Yep. I can confirm it is there and am downloading now. That's like 1000 updates in like two weeks Apple. Thanks, but slow down. Looks like they want to make Leopard as perfect as possible before Snow Leopard.

Security Updates aren't about 'perfection.' They are about 'oopsies.'

But I applaud them.

The point of security updates is to make sure we don't suffer from any such thing. I expect the first virus/worm will appear on Mac OS X in, oh, 30+ years? Seriously, I don't anticipate ever seeing one. Exploits are different, and they exist, but it's a direct contact approach. Someone would have to actively be trying to gain access to your machine or cause problems, so the effect is minimal. Still good to patch to try and eliminate those, but you won't see widespread effects of something like that.

True, insofar as people update. Mac users are far more likely to be out of date than Windows users. Any one of these security holes that applies to both 10.5 and 10.4 basically applies to almost the entire Mac population on the date of the update release. A worm at that time or within a week or two would spread very well. Look how well the MS SQL worm (slammer?) spread; obviously there are more Macs on the Internet than MS SQL servers.

This should have been in the 10.5.8 update as this vulnerability has been known since July 28th.
Yeah, I would agree. But I think 10.5.8 was too close to release for this to be included.

Things are a little different...

It is good to get security updates and to get them as soon after a flaw is found as possible. Apple aren't there yet - the last update implemented a fix that I believe was available for over a year, but they will have to catch up soon...

somebody tell me...

Somebody tell me if I am wrong but for some reason it appears to me that no matter how you slice it... I am asitivley, posilutly almost 100 percent sure that after this update safari seems to be snappier

Weird Firefox Behavior

I'm wondering if this patch is going to fix something that's been happening lately, in firefox it seems like I get redirected to another site, a screen pops up telling me my computer is infected with a virus. I have "block pop-ups" checked and the service it offers is always something different like "My Virus Checker". I have scanned with VirusBarrier... It's weird, and I know everybody says this but... I'm not surfing porn, honest (maybe my cat did it).

That sounds like domain hijacking somewhere in the path between your DNS server (the server that translates URLs into IP addresses) and your browser that is altering fault-related (e.g. domain not found) handling. This problem was that the DNS server would completely crash by sending specially crafted requests.

Thanks Blaat. Is it a problem, is there a solution? I'm clueless about network issues...

I got the first WiFi drop out after 2 months with the mid-2009 MBP 15. Maybe it's just a coincidence with the security update. I will look and see. Hope it's not.

Hmm, on my Macbook Air (which I'm not on, now) I applied the update, and now I can't get an IP address from my Airport Extreme base station. Kind of a problem with a wireless-only computer. :p Until I get to the bottom of this, I'm not going to apply the patch to any of my other boxes.

BTW this patch, being it fixes a BIND vulnerability, is not due to an OS X security problem per se (well okay, the security update is an Apple patch, but you know what I mean). Every vendor that supplies BIND either has released a patch already or will be soon.

Yes, but this time Apple released the patch in a REASONABLE time frame. Very much unlike their recent behavior with the Java patch, which took 6 months. What's even stranger, is that this patch is more of a server problem, and is only a DoS, not a worm risk. The Java bug was a problem for clients, and had a huge trojan or data-loss risk.

It is also UNLIKE the iPhone fix, which they had for 6 weeks, but didn't release until the day after they got blasted in the press.

Maybe they are learning? Nah...

is anybody having a problem with this update?

I installed it and shortly afterwards found myself unable to drag anything (not just in the Finder, but throughout the whole OS)

Hmm, that's odd. I don't have any problems like that as far as I can tell. The update and your issue may very well be unrelated, though. I wish I could help more, but I'm not very tech-savvy...

yet.

I don't intend to keep posting updates :p but this is quite odd, and the timing is rather coincidental. Since I applied this security update, I can only connect to wireless if I manually configure my IP settings (IP, netmask, and router); but if I attempt to use DHCP, like I've always done before, all I can get is a self-assigned IP (169.x.x.x).

Mainly I'm posting this here so if others have issues they'll know they're not alone - but I do realize my experience may be a one-off, and there certainly is a possibility the problem is unrelated to the update. However the update did deal with DNS, and given the timing it seems probable it triggered this problem (even if it's a one-off), one way or the other.

Just updated too.

What's great to see is that Apple is acting quickly on security issues and addressing them.

Need i point out the irony of how we applaud apple for making security updates, but we crucify microsoft for having a scheduled security updates.

just downloaded and installed the update, and not surprisingly, everything went smoothly... to be honest, I'm probably the last person you'll hear griping about Apple's latest round of updates, just because it's reassuring to know that my computer is more secure than it was before installing the update- whether it be to cover an "oops" or to simply protect my computer (even if it's likely the power of suggestion more than anything else).

now if only that hard drive fix/update would show up in Software Update so I can get my hard drive can stop spazzing...

My iMac 24" 2.4GHz C2D locked up after re-boot.
I had to un-plug my FW800 2TB external HD (where my Time Capsule is stored) for it to re-boot, once done everything appeared fine so re-plug in the external HD....
