To prevent your iTunes account from getting hacked? (It's a security update.)
I meant the hardware, as in replacing it with a 4th gen. Of course, I will update the firmware on my 3rd gen!
Sorry for the ambiguity

if it wasn't for the missing optical audio (Toslink) output.Spending $200 for an aTV is fine - spending well over $1000 for a new Denon receiver, considering my current one is likely to last another decade or three is out of the question.
Yuck, the bright interface is an awful thing. One could only hope they refreshed the UI like on ATV4 but never gonna happen.
Still no Apple Music. I'd buy an AppleTV 4 today for Apple Music support, if it wasn't for the missing optical audio (Toslink) output. I had the same issue till I upgraded my wifi router to an AirPort Extreme ac. Haven't had an issue since and I'm only on 12Mbps VDSL. I can stream multiple HD streams to different devices without an issue and the Apple TV 3 doesn't hiccup anymore. It used to be atrocious. How about an update that allows it actually stream? On my same network, Amazon Firestick, and even the built in Smart HUB on my Samsung flat screen, stream movies flawlessly, while the AppleTV continually buffers. Getting tired of watching the spinning wheel on the AppleTV screen - even after multiple resets and restarts.
How dare they still use those?"For customers who continue to use the third-generation Apple TV..."
Almost sounds condescending, doesn't it?
If your receiver has Toslink but does not have HDMI, it is old enough to be replaced with something MUCH less than $1000 from Denon. You will get a whole ton of upgrades...including audio out upgrade...for not much money. I know you are already typing in your head "I dont want/need...blah blah"...It's 2016 for christmas sake, if you have need for an A/V receiver, it's time to upgrade to some more current technology...toslink is circa 1990s. If you're talking about your tw-channel audio system then fine...but the ATV is obviously an A/V product.
Sorry but I am so tired of people with outdated old equipment crying about an outdated old technology being dropped.
Besides...got spend $20 on a decent splitter. Problem solved without upgrading the grandpa receiver. I know it's more fun to whine and complain though....
and she has an older iPad which doesn't support the remote App..
I don't understand how there is not even an option of Apple Music on the 3rd Generation. Especially after they took away iTunes Radio.
the darker one on the 3rd gen is so much better, after returning our 4th I was so much happier with the older UIOne could only hope they refreshed the UI like on ATV4 but never gonna happen.
agreed on this, the new remote sucks and the Siri functionality is nothing compared to iOS. returned our 4th gen since I had so many issues (bugs galore) and no Bluetooth keyboard support, new apps on it sucked (even netflix had issues), the remote was so hard to use...I bought the ATV4 for my Mom thinking she could use Siri to do everything. Wrong!!! When I said something as basic as "Start movie over" Siri came back with "I can help you with the following".... What a joke. And that micro touch pad is EXTREMELY difficult to use and she has an older iPad which doesn't support the remote App. At least I was able to program one of her existing remotes so she can use the arrow buttons on that in lieu of that trackpad. But what is the point of the remote if you still have to use other remotes to supplement functionality? I might buy the old remote (with the tactile buttons) for her because the new one sucks. And I am sticking with my ATV2 until these things get sorted out.
My ATV 3 stutters the beginning of every 3rd or 4th song when AirPlaying from an iOS device. Did a full restore of ATV 3, reset AirPort Extreme ac, plugged ATV 3 directly into AEX via Ethernet, still stutters like Mel Tillis. Doesn't seem to be a network or iOS issue since AirPlay to my AirPort Express works fine. I'm hoping an ATV OS update fixes this, but I'm very doubtful if it is just a security update.I had the same issue till I upgraded my wifi router to an AirPort Extreme ac. It wasn't "bricked" if you're still using it. Bricked means something was hosed beyond any attempt to get it to work again. My Apple TV 3 bricked the last time I received an OTA update (wasn't jailbroken). I hope that doesn't happen again.
well, this issue doesn't happen for me and our Apple TV 3rd gens (two of them) are connected via ethernet. seems like your hardware could have a possible issueMy ATV 3 stutters the beginning of every 3rd or 4th song when AirPlaying from an iOS device. It was broken to the point that I to restore it through iTunes. It wasn't "bricked" if you're still using it. Bricked means something was hosed beyond any attempt to get it to work again.
still stutters like Mel Tillis.
Most likely a hardware issue or compatibility problem with your modem. My ATV 3 stutters the beginning of every 3rd or 4th song when AirPlaying from an iOS device. he says it's over airplay (so not through the Internet modem), it's likely an issue with the apple tv hardware or the airport extreme/express being usedMost likely a hardware issue or compatibility problem with your modem.
Definitely not a modem issue as that has no bearing on AirPlay. Conceivably the AirPort Extreme could be a factor, but the fact that AirPlay works fine to my AirPort Express (which is configured to extend the Extreme's reach) would seem to rule that out. The ATV 3 is likely the culprit if this isn't common to others around here. I have another ATV 3 in a guest room that I can bring down to my media room to see if it behaves any better. Thanks for all the suggestions though. Most likely a hardware issue or compatibility problem with your modem.
Well, at least I don't listen to Mel TillisYou're showing your age there!
I have both ATV3 and ATV4. Siri on the ATV4 is remarkably accurate, and incredibly powerful, at least for me. As for Apps; the streaming TV Apps work much, MUCH better on ATV4 than ATV3. And the remote is a giant leap forward. But you are right in that the non-streaming are pretty limited.
