Question.

Anyone running Big Sur on a 13" MBP using TB3 to HDMI to a TV using it as external monitor (1080P or higher) with MBP lid closed? Every time I disconnect my 2017 MBP 13" from my TV, Safari's top search bar and tabs end up being beyond where I can reach with the mouse pointer above the Menu bar.

Currently I place the top left corner of Safari under the 'File' Menu edge when connected via HDMI on my TV at 1080P. Yet when I disconnected (lid still closed) and then open the lid ... I have to close Safari since I cannot access the top 2" of it. This is in Catalina production so I'm curious if this is an issue with Big Sur??

Thank you kindly.

Is anybody using ZOOM (both for just joining, as well as hosting video meetings) with this beta?
Didn't work for me yet with the last one; was super laggy and camera didn't work at all..

Yes. I use zoom a lot. At one point I heard Big Sur didn't play well with one of zoom's updates. Haven't updated zoom ever since and my old zoom worked well with beta 5 and 6. Apparently there have been a few zoom updates. But the zoom update notes say nothing about big sur. I know my old version of zoom works with big sur so that will do me nicely for now.

Alternatively if you do update zoom, make sure you keep a copy of the old zoom app first in case the update doesn't work with big sur.

The alternate command suggested elsewhere:

sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/smbfs.kext

did indeed work to restore access to my SMB shares. thanks!
Does anyone have a suggestion on how to make this happen in a sort of script when you restart macOS?

Good question, I'm interested too! If possible I'd like to avoid learning the ins and outs of launchd, or purchasing a launchd utility (Lingon, LaunchControl) for this very temporary need.

I was thinking something a lot more basic, like a script using the Apple Script Editor. I am using that to mount my NAS shares and it works great when created as an application, run in the User Login Items.

The Terminal command woul dhave to be changed though, as the "sudo" requires the password to continue;

sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/smbfs.kext

1) Can that be changed to run without using "sudo", and if not, can I add the password to the command?
2) What kind of script should we use?

I decided to buy and use the utility "Lingon X" to create all the right launchd files and commands to have the kextload happen every boot, executed as root. Real simple to use, worked like a charm. Using Lingon X, these are the responses I used:

Name: [whatever you want to name your file]
For: root
Choose what you want to run: Command
Command: kextload /System/Library/Extensions/smbfs.kext
When: At startup and when saving

Not that you have to worry about it, but on save Lingon X creates an appropriate launchd plist in /Library/LaunchDaemons/

I've tested this on a 2016 MacBook Pro and a 2020 27" iMac, both running Big Sur Dev Beta 6, and both now connect to SMB shares

WOW - that Lingox X software is exactly what the doctor ordered. This is a great tool, and certainly worth it's price...

I've tried installing Big Sur on my external drive.

It started the install process (after I downloaded it...). But I get a security notice saying I can't install this on an external drive?

iMac 2020.

Azrael.

I don't have a 2020; (I have a 2015 MBP 15) I could only install over Catalina. You might have success doing that...

Some YouTube HDR content does not play in Safari on this beta. (Which was playable on beta 4) And we can't disable HDR option in Safari.
For example:

Does anyone else have the same issue?

Works for me. Can't disable HDR though, but at least it works in Safari as opposed to the blown out mess in Chrome.

Yea I thought so.

Do you know of a way to fix it?
Sadly no, you just have to hope Apple fixes it in a future beta installer.

No problemo.

I’ve just left the house with it stuck on the Apple logo to see if it sorts itself out in an hour of doing nothing. Hopefully it doesn’t catch fire!

Next step will be a clean install of Catalina, then upgrade to Big Sur, then migrate from my old machine. Will report back.

OK... so had to do a clean install, then update, then I ran migration assistant. Still working, although when holding Option while booting I have an extra drive to choose from ‘macOS Installer’ which really shouldn’t be there anymore...

You have to revive or restore your mac's T2 chip. When you install Big Sur it upgrades your bridgeOS on the T2 chip to the beta version, and that doesn't get reset with Catalina install.

Otherwise you can wait for a later Big Sur update, which will also update the T2.
