I didn't read through this thread but:

Looks like the MBP did get a case redesign!!!!! Well, not quite...
however.................

The superdrive is in a different location (the slot). It is higher, more near the top of the palm rest. I assume it's 'cause it looks centered now with the lid closed. Check out the pictures on the www.apple.com/macbookpro site.

A lot of complaints about the exclusion of the remote which is now $19, which I agree is kind of ridiculous if you're spending two grand or more on these things, however, they are not charging anymore for the Penryn upgrades or bumps in space for the HD. This is after all, a refresh.

I just bought the 2.4 ghz MBP 13 days ago. I have one day to decide if I should take it back and get the 2.5 $2499 upgraded one. Problem is, I have to pay the restocking fee -- $250.

Is it worth it?

I was told by Apple that if a price drop occurs within 30 days of purchasing, you can be refunded the difference. I realize the standard config price is the same, but since your machine's price/value dropped a little, maybe getting some money back is an option.

i cant believe half the post so far are complaints...

but thank god its here so we can stop hearing about it, at least for now..

Oh, I can believe it.

Even though they get nearly everything they wanted in the new boxes, they can find a laundry list of things to whine about.

Who really thought their whining was justified? It's just what they do.

Oh ... and BTW ... all of these "nothing-to-shout-about" nice updates at the same old price. Seems like a pretty good thing to most sensible people.

maybe - but when cost isn't an issue and you need more power it's a negligible update.

MacBook got the best deal with regard to updates today, something echoed elsewhere in this forum.

Does anybody know when they will update the mbp so it has bluray and 1680x1050 on the 15" model?

I know, I know, I just wanted to be the first! :D
Now that the second theater of the HD format wars are about to start, don't expect to see Blu-Ray anytime soon on an Apple Laptop or consumer machine.

The people in the know are saying that a company in Redmond was trying to get Sony to sink as much money in the Blu-Ray/HD-DVD war so that they and other companies (one in Santa Cruz) can work out their disc/free delivery of HD content. Now that Sony has spent billions of their money on Blu-Ray (paying both Studios and Toshiba off), they will not have the money available to compete against this latest threat.

Call for you MBP rebates ... mine was $600

For anyone who bought a new MBP within the last 14 days, call Apple and ask for a refund under their 14-day price protection plan. I did and I got a refund of $600. My MBP arrived last night and since it was custom configured with the 250GB hard drive (now standard), I couldn't just return it. I'd like to have the new multi-touch, the .1Ghz faster processor, the extra 256 Vram (for sure!) and the wireless n-standard. Since I can't, that $600 rebate makes me feel a lot better.

I think apple made it harder to leap from the upgraded blackbook to the base MBP. I would have liked a slight case redesign to keep the MBP ahead

Yes, it is.

I imagine one day you will want to sell it, and it is best to take the hit now then to sell it on craigslist in 10 months and take a larger hit because it is 2 generations old, etc.

Several years ago, I did the same with a PowerMac Dual G5. The day after buying, they were updated (this was before my Apple rumor monitoring days).

Iphone Sdk Smoke Shield

Everyones getting hyped about a refresh. Its great they updated this soon. Would everyone buying a new one want to have a 2.4 merom chip for another 6 months until they bring out the new form factor....

Somehow I can't get thrilled with this update. Frankly, it's like Apple is building a Frankenstein these days. They keep shoving updated parts into the same old exterior design.

"These days?" this has been Apple's MO for years and years. If you want got see one of the finest examples of "stopgap" production take a look at the swiss cheese G4 - not to be confused with the cheese grater G5s. They couldn't compete with CPU performance so they ramped up the clocks as far as they could and then had to drill huge holes all over the old quicksilver case to try and keep it cool.

See also "iPod Classic." They can't get the storage on the Touch yet so they ramp up the storage on the Classic to fill the hole until they can.

Wow, MacBooks are pretty close in specs to MacBook Pro's!

I see this repeated a lot and my question is-why do you think that? They seem to be FURTHER apart now, not closer.

We're paying $500 for 256mb+ of vram?

