One shouldn't put anything past apple these days. Why not make any non apple ssd perform like crap via flipping an os wide switch? Users should know better than to upgrade their computers with much cheaper, much better ssds instead of paying the apple tax.

I don't know why this got downvoted. It is the absolute truth. Just check the benchmarks of the overpriced crap SSDs Apple puts in their Macbook Airs (and other Macs), and compare them to the others.

I'm sorry, but the SSDs Apple puts in their machines is pure CRAP.

Installed it on my machines yesterday.

Can't say much about Lion, hope this "do not reopen windows" will indeed finally work.

About Snow Leopard on the other hand: I experienced quite a slowdown. After some working hours, the kernel task had gone from the normal 2 up to 20% and the overall memory usage looked impressively high. After a restart, it was ok again. Now, if this has something to do with the upgade or is just a coincidence and is not repeatable remains to be shown.

But please tell me, what is it with the RAM shown in Activity Monitor? It now shows the same strange numbers as in Lion. If I accumulate all the physical memory of all my processes, I never get the total amount of RAM used as it is shown. And quite regularily, I get EB (ExaBytes) for some applications. Has anyone else experienced that? Bug report?

I discovered, the virtual memory is now secure in SL (see system preferences). Has this been here before? Is this the source of the issues maybe?

Awwww yeaaaah. Fine-grained volume control is back!! Or did I just miss it in 10.7.3 ?!

Performance is not everything.

I've seen plenty of OCZ/Crucial SSDs die after a few months, yet haven't heard people complaining about apple SSDs failing en masse.

Who cares how fast your SSD is if it doesn't work?

Broken quicktime pro 7.6.3 ability to loop & loop back and forth.
Both are now greyed out.

This update is a godsend...

This patch improved my computer performance by 17%!

Wow - this update fixed a LOT of things I hated about Lion. Performance is at least 20% faster on my 2008 MBP. Safari doesn't suck anymore. The settings NOT to reopen all windows on restart now actually work.

While I don't believe in dumbing down OS X to make it like iOS, this update returns OS X 10.7 to a useful, usable state.

Maybe Apple finally spent some of their billions on quality control staff?

I backed up everything and did a clean install - now it's like I have a new computer. There was a very nasty permissions bug in all Lion versions prior to 10.7.4 which was causing me no end of problems, but now I have the performance of Snow Leopard with the features of Lion.

Do a clean install of this version of 10.7 - it is worth the time. I did the clean install because my permissions were so jacked up - I can't believe its the same OS!

(If you need legacy support, see this post - works GREAT!)

----------

I honestly have never seen that. Never, not once. I wonder if it might be an extension or something causing it

The permissions bug was making all kinds of crazy ****** happen. Do a clean install (re-download Lion installer from Mac App Store) and you'll be very pleased with the result.

Just updated my MBP (combo update) and the difference is awesome.

Much snappier.

Upgraded my Mini as well running lion server, and my screen sharing actually seems to update properly now too.

They've finally optimised lion properly it would appear, in terms of snappiness if feels almost like mountain lion!

edit:
Im wondering how much of the Lion performance issues/fixes were due to improvements in CLANG / LLVM, etc since release.

Reactivated every disabled Mail account

Did anyone experience this? I had a bunch of email accounts disabled and the upgrade turned them all back on.

Plus, it seems to have changed my power saver settings too.

What year is your MBP? I'm tempted to give my early 2011 13" MBP another go with Lion? Got it when it first came out but it felt slower at startup and opening apps so I went straight back to SL.

Frankly, I've had no end of slow-ups, beach-balling, etc. sometimes when just browsing since updating to 7.3. This despite having a new Mac Mini with i5, 2.5 GHz & 4GB RAM.

In case anyone wonders, yes, I've previously done restarts just to see if it'd help clear up the problem. It didn't! Was disappointed to say the least when compared to the performance of my, supposedly slower, previous iMac with Snow Leopard, which seemed much more stable.

Must say that after nearly an hour since updating to Lion 7.4, everything seems a lot faster & smoother. Even the Mini seems cooler & quieter on the whole when performing the same tasks.

Overall, so far at least, I'm pleased with 7.4, but will report back if any of the previous issues arise again. :)

i just upgraded to 10.7.4 by using the COMBO UPDATE to stay sure.....but in the Finder version info I still find 10.7.3 ? Is it right ?

thx in advance

It could be, as the Finder version is unrelated to the OS X version.

Seems like 10.7.4 ruined the 3-finger drag thing on the older multitouch trackpads. I'll update it soon...

Saw the update in the dock, installed it, and now my computer seems....snappier. :p Don't know what it was in .3 that was slowing my iMac down but with .4 now in tow, all seems to be running great.

Think of it this way; Apple makes a terrific OS and software ecosystem. Apple also makes really great hardware. However their hard drive, SSD and memory upgrades are either trash and/or ridiculously overpriced.

Knowing that a great MacBook Pro, Mac Mini or Mac Pro can be had by ordering form Apple plus either OWC and/or Newegg. That's just the way it is.

Biggest fix I noticed is that my hot corners are working again...I dunno how they managed to break that in 10.7.3, but it's nice to have them back again.
