For which you need another Mac, and the knowledge of how to do it. I do have two Macs but not the knowledge. One thing I did notice when one of them freaked out is that I could still access it from the other via file sharing, but only the file system and not with screen sharing. They must fix this. It's beyond annoying, it's embarrassing.

Just a free SSH client on for instance your iPhone will do. Then to kill distnoted, enter:
$ sudo killall -SEGV distnoted
$ exit

What computer do you have? Does it have a SSD? Old HDDs run very poorly with the newer OSes.
Currently, running Both El Capitan and macOS Sierra on external hard drives but the computer I am using is a late 2012 27 inch iMac, 3.4GHZ/i7 with 32GB of Ram/ 1TB Fusion drive.

I upgrade and man I feel so mad...
This update keeps my MBP all hot as hell..!!!
I hope they fix this...:(
Next update...MacOS Sierra I''l wait for a month to see...

Has Apple updated the Intel Graphics Drivers? OS X 10.11.5 brought trouble regarding my external display, which began to have a problem with flickering.

What are you doing to use up 100GB in one month? Wholly molly!
20 hours of HD streaming will rack up 100 gigabytes.

Well see we have to download this version, test it, make sure it doesn't break or breaks other things in the OS so that we can safely deploy it on enterprise, schools etc, so that idiots like yourself can use it without throwing a tantrum fit as to why your computer doesnt work after you patched.

Thanks, I will try to keep that in mind. I presume I will also need to enter my user name and password.

Going to have to look into this myself. 10.11.6 still randomly locks up on me and I have to do a hard reset. Doesn't help right in the middle of working on something. Tried to run activity monitor but at that state it doesn't report much and then eventually stops working too. Bummer...was really hoping my random lockups would be fixed in this release. I think I started noticing this in .5.

I have a late 2012 27" iMac with 24 gigs of memory and fusion drive.

Well that's bad news. I keep Activity Monitor running in my Dock. If I see the processors saturating I bring that window in front to see what is going haywire. So far I have not been quick enough to also kill the process.

Big bummer. I was very excited with El Capitan because it felt like we were repeating snow leopard and was getting more stability over "features". All was fine until .4 or .5 for me. Usually happens when I am doing a lot of things or have a lot of windows opened. It really sucks when I am in the middle of programming in Win 7 in vmware.

All I noticed from activity monitor (even though details didn't show up for individual processes) under CPU my System use was at like 2% while User was at 98%. No individual % were showing for the processes but I did note that kernel task was at the top of the list and all my menu bar items like dropbox, typinator, crash plan, etc. were all red and saying not responding. I had clicked on the % CPU heading but nothing changed so kernel task could of been at the top because of CPU Time.

Not that it helps much, but I would sort by %CPU. I think that is a better indicator of what is going on right at that moment than CPU Time, which I believe is cumulative. If you have it set that way as the default it will I think give you a better chance of seeing where the problem comes from, even if you can't do much about it.

… Tried to run activity monitor but at that state it doesn't report much and then eventually stops working …

Instead, use the key chord for sysdiagnose. In the end result (within the archive) there's much technical information, some of which might help to understand the cause(s) of a problem.

It seemed to fix most of my issues with my mac pro 2013. Hope it resolved the issues within FCPX.

Totally agree with you. I noticed that Activity Monitor doesn't have a default sort. Whatever I sorted last with before quitting is what it opens with. Also I did mention I tried to click on CPU% but nothing changed.

I assume you mean this Cmd+Opt+Ctrl+Shift+Period

The word "chord" threw me for a quick loop as I don't use that term. I always say combo. Thanks for that advice...I didn't know or had forgotten about it. I will try it next time. Hopefully it will do something.

If it opens the way you left it last time that kinda is the default. Anyway I was suggesting keeping it running full time. That's what I do. I just had a pinwheel in Safari, and was quick enough to the monitor to see that it was unresponsive, killed that task pronto, and dodged the bullet.

You'd understand if you were afflicted with the "distnoted" process bug, as many have been with El Cap. On both of our brand new iMacs, this process randomly freaks out and sucks up all of the processor cycles. It happens routinely and can usually only be recovered with a hard restart. I have never seen a more serious bug with any version of OS X, including the very early ones. Some said the problem went away when they installed a Sierra beta so I am hoping it has been tracked down and fixed and rolled into this update.

I think i have this. Have 10.11.6 helped to this problem for anybody?

Has Air Drop been fixed? That broke on my MBPR two updates ago. Two hours on the phone with senior Apple tech hasn't solved it yet.

Yep, it's the word used by Apple in its manual page for the tool.

Cmd+Opt+Ctrl+Shift+Period is as good as Control-Option-Command-Shift-Period … and if ever you're desperate and can't remember the chord, there is (or was, years ago) a messy approach: without using your fingers, use the palms of your hands – one palm each side of the space bar and press as many keys as possible. A last resort, but entertaining :)

Any more reports on whether this update is worth a damn? Seems like the post just kind of petered out. I'm holding off on upgrading since a few early adopters reported problems, but I know that's not always indicative of the the overall acuity of the upgrade.

Noted about the use of the word chord.

Just came back to my computer after sitting overnight. Outlook was unresponsive. Quickly went to activity monitor and noted 98% cpu usage for user. CPU% for processes were blank. Found distnoted and was able to end the process for my user. Computer immediately sprang back to life. All I can say is this REALLY sucks and it disappoints me that Apple seems to be going in the opposite direction with their OSs. Above anything else I want stability first. It used to be that way.

I'm wondering if there is really an issue with disnoted or is it because of older machine or ??? Seems big enough for Apple to address or is it going to be addressed with Sierra. I don't want beta software for a solution though.

Sure it is. Fixes some things and doesn't on others, ahem...I'm looking at you distnoted. I always try to be current on OS updates. I can say what always seems to be said on these forums when Apple has an OS upgrade. "Safari seems snappier." ;-)

I am wondering now whether the berserk disnoted process is the main issue or a function of something else. I actually haven't seen it for awhile but yesterday I did see "Safari Web Content (not responding)" in Activity Monitor. I quit Safari and restarted it and the problem is gone, for now. I have also recently seen Safari itself become unresponsive and was able to kill it Activity Monitor before it took down the entire system.

Installed the El Cap update today.
