Apple today issued a second beta version of iOS 4.3 to registered developers, marking a quick turnaround since the initial beta version was seeded one week ago.

The new seed carries build number 8F5153d, up from the previous 8F5148b, and is similarly available in versions for the iPad, iPhone 4 and 3GS, and third- and fourth-generation iPod touch, as well as in a separate version for the new Apple TV.

There is no word yet on changes in the new build, but the first beta version added for support for a number of features including personal Wi-Fi hotspot functionality, new multi-touch gestures for the iPad, support for video streaming from third-party and web apps via AirPlay, and a new software option for selecting the functionality of the iPad's side switch.

Have previous updates on 3GS and 4 caused slowdowns?

Have any iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 owners here experienced slowdowns after installing iOS updates? Just curious, as I still own a first generation iPhone, and experienced a huge slowdown after updating to OS 3 from OS 2.

Cool!

Keep us updated on what it is!

Does anybody think that Apple will release 4.3 at the same time the iPad comes out? Would it be the right time frame?

Dammit. Those 4 & 5 finger gestures would have been incredibly useful. A million clicks and double clicks and taps and double clicks and holds and taps and clicks just to get programs opened and closed and out of multitasking is more than a little clunky.

What would help is if every app wouldn't multitasking by default. If you wanted to keep an app open, hold the home button down for 2 sec and it minimizes...

& if they wanted to get fancy, allow that as an option.

& if they wanted to get really fancy, allow the user to set applications of their choice (skype, IM, etc) to run counter to that and default to multitasking after all.

"Update: 9 to 5 Mac notes that Apple has clarified in the documentation accompanying the new build that the four- and five-finger iPad gestures added in the initial build will not be included in the public release of iOS 4.3 and are simply being included in developer versions so that Apple can obtain input from developers on their functionality.
This feature will not be enabled in iOS 4.3 for customers, but we are providing this preview to gather input on how these gestures work with your apps."

Boooooo!!! I guess we'll have to wait for 5.0. But will that be with the new iPad or the new iPhone like usual?

Apple will say that the original iPad can't handle it. :)

Thumbs down for no finger gestures!

Yea it really should be included. What I am wondering is if they are going to hold it for iPad 2 since it is a little on the slow slide when swiping between apps. Another downfall of only 256 MB of ram.

Hmm, no home button on iPhone 5? Looks like the gestures are for iOS 5.

well i guess that debunks the whole idea of the next ipad and iphone not having the home button. that's a bummer, i would love to have those gestures available on the ipad. i hope they do that in 4.4?

anyway, question:
— for a release like the ipad 2, does apple most likely have an exact date for when they know they're going to announce it/release it? or would they just have a rough idea at this point and when iOS 4.3 is done seeding and is ready, they will then announce the ipad 2, presumably, at a time they can show off iOS 4.3 at the event too. does that make sense? basically, do you think they have a strict date set in place already, or just an idea and then when things are ready, they'll announce it/release it?

Disappointing, but it just sounds like they want to give the devs enough time to make sure the new gestures don't interfere with their apps.

No, 4.3 should be out by the end of February or the beginning of March. Usually in the first or second week of March they have an iOS developer preview for the next main version. (iOS 5.0)

Ah...there we go.

So finger gestures will be one of the 'big things' that makes iOS 5 exciting.

Makes sense. The hardware on the i5 probably isn't going to change as much as it did last year...they'll need to save some software goodies for the new phone to make it exciting.

I think it's going to be for iPad only...

No, please no... those gestures are the biggest advance in my iPad usage patterns since multitasking! Take away every other new feature, just leave my four/five-finger gestures, please?

The gestures are AMAZING! And not glitchy at all! Why would they remove them :(

I'm already hooked on them!
