1.0.276 for my two active ones.
One of them is about 700 km away for about 4 weeks now (my home base, not moving at all, testing how it works). The second one walks with me in my backpack.
The position of both is updated "on request". They are doing a perfect job.
...that category of devices I own, I do not care about the firmware. They work. Everything ok then...

I think only a random 10% subset of airtags will get the 291 update at the moment. If you didn't get it yet, maybe you're not in the lucky 10%. Apple will probably release it for everyone next week.

I ordered eight and used three of them. They work well for keys, but some use cases didn't play out as I had hoped. We share a car and I put one in my car to help with finding it when she parks someplace weird, but the lack of sharing support and the limited distance when inside a car makes it less useful. I have spares for luggage and bags, but I wouldn't recommend people buy more than need thinking they will find a use for them.
Well at least you have a solution for not being able to share them, you have extras! Just use them in pairs, one for you and one for your wife and then you both have a way to locate your car.

This is bloody messy. The fix is easy, Apple just needs to produce a short web page that gives the info we need:
  • Link to changelog/fixes
  • What’s New
  • How to bloody update the damn things
  • Same with AirPods. No idea why they’ve gone down this route with these particular products.

Reminds me of Washington; “we won’t know what’s in the bill until we vote on it“
AnyWho, I’ve been on the fence as to whether to order a set of these. Apple is fantastic when it comes to marketing, but when it comes to products that work as intended —HomePods anyone? 🤓

What happened with Home Pods?

Too simple and upfront to be true 🙄
This is why I'm not rushing to get the latest updates any longer if I don't have an issue.

I'm not understanding. HomePods work great. Of course, they are wifi, so your wifi has to work. Most complaints I've heard boiled down to old, clunky wifi, or radio interference

oh, and the airtags work as intended as well

Agreed. I think that guy just wanted an excuse to complain about DC.

I disagree. I received a HomePod for my birthday a couple of years ago, I was so impressed with the sound, I immediately went out and bought a second one so I could set them up as a stereo pair.

The audio on HomePods is awesome but now, I have had nothing but issues with both of them. I've been using Apple products since 1988 and tried everything to rectify the problems but they persist. One of them has an incredibly annoying random popping sound and after some research, it turns out this is a hardware issue which Apple is failing to respond to, and in any case it's outside of warranty. The other one doesn't have the popping issue but will randomly stop playing without intervention.

I have finally given up and decided to return to Sonos which never had any of these issues. They may not be as good in terms of sound quality but they 'just work'. To be honest, this is one of the most disappointing products I have bought from Apple and even more frustrated they cost me nearly £600 for the pair. I'm not surprised they discontinued them.

I'm glad to hear yours are working as intended but a little research shows they are not all they are cracked up-to be in terms of functionality for many. Shame as they sound awesome.

Apple, just put a damn update button for Airtags and Airpods.
This. Same for carrier updates. There should be a check for updates button instead of just going to a screen in settings and waiting.
For carrier updated the manual update instructions say to Tap Settings > General > About, then Follow the onscreen instructions to install your carrier update.

I’ve known there was a carrier update available and going to that screen did nothing for days and then suddenly the update appears on the 38th try. A simple “Check for update” button for AirPods, AirTags and yes, Carrier Updates seems like a no-brainer.

When Apple anounces users can get AirTag updates on demand:
User: update AirPods AirTags
Apple: update requested
(two weeks later)
Apple: preparing update
Apple: update complete

You don’t need to do anything or be concerned about it , so how can this be a bloody mess? Just leave them be.

Showing the build number isn't exactly helpful, unless we just happen to notice that the version number is different. Just saying...

What *should* it be? If magic strikes...

My fourth airtag which had been out of range updated after sitting near my phone for three hours. Phone didn’t need to be charging. I wonder if the updates happen in cycles. So a firmware check is done every few hours and then rolled out to connected devices when required

No updates here. I won't be suprised if Apple is only sending the update to a small group to beta test it
