference to me, and I would be willing to take a chance and say that 95% of PowerMac G5 owners will never actually insert a PCI-X card in the working lifetimes of their systems. How many people are running Fibre Channel disk arrays or something similar that require a PCI-X card versus a regular 32-bit or 64-bit PCI card? The 8 versus 4 RAM slots is a little different, as it can make the first RAM upgrade a little easier to plan. With only 4 slots you have to buy the largest sticks you can afford, as after the first upgrade you are now out of slots, unless you throw away the sticks the system came with.

Anyway...I expect to see the same moaning and whining from people about the new entry level 1.8GHz system as we saw against the 1.6GHz system a year ago. The 1.6GHz machine was the right one for me about this time last year, and right now I'm sure the dual 1.8GHz system will be perfect for many. Considering that in the space of a year for the roughly the same price you can now get TWO 1.8GHz CPUs instead of a single 1.6GHz CPU, as well as an 8x Superdrive, that isn't too bad at all.

All i can say is man, I'm glad I got my Dual 1.8 a few months ago when $1999 (academic price, now $1799) got me 512 RAM (so I have 2.5, instead of 2.25, not a big deal i guess), 160gb HD insead of 80 (reasonable difference), and basically just sacrifice 8x dvd instead of my 4x -- not to mention I've had use of it for a few months and a few big projects in the mean time.... Disappointing show... and where are fancy new (and cheaper) displays?
