Yes, to some a surprise....

Snow Leopard and Lion are the only OS X's left that have some very expensive equipment (32 bit) that still have to use the OS X to run. They will not run on OS X after Lion due to companies not updating drivers, especially for the audio recording industry..

You may say, "Why then do the companies NOT update the drivers....?

Well, of course so the users HAVE to buy new products (keeps the machine going)...but in some cases we have no choice because there is not other products similar to purchase and upgrade too.

Most of the major audio recording companies fall under this. Tascam and Alesis are some to include. The say that it is difficult to make drivers for the equipment due to OS X changes in architecture....translated that they do not want to spend the money on updating "legacy" items and desire us to "buy" new stuff. Well....nothing like the Alesis MasterControl or Tascam's US-428 out there to buy...so we are left with not updating...

This is why you still see users on Snow Leopard and Lion. ;)
tascam 428?? Doubtful any "major recording studios" are using a model built in the late nineties. Unrealistic to think any company would support software for it or any consumer tech that was discontinued that long ago.

True...the Tascam US-428 had a good run, around 2000 to 2007, but...the Alesis MasterControl is a pro item. Never heard anything bad about that gear. Came out around 2008-9 and went out in 2011. Expensive and only lasted three years...?!? There is nothing out there right now that has real faders and knobs, buttons etc. in comparison, but everything has gone to virtual iPad type of stuff. For those semi-pro or home user studios, who prefer to move a real fader etc. we are out-of-luck. Yes..."old school", but some still do not want virtual everything...

Consider at least the possibility that the exploits that had to be patched don't exist in Lion.

I'm not saying that's the case, but it's all too common that new technology (OS upgrades) brings new "opportunities."

Apple did discontinue security updates for Snow Leopard, but if they did the same for Lion, I missed the announcement.

They're sadly no longer updating Lion. Which would be alright if they hadn't imposed arbitrary limits on which machines could upgrade to Mountain Lion (Based on pure Apple Laziness of not writing a driver)

Does anyone elses safari crash if they have more than four 300+mb downloads going at the same time? Mine's been doing it since Safari 8.0.

Secured PDFs won't open

RE: Safari 7.1.4 on 10.9.5 -- just updated and now, no dialog box is presented for downloaded PDFs requiring a password to open. Anyone else experience the same issue?

Apple supported my white Macbook up till Lion, so how about I have no choice? The laptop still works fine, put in a SSD. But Apple doesn't care. You can of course be snarky and be wrong too, as you illustrate.

Good for you, at least you have Safari! Apple doesn't care, I don't even have Safari on my original 128k Macintosh.

The choices you have are between Firefox and Chrome in regard to secure browsers.

I don't understand why people are upset when any computer manufacturer makes an upgrade that breaks legacy software from third parties. If the vendor chooses not to update drivers how is that the computer makers fault at all? Alesis gave you the finger not Apple. Obsolescence is a major data point in tech purchasing.

I wish Apple did offer long-term OS support for a fee.

Lets say that Apple maintains an OS for 3 years. It would be nice if Apple offered long-term OS support for an additional 2 years providing security-only updates for a small fee.

While the latest OS releases are free which makes it easier to upgrade from a capital expense view, it does take a lot of resources to do the upgrade still.

Apple never announces the discontinuation of software support, afaik. The last few years, they seem to release security updates for the most recent 3 versions of OS X and the most recent 2 versions of iOS, which currently means 10.8/9/10 and iOS 7/8 and covers devices made as far back as 2007 and 2011, respectively. While I'd like to see iOS 6 continue to get security updates - I know a few people who are hanging on to their 3GS for some reason - I don't think anyone should be too surprised that their 8+yr old Mac is no longer supported.

I recall an exception being made in the case of iOS 6, but that's basically it. Have they released an iOS 7 update since iOS 8 has been out?

Hm, you may be right. (And I think the exception you're thinking of was probably the Heartbleed bug?) I was thinking they'd released an update for the recent FREAK SSL issue, but they only did that in the form of iOS 8.2. Nothing for iOS 7 yet. That said, I accidentally compensated for that by getting the minimum hardware for iOS 7 wrong, so what I said about phones back to 2011 (iPhone 4S) as still being supported still applies. lol iOS 7, if updated, would also support the iPhone 4 (2010).

For this case I fail to see a browser necessary. These machines should by obvious reasons (production critical) no internet access. What would be a business case for these machines to surf the Internet - except nice to have ?

Agree...you are right. I cannot blame Apple for innovation, especially concerning obsolescence. At least Apple still allows their older OS X's to work on newer systems if needed (as compared to competitors OS's). Third party makes the business decision NOT to update their product's drivers and is not Apple's concern.

Agree...for those that need older OS X's that are not supported with newer Safari updates, we have the option to use third party alternatives like Firefox or Chrome. If concerned with internet browser necessary, then either use alternatives or not enable internet access. Production critical systems do not need internet access unless they need updates, but if it is an older system and software, probably no need for updates any longer and therefore no need for internet access.

Agree with the comments and has changed my view on the topics. thanks! ;)

I am unable to replicate this issue. For me the new tab opens and it keeps me in the original tab with the old url displayed.

Oh if you submit a bug report make sure to include that information as well or else they may state that they are unable to duplicate the issue.

Safari works better without extensions!

I had entirely gave up on Safari and moved to Firefox because of stability issues. Safari would take up to 60 seconds to load and going to certain websites would make the browser freeze and trigger the mouse "beach ball."

But now that I have deleted and disabled my extensions for Safari, it's a lot more stable and "snappier."

Now I can keep using it to sync all my content/info to my other iOS devices.

Nobody is arguing your reasons, but to say "God damn you Apple...!".

You can't demand an update for a 5 year old OS this days, you have to be grateful if it ever comes.

Version 8.0.4 (10600.4.10.7)

Noticing that a site I have visited all week suddenly won't display properly after upgrading Safari.

NCAA MMOD

Any clue why I'm experiencing this?

Displays fine in Google Chrome.

Safari 8.04 ruins my yosemity install

I downloaded Safari 8.04 and it ruined my OS 10.10 installation. Having just managed to get the system working without any lags or beach ball problems, straight after loading safari I was back with lag and the dreaded beach ball making my macbook pro late 2011 effectively useless
