Will this erase all of my settings and files if i just run the image over my current installation? Or will it automatically just upgrade the OS?

Users are the new beta testers. With yearly releases, I think they just assume if you want fixes you'll just upgrade to whatever new OS version they have and get some new features, as well.

To me, Lion already doesn't feel nearly as stable as Snow Leopard did, and I expect that feeling to continue into Mountain Lion.

Please explain what is in bold. What is wrong with Lion.

This is Apple. Abandoning older models is their MO. I don't expect them to support any special features in hardware older than a year or two. Remember their requirements for Core Image at the time of its reveal? Or the speedups to FileVault in 10.7 only possible with newer hardware? Maybe they could make things work with older hardware, but it's a waste of their development time and does not help them sell new hardware.

Older models more than 2 years old will not be powerful enough to run it.

This is same problem Microsoft had with windows vista that need 2 GB RAM and most computers only had 1 GB RAM and some only 512 MB back in 2006.And the computers crashing and getting BSOD.

Complete bull.

Those older models include 8 core mac pros that can hold 32 gigs of ram. More powerful than the low end machines that are supported.

It's purely coming from the bean counters, they are hoping people will replace perfectly good machines just to get an OS update.

Yeah, my 2007 Mac Pro Quad 2,6Ghz, 8 Go RAM, C300 SSD, HD 4870 512 MB is not powerful enough to run Mountain Lion but a crap MBP of 2007 with a quarter of this is... Good Fanboy.
