I'm shocked it took Apple this long. It's almost May and it's still not out yet. Better late than never, Apple.
Shocked???

There was a problem with the camera. So first of all, let's blast Apple to hell for even having the problem in the first place. Apple is simply not allowed to make mistakes.

Now the problem is being fixed. So let's blast Apple to hell for taking so long (all of a few weeks) to fix the problem. I demand that in the future, Apple fix problems before they even occur.

So what if you’re using the monitor with Big Sur or catalina or iPadOS… you can’t get the camera update?

If you are running BigSur or Catalina, why would you need the update?????? Please read the tech specs and requirements to use the Apple Studio Display. Thanks.

Why won’t it run with Big Sur?

(Other than Apple saying it won’t)

What a strange and frustrating limitation

Okay then… Apple should not have allowed this to happen in the first place.

Products go through months and years of development. They put a small sensor relative to a 27 inch display in this thing, claim it as their best FaceTime camera yet and expect people to gloss over the fact the magnification of the image isn’t a problem.

This wasn’t a ‘mistake’ as you put it, it was a conscious decision to reuse an existing component all for cost saving measures.

Now the problem is being fixed
Is it?…
Is Apple replacing the camera modules in these units? Software ain’t gonna fix that.

Yeah that’s actually possible. It’s called research and development.

Firmware updates for the Studio Display require Monterey

Lol, The camera on monitor firmwares below 15.5 sucks, so if you’re using this display with Big Sur or Catalina or iPad or Windows or Linux, the camera will suck, period. This necessitates a firmware update if you want a good camera experience.

I get that firmware updates won’t work in linux and windows… but not on Big Sur? Some macs support Big Sur but not Monterey. So you mean to tell me that you have to have a Mac with Monterey to use a monitor ???? For some people that means needing to buy a new Mac.

Cany anyone confirm that the Studio Display firmware update popped up in software update after joining the beta program?

Or was the studio display firmware update included inside the 12.4 Beta 3 Update ?

"You need to buy more stuff from us in order to use the thing you just bought from us" is pretty much textbook Apple.

It requires macOS Monterey 12.3 or later, as listed on the specs page. It's not a secret or anything.

I love the ignore feature.
Yep, people are actually complaining to complain now. It's getting out of hand.

So? If you're using the display with unsupported systems, you're bound to run into problems.

i haven’t looked at the specs, I will do so.
I had one monitor that lasted for over 10 years, a champion. It was a 1920x1200 panel, and I sold it a couple years ago. I upgraded to 4k.

it’s not part of my consciousness that a monitor needs a very recent OS version for the monitor to run. Especially since the video signal it’s using is standard DisplayPort (tunneled via thunderbolt). since the studio display works with windows and iPadOS, clearly it technically doesn’t need Monterey to run, but perhaps it needs Monterey to update the firmware.

Unlike a 10 year old monitor, It has a processor that saves computer CPU cycles by taking over a lot of iOS/iPad tasks like spatial audio, Hey Siri, and (in this case) Center Stage.
