Sooner.

The Verizon iPhone is going to be shipping with 4.3 already installed on February 10th (maybe even February 3rd), and given that the first beta was just release 1 week ago, these betas seems to be moving rather fast leading to an earlier release (rather than later).

Were not sure about that yet. The demo Verizon iPhones were running 4.2.5

The gestures are AMAZING! And not glitchy at all! Why would they remove them :(

I'm already hooked on them!

They're doing it this way to give devs time to make sure their apps aren't broken by the new gestures. It's a great move by Apple IMO and shows respect to the developer community

I'm sure they'll make an appearance in a later version of IOS

FWIW, I found the gestures incredibly glitchy with beta 1, almost to the point of being unusable

It's amazing how quickly some of you jump to conclusions based on something so flimsy. Finger gestures show up for testing in a 4.3 developer beta release ... therefore Apple is going to use it to force people to upgrade to iPad 2 to get it.

Relax, people.

I'm pretty sure everyone said it would be an 'iOS 5' feature, not an 'iPad 2' feature.

Who here doesn't think the iPad 1 will get iOS 5?

I think you're rolling those eyes at nobody.

Omg apple!!! Please tell me we don't have to click the tiny button at the bottom of our iPad to move around! Do they not know how much work that goes into clicking something that's already there?
Btw, if you couldn't tell, I'm being extremely sarcastic. Thinking logically, why would apple issue a feature like 4/5 finger gestures that eliminates the use of the home button? It's only been there 9 months. I admit it's a good idea, but if you get annoyed that it's not going to be used for the current iPhone and iPad, maybe you should start selling your iPad now to buy the next one which will probably do away with the home button.
At least we've moved on from the verizon iPhone whining...

Disappointing, but it just sounds like they want to give the devs enough time to make sure the new gestures don't interfere with their apps.

I was a bit worried that we might not be seeing the gestures until I read your post. Makes a lot of sense.

Well I'm still looking forward to my rotation lock coming back. :)

That really sucks. The gestures are my favorite feature of 4.3. It explains why we have to register our devices in xcode to activate it though. It looks like as long as you have a developer account, you can keep using it through the betas, and probably the public release as well.

I never activated my device through Xcode and still have gestures.

Thats just quite harsh putting it on the beta and then saying that it won't be released for the final when it seems to work really well. Hope they do change their mind about it though but if they don't then I'd rather have it in iOS 5 than not at all

5 fingers

I really like the 4/5 finger gestures to close to home and swipe left/right between apps.
Would be a shame to leave them out.

Have any iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 owners here experienced slowdowns after installing iOS updates? Just curious, as I still own a first generation iPhone, and experienced a huge slowdown after updating to OS 3 from OS 2.

I'm on an iPhone 3G, which has the same configuration as the original iPhone in terms of CPU and memory. I noticed a slowdown with the upgrade to iOS 4, but improvements were made with 4.2.

Rumor has it that 4.3 won't be available to anything older than a 3GS. Bummer.

The second beta still contains the gestures though right? Can someone who has updated confirm this?

I'm simply going to update the betas and hold off the official release so I can keep the gestures, I think they are great

The gestures suck. I REALLY hope Apple doesn't, and never implements them. The problem isn't the gesture itself, that's fine. The problem is then you have this command that will force many apps to change their UI (music apps, games, etc), and will be a disconnecting experience for most users. If they accidentaly gesture and don't realize it, they'll think the app has froze. There's nothing intuitive about it, rather than the big giant home button that screams "press me! press me!" So for developers and UI cohesion, I really hope these gestures stay far away.

I thought that the 4-finger swiping gesture on the iPad was very intuitive. Most apps don't have a four-finger swiping gesture anyway. There will probably be some leeway built in to prevent accidental activation (much like the home screen now. There's a wee bit of movement your finger can make before it actually swaps home screens). In any case, that's why the previewed it devs, to see how it would interact with their apps and head off any problems before it's officially released.

I'm sorry but you can't rely on 5 finger gestures alone. I always use my iPhone 1 handed. I am right now typing this. Without a home button I would have to use another hand to switch, multi task or return.

However I do agree that using one button for all these tasks is not workable or intuitive

I'm not enjoying the gestures very much. There's something unnatural about 4 and 5 finger gestures, at least with my hand, anyway. Like trying to sit on a 5-legged stool with different length legs.

The implementation itself is quirky or buggy. I frequently see the app switcher mysteriously spring back to the previous app after I do the swipe.

No you won't. The betas expire after the official release, and you have to update to the release version.

I imagine the gestures will still be there for the release, just for devs only.

Its strange, I don't know what happened to 4.2.0 (went straight to 4.2.1 for public) and 4.2.2, 4.2.3, and 4.2.4?

That's normal. Not every build makes it public.

The version numbers mirror the significance of the upgrades.

4.2.1
- 4 = major OS version
- .2 = minor OS version
- .1 = tweaked/bug-fixed version of 4.2

Not a hard and fast rule about it, but that's the general rule of thumb. The next release will have some significant improvements (give or take), so it warrants a new minor version number increase.
