Wow, I didn't think they would get rid of the SuperDrive in it! I personally haven't used it on my MBP, but it still scares some. My step-mom chose a MBP over an Air because of it, even though she has yet to use the optical drive and probably won't ever. It'll
take a while for people to get used to computers without them I guess.

Quote from the Mac Mini's product page:

"Mac mini is designed without an optical disc drive. Because these days, you don’t need one. It’s easier than ever to download music and films from the iTunes Store. And you can download apps from the Mac App Store with a click."

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL... Yeah, right Apple.

Epic. Fail.

Heh, if I had a dollar every time someone used the phrase "Epic Fail" to Apple on MacRumors, my bank account would be Too Big To Fail.

Funny, one epic failure after another from Apple keeps leading to record sales.

1)It's late 2011 and Apple is still (many years after my 2007 Mac Mini model) making 2GB desktop machines and charging $600.

2)Terrible 5400RPM drives STILL.

3)But I do like the ability to open it with ease to add memory.

4)No cd/dvd drive?!?!?!?! So how am I supposed to rip my cds I buy every few weeks? I'm sure there is some $250 Apple USB-based accessory.

It's 2011!!! I think Apple should pony an extra $10 and put 4GB of RAM in the Mini base model, not 2GB - that's is ridiculous and a bit of a insult to buyers that that much for computer

So I'm guessing the new 27" ACD with TB won't work with older Mac's that have the Mini DisplayPort?

I'm guessing you're correct. All the other connectors built into this new display would be useless without Thunderwear that's fun to wear.

This should mean if I buy a Thunderbolt display I should be able to daisy-chain my existing external display onto the end right?
Cant wait to get a new Macbook Pro next year and have a proper setup.

And so it begins. The death of the optical drive.

Actually I'm happy to see the optical drive go, but SSD should have being standard.

Happy to see it go? Why? Did it insult you at some point or date your sister?

No drive is idiotic. You can't rip your CDs to it and use it as a music server. You can't run Windows 7 Media Center on it. It doesn't play DVDs.

Unless you pay another $70 and have another box sat on top of it. Which defeats it's compact design.

It hasn't been reduced in price, just flexibility.

The new Mac Mini's are very cool. It's a shame they couldn't get the AMD card and the Quad-Core into the high end model...too much heat I guess.

Either way it's a great update. I'll likely get the Server with 256SSD/750HDD model because the purpose if for media, FCP-X and such. I think the Quad Core chip, even though it has the HD3000 will serve me better than the Dual-Core i7 + AMD card.

And so it begins. The death of the optical drive.

...in Apple land. Everyone else will have cd/dvd drives for another decade or more. CDs and DVDs are still sold abundantly in stores across the globe as well as people's existing collections.

Also, this signify's that Blu-Ray is definitely never coming...can't wait to see the rumored redesigned Mac Pro without an optical drive...that should generate some discussion;)

On the other hand, this gets my hopes up a great deal for the Macbook Pro's next year. The rumored redesign should finally ditch the optical drive. I can't wait to see them.

I wonder if the iMac next year will get rid of the optical also...interesting. They maybe could finally add a desktop graphics card with the extra space.

I really dont care personally if they remove the optical drive, and if people really want to use CDs/DVDs so much they can buy an external drive. Maybe it was a bit too soon to remove it from a desktop computer, but I really dont see what people mean when they say Apple shouldnt remove the drive from the next Macbook Pro design. I dont want to be carrying around something I dont need all the time, especially as it takes up so much space. The only time I may ever use a CD is at home and I have an external CD/DVD drive for then /waiting-for-Lion-downloand-to-finish rant

Oh well. Looks like the idea of replacing my wife's mini with new one without her knowing just went up in smoke.

Dearie me! Quad core i7 but no discrete chip for the server model; new discrete chip but only 256mb; no optical drive at all in a computer which will be quite possibly be used as a desktop replacement; only 2g of memory in base model......:(

It is absolutely insane that this doesn't have any optical drive! I would have considered getting a mini if it had a drive.

Why do you need an optical drive? Answer: you don't.

And if you do, the Mini is not targeted at you.

Regarding memory for the Mini according to Apples website...

Configurable to 4GB or 8GB, only at the Apple Online Store.
http://www.apple.com/macmini/specs.html

I hope that is not true. The base model with only 2Gb will cost an extra $300 (50% of the price of the Mini) to upgrade to 8GB ram. What a gip

The Apple website shows you can easily update the memory with 1333MHz SODIMMS of your own choice.

Anyone buying the base model should leave it at 2GB and get third party memory.

Apple leads the way. The future is the cloud...

Dual Core i5, with BTO upgrade to Dual Core i7?

And a model with AMD Radeon HD 6630M* graphics processor with 256MB of GDDR5 memory?!

GOOD-BYE OPTICAL DRIVE**!

* a quick search tells me it's roughly about twice the power of the previous nVidia 320m, which is an incredible upgrade IMHO. Not sure why they didn't go with 512MB instead, but at least it's a very good upgrade.

** if you need one, get the Macbook Air one, it works just fine. Already worked on the previous Mac mini too (the unibody with nVidia 320m).

P.S.: Thank you Apple for that one Mac mini model with a non-intel GPU. You could have stuck with one motherboard model with the intel GPU, but you listened to your users.

P.S.2: those wishing for a quad-core i7 on top of the Radeon GPU... I suppose that combo generated too much heat, so it's not an option. You can still get a dual-core i7 instead of a dual-core i5 when you buy online, though.
