I'm really wary of this update because my comp is just dandy and the fact that its a driver update for the Nvidia chipset even makes me more wary because i wasn't one of those people with the SATA 1.5 issue and didn't need the 1.7 firmware update

Will installing this update affect my perfectly fine a perfectly 3.0Gbps capable chipset in anyway?

I'm in the same boat, and ran the update. Still show 3.0Gbps and haven't noticed any issues since installing. I have yet to have a beachball since the reboot, in 5 or 6 hours of use.

Good, I had this freezing, often when web browsing -- the OS would freeze up, this is on a mid-2009 MacBook Pro 17"... I also had sounds which are like a hard drive head crash -- hopefully this update eliminates that...

Worked for me!

I have been hearing strange clicking and clunking noises from my hard drive for the past several weeks, but I can't say there have been pauses (I have a June, 2009 13" MacBook Pro). Nevertheless, after applying this update, the noises have gone away.

Beachball

So far no beachballs. I used to get the beachball stall every 20 minutes. Nobody could help so I reformatted and did a clean install of snow leopard. That reduced it considerably, but would still get 4-5 per day (slowly increasing). Since I've done this update, ZERO beachballs. It's only been less than 24 hours, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

all i have to say is.. about f$%^%g time ;)

the 7200rpm drive issue made logic pro useless

running more than 10 tracks would cause the
hard drive to spin down and logic to stop

this morning i ran a project with 20 tracks
without any issues. at last it works right

this is the first time i can say this 2.8 ghz
macbook pro is actually performing its job

hmm, it happens less, but my guess is that for my case, it's not stalling of the hard drive, but probably the screensaver.

I'm not sure I like being considered a "whiner" since I think large numbers of people all having constant clicking/freeze-ups/hangs/beeps/chirps (yes, all of these in a typical day of use) on essentially brand-new hard drives should be considered a legitimate issue... and I'm not sure how this update fixed the issues I was having with my hard drive, but I haven't had a single freeze-up/click in the three hours since I installed it, so (knock on wood) my MacBook is officially problem-free now. *sigh*

That was sarcasm. You see, Mac fans attack anybody who has a problem, and blame their issue on something THEY have done. For this Performance Update, it was not enough RAM, bad hard drive, failing to do a clean install, etc. "Whenever an Apple product fails to impress, it is due to operator error."

Then, out of the blue, Apple issues a release that fixes all the problems, and Mac fans pretend they never happened. For instance, this Performance Update, deleted user data, OSX 10.6.0, 10.6.1, and soon 10.6.2. 10.6.2 is going to fix a ton of bugs, but nobody likes to admit those bugs exist RIGHT NOW on everyone's systems and it was a mistake for Apple to ship Snow Leopard in August, and it was a mistake for many customers to install it. Denial.

Very interesting. Probably the most bizarre update I've ever seen come out of Apple. I had no idea people were having "performance" problems. I'm even more surprised this affects both Snow Leopard and Leopard. Has anyone noticed these problems before?

Anyway, the update isn't supported for my early '08 MBP (which is running S.L.).

Are you kidding ? There are over 1700 replies to this issue on the Apple support site:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2054387&start=1695&tstart=0

And that is not the only thread. I was really wondering why Macrumors never reported on the issue.

I just replaced the hard drive on my computer as I thought it was failing. Maybe this was the problem?

Problem synopsis:

I turned on my computer one morning and was greeted by a blinking question mark. That seems to mean the OS can't find a boot disk. I booted the Snow Leopard install CD and restored the HD from my last backup. All seemed to work fine.

I few days later I ran Disk Utility and it couldn't verify the disk. I forget the output, unfortunately. I tried to reboot and got a dark gray screen with what appeared to be a progress meter on the bottom. The meter never progressed.

I swapped out the HD, reinstalled from backup, and all seems well again.

I wonder, was my drive short or was the bug rearing its head?

I was getting shorter beachballs of 10 seconds or so on my 13 MBP, mainly in Safari. Annoying but not show-stoppers like some seemed to be getting.

I did the update today, also just upgraded from 2GB to 4GB RAM this morning. So far, so great! (both probably help a good deal.) I'm curious if I would get the same 10 second beachballs on 2GB RAM. I know 2GB is very light with a shared GPU, but the delays should not be that long.

Never had any beachballing or performance issues at all. But this morning the update came through Software Update. So I installed it, no difference at all here.

This appears to have been specifically about pauses. The symptoms you described are definitely failure symptoms.

my 13 Alu MB is still making clicking sounds.

also, my keyboard won't light up anymore.... great.

also, why does apple have to be so snotty in their update? "reported by a small number of users..."

......

yeah... i'm sure you upgraded for like 5 people. just fix it and shut up, who cares how many complaints you've had?!?!

I was definitely getting the 10-20 sec pauses, mostly in iTunes and Safari. Now we'll see tonight if it's fixed!

I got pauses when watching videos after i installed the 1.7 firmware, since i've gone back to 1.5 its seems to be fine. I do get the odd beachball in firefox however, im not sure if i should install this or not, im a bit wary now of updates.

For those that installed the update, what is the version and modification date listed in the System Profiler for "IOAHCIFamily.kext?" I got a kernel panic after installing the update so I want to make sure that it installed correctly.

Why is this a page 2 rumor when the articles on the front page cover Apple's financial report and a note about in-store purchases that really only applies to iApp devs?

My god man do you want to be the last guy running Leopard, upgrade to SL.

At work right now. Does anyone know if this update is also available for Leopard? Tons of us are having freezing issues while using QuickTime, and I'm hoping this is the solution.
It is well past the time to upgrade to Snow Leopard. The other thing I might suggest is making sure you have the latest version of quicktime installed.

Thank god and at long last.

My 13" MBP has long suffered the dreaded spinning beachball and it's been driving me up the wall! Despite a complete wipe of the hard drive and reinstall the problem has remained.

Now 48 hours in and still no crashes. Fingers crossed!
