Alongside betas of iOS 15.5, iPadOS 15.5, and macOS Monterey 12.4, Apple today released a beta version of new 15.5 firmware designed for the Studio Display.

Apple in March promised a firmware fix for the Studio Display to address an issue with the webcam, and according to an Apple spokesperson that spoke to The Verge, the firmware beta released today does indeed fix the webcam problem.

The Studio Display is equipped with a 12-megapixel Ultra Wide camera that supports Center Stage, but Studio Display reviewers and owners have discovered that the camera consistently produces grainy, washed-out images, which Apple has said is the result of an issue causing the system to not behave as expected. The firmware brings updated "camera tuning, improved noise reduction, contrast, and framing."

All Studio Display models are able to receive over-the-air firmware updates, but this firmware update is limited to Macs that are running the macOS Monterey 12.4 beta at the current time. After installing the macOS 12.4 beta, Studio Display owners can go to System Preferences > Software Update to install the firmware.

Looking forward to the update. I use a studio display for work and I’m very impressed by it. The camera isn’t “bad”, but not great. It’s marginally better than the 14” MacBook Pro camera.

Framing is another small issue. With the monitor at normal angle to me, my head appears at the bottom 1/4 of the screen since I’m in google meets hours a day. I always have to tilt my screen down to center myself. Perhaps the “framing” portion of this update may fix this, not sure.

Can't wait to hear the new reviews. Still waiting on both of mine to deliver. These things take time so I'm not surprised it took apple this long. I imagine even once it's ready, it has to go through a pretty stringent quality check so that it doesn't cause other problems (which is what caused this whole fiasco in the first place they said).

Today Apple released developer preview of displayOS 27.9.1 to developers …

OMG Apple ?‍♂️

Great news. Not going to order these displays--I will get two--until I know this has been resolved and people have another few months with the display. All going well, I'll be a fall/holiday customer.

It seems like a fairly straightforward issue. The center stage camera in the iPad is 1 foot away from your face, but the same camera on a 27" display is at least twice as far away. This means Center Stage has to crop in to keep your face the same size, so instead of a 1080p webcam it's more like a 480p webcam after the crop.

It will be interesting to see how it's corrected in software.
