1024X768

Just wondering if anyone remembers when in 2001 (not more than 2 years ago) professional video resolution for a laptop was 1024X768. I think all of you will be moaning in nine months when your new G5 PowerBooks don't meet the updated specs of the G5 PowerBook video cards? "Man, I don't have Billions of Colors." "What, why on earth did Apple make the video card so cool 1 Gig of 444Mhz DDR VRAM standard? Ahahahaha" "Why didn't they include 2 Gigs of DDR VRAM" "Why isn't it a $20 upgrade, I'm not paying $50 for that!" Give it a rest people, when it's in your favor you complain, when it isn't in your favor you complain. When it comes down to it $50 for double the VRAM is a sweet deal... Who cares if you don't have 1600X1024 (yet). Leave it for the G6 to blow that out of the water. Heh...

I'm upgrading from my 15" ti-book. I know that the 15" form-factor is most popular. Anyone out there in love with a 17"? I'm thinking about it... I travel a lot but don't work on planes when in enconomy (personal trips). My company travels me first so the 17" food tray will fit there... but in general, does anyone have a 17" and think it's great? Someone who actually puts it in a bag (I don't think it'll fit in mine...). Off to the Apple Store to check them out again before I order...

d.
I am looking to purchase a 17 inch for myself as a desktop replacement and a 12 inch for my wife (she likes the small size).

Then sell my 15 inch.

The 15 inch is nice, but the screen is a little too small for a desktop replacement IMHO. Other than that, I love it.

Why is the 128M video ram a BTO option? Must have been the same brilliant guy who thought up the original G5 line up. They always get the default configs wrong.

Do the 15 inch PBs have bluetooth? i didn't see it as an option on the site

All PowerBooks now come with both Bluetooth and AirPort Extreme built-in.

woo-hoo

It's a great site to see: The Apple webpage full of new updates!! Very exciting.

And while I'm happy that apple is making progress, I am a little jealous. I just got my ibook 2 months ago. Ah, well, I still love my ibook. :( :)

Crucial IS named brand RAM. for all i know it is better than kingston. I bought a couple of sticks for my old hp laptop and had no problems. I'm probably going to go with what newegg has which are the kingston 2700 for around 110.

Been wanting upgrade my 12"1ghz PB. I made a couple calls last week to both Crucial and OCW. After over 15 minutes on-hold with OCW, I called Crucial (got through in 5 minutes). I pretended to have a 1gb memory module bought from my company a few months ago. I described to them that what i thought was Kernel panics. All they asked was for a receipt number or actual date of purchase to search for their sales records. Guess who i will be ordering from...

Well I for one think it is an excellent update. Especially here in the UK where we have seen some significant price reductions across the line, however my point is where does this leave th iMac. You can now get an iBook with virtually the same processor, 768MB ram, a superdrive and bluetooth & airport extreme built in for less than the cost of a 17" iMac. The iMac situation needs to be addressed and fast. They are way too pricey compared to the rest of the line up.

Are there any vendors that buy memory? I would like to eventually add more ram, but don't want to just throw away the old sticks...

17" PB is like going from 4:3 to 16:9

You have answered your own question very WELL - at the Apple Store for a touch & feel experience.
The big sell for the 12" is its ultimate portability.
The big sell for the 17" is how much real estate you get on the screen to manage all the windows for editing with FCP4.5 ect. Portable (except that it is a laptop) it is NOT.
In Coach it is harsh.
In First Class it is primo.

My 19" CRT no longer feels large enough to edit comfortably on, so how is a 15" adequate (or 17" for that matter)?
The price we pay is in the larger size we have to lug around and how serious the work we have to do away from the office or studio, where you can plug it into the 23" Cinema Display & an external keyboard, and use the book as a 2nd screen.

I don't travel regularly or for business so a 17" once in awhile would not be a pain. But while I would not go for a demure 12" in compact size, the 15" feels so perfect compared to the 17", I have a hard time justifying it to myself.

Besides, serious editing etc. is done on the PowerMac with its larger screen. I want my laptop to be portable and a 14" iBook or 15" PowerBook screen is exactly in the sweet spot for size and portability. But, that's personal for me.

What is the sweet spot for you?
Only at an Apple Store will you find the answer after a hands-on experience. :p

You would think that at least the powerbooks would come with 512MB.
I can understand 256Mb in the ibook though

indeed. after all, they do market the powerbooks for graphic designers etc.. you don't do crap with photoshop if you have only 256 ram :p 64mb display card and 256 ram don't match.

Were the 15" models always 1.1" thick? For some reason I always thought they were 1" thich like the 17" model.

Actually i checked on the Apple(south africa) site which hasn't been updated yet and i checked the datasheet for the 15 incher and it says that it was actually 1.3 inches thick!

For what kinds of apps would you use the 128MB VRAM in the 15" powerbook? Is it mostly for games and video, or would the doubling of the ram benefit other apps (and which ones? Flash? Photoshop?).

I'm impressed you can double the vram for only $50, but I'm not sure that I need it.

Also, how much of a difference does the 5400 rpm drive make over the 4200 rpm. Can I just assume that disk access is 20-something percent faster?
Thanks.

As you said you're interested in graphics and games, I strongly recommend doubling the VRAM. You can add normal RAM anytime during it's life, you can only do that now. It's also very cheap to do, I bet buying RAM from a 3rd party such as Crucial would be so much cheaper than Apple that you could buy the VRAM upgrade also and still have change.

Have a look at bearfeats.com for a few comparisons of 4200/5400 drives, the improvements aren't as great as you'd imagine.

15" albooks were 1.1, but the tibooks and 17" were 1". But the weight of the 15" has increased from 5.6 to 5.7.

All powerbooks have bluetooth standard. And this rev adds airport cards as standard equipment.

What do you guys think: trade up from an ubook g4 to a new 15" powerbook...or wait for the g5 powerbooks.

My biggest concern is screen resolution, and that is the drawback of my ibook. I also want a superdrive...my needs actually aren't a lot, but no more 1024x768. should I wait for 6 months?

a17inchFuture,

didn't you just buy your new PB recently, knowing there were rumors all over the place about updates? If this is the case, don't whine about it now. You are an adult (I am assuming), you made a choice, live with it. You could have waited to buy if you wanted too.

Though, considering how much you whined on the new eMac thread I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

Mods, I apologize for a completely off-topic post... it just amazes me that a consumer, who constantly reads these boards and was aware of the updates just like the rest of us, now somehow says Apple is in the wrong here.

Faster, more powerful, machines at a lower cost.... those bastards! How could they do that to you?

Buying a new computer and then having a better version come out two months later does suck and even with these very helpful rumor boards Apple is so secretive that it makes it difficult to ascertain just when a computer will be updated, even last week people weren't sure that the Powerbooks would be updated.
However, 17inchfuture should realize that his computer is STILL AS GOOD AS THE DAY HE BOUGHT IT. There are better versions out there, but for everyone who feels shafted by a update remember two things: TECHNOLOGY EVOLVES CONSTANTLY
YOUR COMPUTER IS STILL AS GOOD AS THE DAY YOU BUY IT
My Powerbook is just as fast, light and pretty as the day I bought it, but other machines have overtaken it, but my PB is still worth every penny I paid for it nearly 3-years ago.

If you mean sell, hell yes! People here talked highly of OWC, and their price was at least $75 less. But support and return privileges are important.
