There is no excuse for it other than to differentiate the cheaper MacBook from the other models, in an attempt to force users up to the next price point.

Which is exactly what I said (typed!) - if the Combo drive didn't exist Apple wouldn't be able to charge extra for the Superdrive models.

(It is the same reason that Starbucks offers soy milk and extra shots in their coffee at an extra cost - some customers will pay extra for the privilege.)

I just bought my refurb MacBook discounted from Apple at $950 and it arrived Saturday. I threw in a 2GB stick making total memory 2.5GB for $60. So basically, after tax and shipping, I got my new MacBook with almost the same specs for $1010. Should I return everything and spend $190 more for 200Mhz difference, and 40GB additional HD space? I mean for less than $120 I can get a 200-250GB HD, and use the one in my MB now as a backup with an enclosure. What do you guys think?

If you're happy with the machine, I don't thinks it's worth it. Most, possibly all, of the time you wouldn't notice any performance difference.

So, a speed bump and more disk space... Well, I sleep easy knowing that my three-month old SR MacBook isn't hopelessly outclassed (yet).

Of course now I shall wait for a real update to the MacBook with the backlit keyboard, multitouch, LED lighting, etc

Apple is now citing battery life in "hours with wireless productivity". I always felt gipped because my 2nd gen macbook pro could never get 5 hrs even at min brightness unless I turned the wireless off.

If the MB had received the LED backlight and multi-touch I would be sold. I may purchase a MBP, but the 15" is really larger than I need, especially when traveling.

Unexpected update

well, it's new chips. These are penryn, not just merom at higher clocks.

I bought a new MacBook about a month ago and have no regrets because I didn't buy the MacBook because of the processor class. If I really wanted a prosumer machine, I would have just spent the extra money on a MacBook Pro. In the end, I can't think of why the new, new MacBook would have anything more than marginal value versus the joy of owning my laptop for the past month.

keyboard layouts

In the gallery I noticed that they changed the function-key lay-out on the MBP to match the lay-out of the slim apple keyboards..

Well, I bought a white MB a month ago and updated the hard drive myself. There is nothing in the latest rev that makes me regret my decision. If only I had waited, I could have gotten 10% faster processor, and 25% less L2 cache! Of course, it's a different chip set but, honestly, I don't think it will be material at the MB level. And, I didn't spend the last 6 weeks wringing my hands, waiting for the new ones :p

But, if I was in the market for a MBP, that 15"MBP is nice. I'd go for the middle one -- 1/2 GB on the video card, 2.5GHZ proc. 250GB HDD 6MB L2. That's a nice machine.

just saw the updates on apple's website, but when i had a look in the configuration part of the shop, the apple remote is now an optional extra it seems

i dont get that myself. granted i wouldn't need one but still, am confused about that

Grrrrr

Well.... thats just depressed me, i baught my mb just 15 days ago. 15 DAYS!!!!.

Hmmmm time to find out the returns polocys of the place i baught it from :p

Well said!

My SR BlackBook is my first Mac, and the last three months with it has brought the joy back computing again.

Wow second lame MB update in a row.

Where is the LED Screen?
Multi-touch Trackpad?

Couldn't we have waited until the usual April/May update and atleast get these? It's not like they don't already have the 13.3" LED's...

And still Combo Drive? WTF sooner or later its got to be costing them more to have it than to put a Superdrive in.
Also no remote? Beyond lame.

There has to be enough difference between the MB and Pro lines.

These MB are very good - Penryn processor ( it says on the Apple front page - *latest* mobile processor ), 2GB ram, larger hard disc.

How many people use track pads over a mouse? Are you really going to miss multi-touch?

If i bought my blackbook yesterday and opened it should i take it back and pay the restocking fee for the new blackbook?

If I were in your shoes, yes. In the past some people have returned and pay no restocking fee because of the close purchase and new release of machine. You could try asking nicely if they could forego the fee.

I agree, I don't like the way Apple are turning into 'You can have THIS - but THIS, well this, is $20 extra - cough it up!'

People will pay it, sure, but it doesn't make it right.

Omg I Am So Mad!

I am so upset that apple didn't release new mac book pros. WOW... they are ignoring my needs and i'm upset. This is awful. OMG blah blah blah.

People need to stop complaining about the combo drive. No one is forcing you to buy that model. The middle model is the version I would buy, but there are people who would like to save a couple hundred dollars and get the combo drive, slower processor, less ram, and smaller hard drive. I'm don't know many people who would, but its nice that apple is giving some people that option. Personally, I think the middle model is the best value.

But the cost to apple is probably negligible.... $10 for combo drive or $15 for superdrive (my made up numbers)...including old tech is not okay just because you have the option of paying more to get new tech instead. I can't believe people would justify it like that. Apple can do no wrong for some people.

so...
no multitouch trackpad on the new macbook?
hmph..
is it worth refunding my 2 week old blacbook for a new one?, is the new penryn chip any good?

so i still have some question regarding the return policy
i bought my macbook overseas, and if i want to return.., do i get money back?, or i can only exchange with another product? or what?
has any1 ever dones this before?
and also i left my box in the country where i bought, is this ok?

What's with the lack of 7200RPM drives? They're not that much more expensive and offer a very noticeable performance boost.

They should at LEAST be available BTO. The thermal design specs of today's 7200RPM laptop drives aren't much, if at all hotter than their 5400RPM bretheren.

Maybe...

If we complain enough and wait a couple weeks, Apple might listen and add multi-touch to the macbook too. Just a thought.
