Not to me...

Need i point out the irony of how we applaud apple for making security updates, but we crucify microsoft for having a scheduled security updates.

I for one have never criticised Microsoft for releasing updates: updates good. Unpatched systems on the internet prone to infestation bad. Regardless of the operating system or software in question.

What I don't understand is the issue with restarting a computer: in the last week my MacBook and both my PCs have been restarted a few times, I don't see any problem, whole process takes under a minute...

What I can see from the delta of my TM backup the reboot really isn't needed. Only binaries (no libraries) where updated that are only used when you are running a DNS server or performing DNS requests using the command line.

Takes under a minute?

Well, sure - if you haven't opted to have your Mac encrypted. Takes a bit longer, then. (Haven't bothered to time mine. I think it takes around 10 minutes - while it does its backup - but don't really care. There's always time for a coffee....)

Still though - I don't see the point in complaining. It's a security update and those are *always* worth the time. Always.

My 2.2 Macbook is sluggish after this. There seems to be a very slight delay in user interaction - typing has a slight delay as does text highlighting with the trackpad. Scrolling in Safari and Firefox is a tad jerky if you do it quickly (using two fingers on trackpad or slider.)
This was after I'd updated with this security update, safari 4.0.3 and Airport client update.:(

I think it's funny to see so many people afraid of reboots.

not afraid, just annoys the hell out of me, my macbook takes some time to restart, and open the programs again, mind you I gotta save all my applications and reopen them later.

never used to be this bad.

whats with all the reboots?, osx has become a microsoft.

Actually they've become what MS used to be. In the last three months I've had to reboot my Macbook at least four times. I rebooted my Vista machine for the first time in that period last night.

... I expect the first virus/worm will appear on Mac OS X in, oh, 30+ years?

Sooner, if market share ever significantly improves. Yes, Darwin and the core set of components upon which Mac OS X is based are primary reasons we are relatively safe, but I wish people would wake up and realize the MAIN reason. Hackers go after not just easy, but also plentiful targets. That's the PC market and Windows.

There's no doubt in my mind, a concerted hacker community hell-bent on wrecking havoc with the Mac could and would succeed, but why bother - when there are easier pickings? The days of platform safety are clearly numbered if market share improves to rival PC market share. I think Apple knows this and their pricing margin strategy has done more than bring extra profit to the shareholders. IMO, it has long had the successful effect of keeping hackers focused on other platforms.
