Good move for Apple. I have never seen an XServe, nor do I know ANYONE who has ever bought one. That could not have been a money maker for them.

So your personal experience represents the entire industry ?

I've never seen a Cray CX1 nor do I know ANYONE who has ever bought one. Yet I don't doubt they have customers since they've been in business for so long.

I guess that rack mount servers never really sold well for Apple.

But for those companies that used them, this is a real PITA. Tower cases just never fit nicely into the server room.

The last figures I've seen were about ten thousand a year. In comparison, HP sold about 100,000 the same year. This is from a MacWorld magazine article, I don't know when, maybe 3 years ago.

There are third party rack mount kits for Mac Pro. You do lose hot-swap and the slim form factor, among other things mentioned by other people.

You guys seriously have to flood Apple with your complaints about the “hot swappable” SATAs and PSUs. It’s a huge deal for an enterprise class server that Mac Pro is NOT!

Hehe, not surprised. It's a crappy fill-in option that likely will not sell well, but it lets Apple feel like they're still providing for that side of the business without manufacturing a new product. It's probably a good thing, I don't see how Xserve could have competed with other popular 1U rackmounts, so they are refocusing their server business to an area where they can get away with repurposing desktop hardware (Mini and now Pro), the home enthusiast or small business. It will be interesting to see how OSX Server and their hardware lineup for it will change with Lion and the Mac App Store ideology.

Could you even lay a Mac Pro on a shelf in a server rack if you really wanted it in one? I'm not familiar with the dimensions.

its obvious that a server needs a low end GAMING video card instead of a workstation card

WTH is this? the specs will not compete with anything server related.

oh BTW, its "prettiness" and "shiny ooo factor" dont mean **** to what companies need for server equipment

Perhaps one reason for Apple's abandonment of the XServe is support. We have one to run our media labs at our college. Built into our contract were three training session by Apple for one of our IT staff. The guy from Apple wasn't really from Apple at all; he was a subcontractor and didn't seem to have much training ability. He knew some of the hardware and software for the server, but after three sessions our IT guy was still confused as to exactly how everything worked. (I was there for the sessions; the trainer really was incomprehensible.)

The whole first year we had the server, it would crash about three times a week. Apple was clueless as to the fix. We finally upgraded the server to Snow Leopard, and that seems to have fixed the problem. But perhaps servers were just one more headache that Apple didn't want to deal with.

Uh ? A server needs a low end video card at best. GP-GPU hasn't taken off much in the enterprise sector to warrant use of power guzzling GPUs. In fact, most of our HP servers just use the on board Intel graphics, not that we really need them with ssh or the serial console.

are those the new ones? i thought the specs for PRoliant g7's said ATI ES 1000 with 32MB RAM

We have G5s and G6s along with RX and BL series. But you're right, they did switch to ATI graphics in some servers :

"00:03.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc ES1000 (rev 02)"

Not that that thing is a big "workstation" class GPU anyway. FireGL or Quadro this ain't.

i guess i worded the post bad, the MacPro is both a workstation and a server, which one of those needs a low end gaming video card?

gaming video cards have cheaper silicon and cheaper parts,
workstation cards have high quality components, higher spec parts, (you can see the diffrence between the geforce cards and the quadro cards, quadro cards have better heat sinks and heat pipes)

Apple will just sell a ready-to-go VM appliance for VMware. They can't leave Mac admins out to dry...or can they?

I feel really bad for anyone who recently got their ACSA.

We've installed hundreds of Xserve's. The Mac Pro Server is NOT a suitable replacement for any of our applications. I can show you pictures of rows of 40U racks filled top to bottom with Xserve's.

For those who think Xserve's aren't popular, obviously never set foot into a into a broadcast or post facilty. Try editing uncompressed 1080p HD video on the cloud!

I don't know anything about servers. Are these options just as good or better than the xserve was? Or are people much less likely to get Apple servers now?

My question is what is Apple going to do in their new server farm? I find it hard to believe they will fill it with Mac Mini/Pro Servers.

Secretly I am hoping they are discontinuing xServe - and then in January are going to announce something awesome to actually replace it. Deep down I know this is just a delusion.

This is going to be an issue for the university that i work for. We have a PC side and Mac side for deployment services and backup and such. We have 8 xServes mounted in the server room. This is going to be a large issue in the future. Like others have said, you can't mount a mac pro on a rack. lol