Pretty much. Okay, the CPU is worth quite a bit too, but it's not really worth THAT much (especially since the Macbook Pro isn't built to be used full blast).

Im confused. i still see "intel core 2 duo" listed. Is that Peryn?

Sort of picking on this post in particular, but I see this a lot-the CPU's official name is Core 2. Not Core Duo. The "Duo" thing just says how many cores/CPUs it has.

512 vram in a notebook? Daaaamn boooy!

It's what it should have had in the LAST update. It's nothing special, particularly when paired with a low end GPU. How about at LEAST giving us an "8700" (which is really a faster 8600) on the low end, and an 8800GTS on the high end (which is really a 9600GT).

what tells you its penryn? It still says core2 duo

The listed specs tell us it's a Penryn. Penryn is also a Core 2.

Does it need a re-design? It is the sexiest laptop out there.

Regardless, it's not built to really push the hardware (just try running the CPU and/or GPU at full blast to see what I mean) and it doesn't have a user replaceable hard drive. Two HUGE issues for some people.

Thank God. Now maybe we won't hear about MBP updates in every other thread.

As others have mentioned-you haven't read this thread. And yes, there will be tons of posts about an update, since this was just the obvious bare minimum Apple could have done.

Yes. VERY MUCH. The people who don't like this update are either made at themselves for not waiting or are one of those people that are never satisfied.

Oh I can be satisfied, but not with a sealed design and a low end GPU.

What do you guys suggest glossy or matte? I am a switcher and sounds like the glossy is a waste of time? Doesn't seem like anyone likes the glossy? Any suggestions?

Matte. Looks fantastic. "Glossy" is just missing the coating, so it reflects everything.

Sorry but this is one LAME update. They could have released this weeks ago. Uses the same exact motherboard. They just dropped in penryn and upped the vram and hard drive and swapped out the trackpad. LAME. No new design, no mag latch, same horrible plastic borders on the edges. No blue ray no mobile wifi, no sd card reader. Sorry but apple is starting to get a little too cocky. I am so sick of looking at the same exact lame old tired powerbook case. It was time for something new 2yrs ago!!

Yup. I thought the delay meant we were finally getting a better design. Or at least...something.

Hmm .. Isn't 3mb shared cache a bit in the standard 15'' low compared to the 6mb cache in the middle range MBP?

Isn't the speed just the same as before the update? - as in no "really" boost?

The high-end model is definitely a boost, but I'd expect the low end model to be better too. It's only knock is it's got 1MB less L2 cache. But it's got a faster clock speed that probably helps even that out, and the new architectural improvements. I'd expect it to be generally a bump.

Hallelujah. We have about a week of silence until the MBP whiners start again.

 right back at ya. I'm not one for low end GPUs, nor sealed cases, nor designs that aren't meant for pushing the hardware.

I would it it were me. You could either save some money and get the lower end model, or for $250 you're basically getting a better amount of video RAM and the equivalent of at least two speed grades faster CPU (at least-the difference can be bigger than that in some apps). Definitely worth it IMO (and personally I wouldn't have bought a new one with this update so close).

That's the 17" model which has had its SuperDrive high up for a while.

There is no excuse for Apple not offering a Higher Res 15" screen when you can get a sub $1000 Dell with one. Also not much excuse for the Mid Range 15" not having more RAM and HD for that price.

Yes, it is.

Take the hit now, trust me its very worth it...your getting double the graphics memory on top of a had drive and processor upgrade for that cheap...think of it that way and its more than worth it.

Which one?

Now I can't decide between refurb 17" prev gen imac or 20" new imac...I'd save 150, but less RAM expansion and a little smaller HD and smaller screen....what do you think?

i can only afford the base model or the refirbed 2.4 and i am only buying on performance (don't need the software update of trackpad).

should i buy the refirbed 2.4 mpb or the new 2.4 mpb based if i don't care about the new track pad thing

is this a true comparison performance wise?:

old refirb:
2.4 ghz
256 mb graphics
4mb l2

new mpb base model:
2.4 ghz
256 mb graphics
3mb l2

is the old one better???? help!!
