Apple Releases OS X Yosemite Developer Preview 6

Apologies for asking this, but it's been a pain in the arse Googling this because it just comes up with 'unlock dark mode' posts, but;

Do we still have a Graphite mode in Yosemite? i.e. can I get rid of the traffic lights as I have for the last > decade?

yes

Answering my own question: Time Machine is still borked, stalling on "preparing backup." I hope this is rectified soon. We're several releases into the Developer Preview and this is a basic and longstanding function of the operating system.

Doesn't happen to me. I'm backup up wirelessly to a Synology Diskstation - no issues, since the beginning.

Yes it still has Graphite mode.

You mean this right:

Hating the direction they are taking icon design. The control panel of System 7 looks better than this crap.

I think Yosemite looks really beautiful. Especially the new icons are great, but of course people are different and will like different things..

Remember when the GM for Mavericks was released, and then re-released? I remember having to load GM2 over the top of GM1.

Anyway, looking forward to Yosemite, however this time i won't be as quick to jump onto it as I was with previous operating systems.

"The System Preferences menu has a new look with new icons.
The battery looks different.
The Dashboard in Yosemite is now translucent.
There are new icons."

Wow! I am just so excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A new look!
Jimmany!

Not.

I'm interested in real functionality, not cosmetics. They're as bad as the auto industry. Keep the basic machine the same. Do only functional improvements. Fix bugs. Stop the glimmer.

You assume that nothing has changed on the inside. These are really just the easiest differences to find. We can't see much of the inside, but there's no reason to believe they aren't changing code and fixing bugs as well.

Put another way, the people that squash bugs aren't messing about with Photoshopping icons and they definitely aren't getting paid to play Spider Solitaire...you know, unless they are compiling something. :p

I'm wondering if Apple has been force seeding updates to the public beta. I noticed a couple nights ago my iMac woke up and I saw an update progress bar come up and my iMac restarted when it was finished without any input from me. I also just noticed the new Yosemite wallpaper is available in my desktop pictures. Was this originally included in the public beta and now just made its way into the DP6 release?

I'd like an option for an all white or dark theme without the translucency. It doesn't bother me on iOS, but I don't like in on yosemite. I dig all the other UI updates though

Best designed interface ever.

OSX Yosemite is being refined with every DP and it is looking extremely good. There is so much care and detail going into this release. I am thrilled that Ive's controls all aspects of design, hardware and software. There are few companies in electronics that even comes close to what Apple does. Kudos to the people at Apple who work hard to bring products done with so much love.

^This UI certainly looks dated by today's standards, and by no means should it be resurrected per se, but it looks like it has a soul. It makes me happy to look at it. Same with the spherical iMac.

That's what is missing now, I think. Yosemite looks cool and sleek (mostly), but it evokes no feeling. It's really kind of bland. Cool, but bland. Like hyper-modern art, white cubes or whatever. I just don't get anything out of Jony Ive's kind of minimalist software design. (That doesn't mean I like overdone skeuomorphism, by the way.)

Some would say that's a good thing, but I never had problems doing real work on a Mac that still had some playful intrigue to it.

----------

why does Dashboard still exist?

I still use it for the Stickies and Calculator.

Notes is well and good, but I have a spatial mind, not a lists-and-search mind, so I rarely use it. I'd hate to lose Dashboard, although I'm sure it will go the way of Sherlock before long.

He gave us much more than this. The whole OS X & iOS UI. What you show here was one of his rare mistakes. The most of his work was brilliant and way ahead of its time. Just compare his work to current Windows, Android and now Mavericks design.

Well I could show a lot more. That was just one example. Design is subjective. I'm not a fan of design that attempts to recreate the physical. I prefer the more minimalist direction of today. Though I prefer iOS and Android over Windows Phone. I think WP is fugly.

If Apple keeps the fluorescent folder icons, I hope someone comes up with with a CandyBar replacement so I can install this in yosemite:
