not showing in Catalina
Catalina is no longer supported. For years, Apple only provides Safari updates for the 3 most recent versions of MacOS. Ever since Mavericks 10.9, you can consistently determine what the final version of Safari will be by looking at the point release OS code version.

Mavericks 10.9: Safari 9
Yosemite 10.10: Safari 10
El Capitan 10.11: Safari 11
Sierra 10.12: Safari 12
High Sierra 10.13: Safari 13
Mojave: 10.14: Safari 14
Catalina 10.15: Safari 15
Big Sur 11 (10.16): Safari 16

Safari 17 should be the final version for Monterey 12 (10.17), and Safari 18 should be final for Ventura 13 (10.18).

Ventura release is right around the corner, which means Ventura 13, Monterey 12 and Big Sur 11 will be the only operating systems receiving Safari 16.

Nice, I like the new password suggest edit feature.

But there seems to be a bug with tabs. Dragging a tab to a new window or to an existing safari window causes problems (tabs vanishing or even weirdly duplicating in a sort of greyed out mode). Hope they fix this soon.

tabs are completely broken for me ... I am not able to move a tab from one Safari window to another ... and when I manage to do so, the tab duplicates to the second window ... and when I want to close one of those tabs, both close

buggy AF

Exactly the same here! On 14" Macbook Pro with MacOs 12.6.

It seems tabs background loading (in case you open several tabs at once from a bookmark group or similar) is broken again as it was with Safari 15 in the early phase. Is it also the case for you ? (M1, latest macOS 12.6 (non beta) and safari 16 from last software update)

Toggling the "Disable Background Tab Suspension." Flag in the Debug menu doesn't seem to help this time, looking for another workaround/fix...

it's more than just that. I don't like how my Applications folder is now littered with Safari extensions, amongst other complains.
Agreed. Although, as others have probably said, you can put them all into their own folder (I happen to have my safari extensions folder inside the Utilities folder as well) and Safari will still find them. ;)

ah good idea!

Just upgraded to new Safari. What a huge mistake. When I open a group of tabs, they all open in the background, and refuse to load until I select one of the tabs. Does anyone have a solution to this? I'm seeing others complaining of the same problem.

It's a bug fest, the Safari team at it's finest.

The solution is to reinstall MacOS on top of itself. This option does not erase your data, and will restore the Safari version that shipped with the OS (for Monterey 12 this is Safari 15). This is the only Apple supported option for downgrading Safari.

Code:
Reinstalling macOS does not remove data from your Mac. To begin installation, select Reinstall macOS from the utilities window in macOS Recovery, then click Continue and follow the onscreen instructions.

Hello everybody,
after installing macOS 12.6 with Safari 16, notifications from websites I have subscribed stopped working.
What I mean is that even though I receive notifications (Alerts) in Notification Center, when I click on them (Show) they do nothing. It doesn't open in a new tab in Safari as it used to do.
Any help?

Lack of uBlock Origin support, and decent cookie management, are the two reasons I stick with Firefox.

I'd like to switch to Safari as it has its advantages, but for me the two issues above are blockers.
I mainly want to switch for Keychain and the coming Passkey. But the ****-tastic extension environment and specifically the lack of uBlock origin is a dealbreaker every single time I try. It’s infuriating.

When I first moved to Firefox I also missed Keychain. But now I use Bitwarden and it has many advantages.

I have one website that needs three bits of info to log in: impossible for Keychain to do this but Bitwarden can be told to fill in any field. Also, my router requires a password and Keychain refuses to understand that the empty box with thhe word "Password" above it is a password field :) Bitwarden? No problem.

Passkey is an interesting addition, but I've not used it yet. Bitwarden can also do 2FA but so far I deliberately keep that separate. I'm also not yet convinced that Passkey is that good, as it seems to really lock one in to only being able to use your own Apple products, logged in with your iCloud ID, to be able to use it.

I see this as a feature.. why should a page load if I dont bother with it? saves memory

Definitely not a feature but a bug we already had by Safari 15 unless it was then fixed in 15 TP and then also in the main Safari 15 branch. In Firefox and Chrome if you open multiple tabs at once, the contents will also be loaded in background.

It seems it has corrected itself after a reboot. *knock knock knock
I wish it was that simple... :) One of the first things I tried, just before trying with a blank new user. Next thing I'll try is on an Intel-based mac (M1 here).

I could've sworn it was this thread where someone recommended Orion. I just tried it and I've already made it my default. I'm sure it'll annoy me in some way or another as I get into its weeds, but it impressed the hell out of me very quickly so, for now at least, I'm making it my main.

So after some research I just switched to Vivaldi.
Vivaldi was my main for a couple of years but I eventually grew tired of its 'quirks' and crashing.
Wipr is an excellent Safari adblocker for macOS & iOS.
It flat out didn't work, at all, for me. Installed it on a fresh install of MacOS on a new MacBook Air, and it just would not work on any sites. Researching it and trying all the 'fixes', the dev ends up placing all the blame on Apple for this which... I mean... even if true, it's like, dude... I paid for your extension and now you tell me it won't work 'just because'? At the very least, don't charge for an extension that you know has major issues for a lot of people. Requested a refund right after.

And here I was thinking that one of my extensions or app was causing that. Glad to know its an issue I don't face alone. Im also experiencing a weird glitch, where once I drag a tab to another window it mirrors it in both windows but then when I close it from the original window it just shows blank and then I have to close it anyways. Its really annoying me.

Did you enable the browser extension in macOS or refresh the definitions on iOS? It's worked flawlessly for me for years across all my Macs and iOS/iPadOS devices. Sometimes it works too well as it can be very aggressive with the blocking.

Same problem with me. Everything was great with tab groups before I upgraded to Safari 16. Now the tabs won't load until I click on them. What a huge waste of time.

Tabs background loading issue also seems to be solved with Safari Technology Preview (Release 154 (Safari 16.0, WebKit 17615.1.6.2)), good.
