Staying the hell away.

It's quite sad how sluggish Yosemite is on my i7 MBP with 16GB RAM and Samsung 840 Pro SSD. It's like Apple doesn't care about optimization anymore.

I'm running the PB (14A379b), and it's been stable. I had an issue with Ableton Live, but it seems to have worked itself out.

However, I can't seem to get Continuity working. The main reason I upgraded to the PB, and my phone to the 8.1 beta is so I can make/receive calls on my 13-inch, Mid 2010 MBP.

If I go to Preferences -> General, I have no option to enable Handoff. If I go into Contacts, there's no iPhone icon. Is my laptop just not capable? I have to say that I believe Apple's not communicating very well on this.

You can assume Apple will be more clear about features when Yosemite is released to the public. Your laptop is too old for Handoff to work.

We have it on two machines here and it's glorious. My daily driver is a 2012 Retina MBP, 16GB and 500GB SSD, so it's reasonably close to the configuration you describe. And with the GM it is more stable than it's ever been, and runs cooler.

The GM is a vast improvement from the previous beta. You can see it in Spaces transitions-- lots has happened under the hood.

I thought it was too old for handoff of apps and things, but not for phone calls/SMS?

I was under the impression that the phone stuff was over WiFi, not Bluetooth.

It uses bluetooth too, and requires bluetooth LE.

Well, this is why I wish Apple would make these things clearer somehow. Now I've got beta software all over the place to achieve something that's impossible.

Thank you for clarifying for me, I really appreciate it.

No wrong, it only uses wifi and can be used with devices that don't have bluetooth LTE.

Sorry, no, it requires Bluetooth. Here is an in-depth explanation:
http://arstechnica.com/apple/2014/0...ech-tying-ios-8-and-os-x-yosemite-together/2/
...any devices you want to use with Handoff need to be signed in to iCloud with the same Apple ID, which also happens to pair them via Bluetooth... Once you've signed in to the same iCloud account, our old friend Bluetooth 4.0 is responsible for keeping each of your devices informed about what the others are doing.

I've tried the GM and it's super sluggish, ruined my battery life, and freezes all the time. Feels like a 1995 computer trying to run Windows Vista. It's ridiculous.

Mavericks is better anyway. It's not like I can use the continuity features anyway.

The OP is aware that his device is too old for handoff, it is continuity (phone calls and SMS) that he/she wishes to get working which only requires wifi.

Heh, well, I'm certainly glad that we cleared all that up. The verdict is that it may or may not work, and that for some people it's available in the GM, and for some others it's not.

From that Ars article:

Apple’s developer documentation doesn’t go into much depth about passing voice calls through your iPhone to your Mac or iPad, but the preview site indicates that both devices will need to be on the same Wi-Fi network (having a Mac hooked to wired Ethernet will also probably work, but it's safe to assume that more homes are wireless these days). Unlike Handoff, the feature doesn’t appear to use Bluetooth at all, and unlike AirDrop, it doesn’t require your device to support peer-to-peer Wi-Fi connections. Unlike so many of the other Continuity features, this one looks like it should work fine even if you’re using an iPhone 4S with an iMac or MacBook Pro from 2007.

I'm running the GM on a 2010 2.4 C2D with 8GB, and I didn't notice any speed differences at all. I can't really speak to battery life, as I replaced the fan myself a couple of years ago and it just runs all the time.

[EDIT] I've gotten Text Message Forwarding and voice calls working. I followed this guide for the SMS stuff:

http://www.digitaltrends.com/comput...ages-make-phone-calls-with-mac-os-x-yosemite/

I'm not sure if that's what worked for phone call setup (it's adding/allowing your phone number to your iCloud account), but now I have audio call options in my Contact folder on the 2010 MBP, and I just made a call. The latency's pretty bad, but it worked.
