Still it’s incredible that they messed up shipping it with a „broken“ OS at launch in the first place and needed multiple attempts at fixing several issues. Not good.
They released a firmware update before it launched, and this is the first firmware update after launch. Both firmware updates were for different reasons…

So? If you're using the display with unsupported systems, you're bound to run into problems.
This is a 100% Apple-created problem. How many displays have you seen on the market where 1) they shipped on day one with a software defect, hindering a major feature that the manufacturer touted as a selling point for that display, and then 2) were so tied to not only a specific operating system, but a specific version of said operating system, that said software defect cannot be fixed for some recent purchasers of that display, unless they buy a new computer or at the very least, upgrade their operating system?

Not too many displays on the market right now where "using with unsupported systems" is even a thing people have to worry about.

I gotta say, someone else put it very well - that $1700 monitor is looking less and less like a good value every time someone writes about their experience with it.

Agreed - it's absurd, and the people carrying water for Apple on this are just .... I don't get it.

Shocked???

There was a problem with the camera. So first of all, let's blast Apple to hell for even having the problem in the first place. Apple is simply not allowed to make mistakes.

Now the problem is being fixed. So let's blast Apple to hell for taking so long (all of a few weeks) to fix the problem. I demand that in the future, Apple fix problems before they even occur.

That's pretty good! Pretty much captures the juvenile outrage seen here daily.

It didn’t need immediate fixes though. Everything worked. This firmware improves image quality, but the camera and center stage features were functional.

C'mon - at least debate in good faith

You know darned well that camera wasn't up to advertised specs at launch

"it still worked but looked like crap" isn't the bar Apple should be held to here.

Unlike a 10 year old monitor, It has a processor that saves computer CPU cycles by taking over a lot of iOS/iPad tasks like spatial audio, Hey Siri, and (in this case) Center Stage.
That still doesn’t explain why Monterey is needed, the studio display is using an a13, which is an older iPhone soc, and that iPhone soc didn’t require Monterey for updates as Monterey didn’t exist. So why does the studio display require monterey.

I imagine it’s related to the fact the Mac Studio it launched with as a companion ships with Monterey, so that would be the priority.

I imagine Apple would devote additional resources to software development and testing if they think enough people running Big Sur would buy this a a second monitor.

I absolutely love the Apple Studio display. It's simply gorgeous. Yea, Apple screwed up the camera. Hopefully it will be fixed. I believe what we often see here is a childish need to over-exaggerate and perseverance of the need to complain.

What does happen "every time someone writes about their experience with it" is to diminish the credibility of posts on this and many other forums.

You mean, those things that literally nobody asked any monitor manufacturer to support, ever?
Exactly. The studio display in its current incarnation is confusing. If it is truly for offloading tasks to the monitor as the commenter claims, then why only support Monterey?

The computers that support Monterey especially on the apple silicon side are already pretty beefy. Many of the computers that would have benefited more from having tasks offloaded don’t support Monterey, so def a missed opportunity.

Your post was going along just fine until you felt the need to denigrate folks who don't see things as you do.

That's a shortcut to "creating arguments & division".
Please consider not name calling and denigrating. It ruins the forum.

As would most devoted iFanatics.

It is painfully obvious that Apple devoted engineering to exactly one aspect of this monitor - add as many talking points as possible to justify the price, while making it just different enough from existing displays to make it easy to deflect real-world comparisons. If we can snag a few extreme loyalists into ditching their 5k LG's because of a small brightness-bump, even better.

Apple devoted diddly-squat to QA on this project. The engineering team was clearly being led by the marketing team.

@jakey rolling

I really do think you are onto it here..
The Apple review/podcast/vlog-osphere was clamoring for Apple to "just take the LG or iMac 5k panel and put it in a case and sell it!"

They did essentially that and then pulled out the parts bin to find a way to get their normal healthy margin built into it.

That's essentially what they released.
Same panel with a different case, calibration, meaningless brightness bump and a bunch of spare iOS parts and ideas...and a silly price (especially for the height adjustable part -- that's flat out gouging people)

Compared to the LG and 5k iMac, 20% brighter isn't a small bump. EDR support is nice to have (but not essential). It does have wider viewing angles and better dynamic range than both panels as well.

I'm not sure where you get your information, but it's obvious you aren't professionals in any of the industries this display targets.

No one will have a meaningful answer to this question. It will only be speculation and more Apple hate.

About how long will it take new shipments of the display to arrive to customers with the new firmware already installed?
