Apple today released a new 7.2.1 software update for the third-generation Apple TV. It is not clear what is new in the update, as Apple has not provided release notes, but it includes several security improvements.

The update is available for all versions of the third-generation Apple TV. It can be installed through the software update mechanism in Settings, or delivered automatically for customers who have automatic updates turned on.

The third-generation Apple TV has been available since 2012 and continues to be sold alongside the fourth-generation Apple TV. The older device does not run tvOS and does not include features like Siri support and access to the App Store, but it offers content through dozens of channels like Netflix, Hulu Plus, and more.

I'm interested in seeing a change long on this. There are quite a few issues when streaming for longer than an hour across several apps.

I wonder what's in the update. I've been thinking about upgrading to ATV 4 for just the Apple Music app alone. I stream a lot of music through my entertainment system in my living room.

"For customers who continue to use the third-generation Apple TV..."

Almost sounds condescending, doesn't it?

Dear Apple,

Why would I update my perfectly working 3rd gen TV when none of the features of the 4th gen have value to me at the moment?

On a related not, thanks for this update, which I was not expecting nor entitled to!

Sincerely,

GenesisST

"For customers who continue to use the third-generation Apple TV..."

Almost sounds condescending, doesn't it?

Sounds better than "for customers who still haven't upgraded to the fourth generation Apple TV..."

How about "For customer's who choose to commit to Apple's base-level ATV, without annoyingly inaccurate features such as Siri, and aggravatingly absent and lackluster apps found (or not found) in the newly established app store."

IF I was to buy an AppleTV, it would be a 3rd gen not used to play content, rather to give me Homekit control when I'm away from the house. If that feature could just be built in to MacOS or a Windows program, I'd go with that. Until that point, I will continue to mull getting one, one day.

We had 4 ATV3's and now have 2 ATV3's and 2 ATV4's, we like the dark UI of the ATV3 but ABSOLUTELY FREEKING LOVE Apps on the ATV4's. Or latest addiction is Zillow, I know, silly, you can look at Zillow on your phone or computer and the ATV4 app doesn't display some pics correctly, but we like checking it every few days to see what is newly listed around us and in certain pockets of town. We are also wanting to turn the current house into a rental and upgrade, this is probably why we are addicted to the app.
