Its to do with air pressure... dont worry, planes are pressurised properly!

So these figures quoted are just in case you drunk too much redbull and floated up to 10,000 feet?

With all the bitching and complaining it almost sounds as if no one is interested in the new PowerBooks (I refuse to give up the name) which means mine will get here sooner. So continue. :D

i thought most other manufacturers are treating the 2ghz + Yonah's as top of the line and their consumer being 1.5 & 1.67....

not yet... Dell is not even offering Dual Cores as an option just yet... Gateway does not start shipping until februrary (although they do offer the 2GHz at an extra cost of $250), and they only have one Dual Core model. IBM/Lenovo thinkpads only have the 1.6 and 1.8 just like apple. Sony are yet to release Dual Core...

The only manufacturers that have real Dual Core laptops on sale are third rate manufacturers like Asus and Acer, who are generally well know to adopt new technology quickly (they are in Taiwan, so they get quick access to new products), but are not known for a decent build quality.

That's what I know anyway... feel free to prove me wrong!!

Ah, so you are going to be buying one? Great news, Silicon Addict, I know you've been waiting since Christ was a cowboy for a decent PowerBook (I like the old name too). When I saw the details of the update and how good it was I thought of guys like you and were happy for ya. ;)

i think you will need to change a little more than just the harddrive to make your Mac run windows...

exactly why you would want to run windows, I really have no idea

Umm maybe because some of us have apps that DO NOT exist in OS X. Three off the top of my head that I use almost daily. Microsoft MapPoint, Microsoft Access, and IE for our company's time tracking system. And watch. $50 to a charity says that the week the first MacBooks start showing up Windows will be running on it. There is NO reason why Windows shouldn't run perfectly fine on it. ATI Drivers? Of course. Bet money the WIFI they are using is Intel's radio so that isn't a problem. If its an Intel Chipset then that too shouldn't be a problem. Booting? Doubt that is going to be much of a problem either but of course we know little on how the MacBook’s BIOS are setup. If, again, its using Intel BIOS its going to be piece ‘o cake.

Here is why the single FireWire 400 port is a problem...<snip>
Crikey

so, i have complained about the powerbook for audio for a year and then i am soooooooo happy when i look at the specs for this newfangled ma.cb...powerbook. and then i see that there is no FW800...."that sucks...hard" then...THEN...i see that there is only one FW400 slot...."fr#!@#1" but i continue to plan my procurement of this device. and then you make clear my one apprehension about this...FW situation and i freakin have a doubt.

thank you.
i have a doubt. daggumitall. that IS a HUGE problem. i would have realized it at purchasing time (still have to wait a month and a half to order since i have handle a few debts first) and i will no doubt buy, but i will buy knowing that i may end up buying a rev b if it has 2 ports. but...can i put ports in with the pci express slot? that would make happiness.

Buying one? Heck I was monitoring the freaking store through the entire keynote and purchased one when it came up. :)

1.83Ghz, 2Gb RAM, 100GB HD. Still had some money left over. That's what happens when you wait 3 years. :D

How about us students who don't want to dish out $2000+ on a laptop? When will the iBook be updated and what does Apple have planned for people in our price bracket? Why no mention of lower-priced products today, just an upgraded, more expensive PowerBook?

well, i am a student...and i don't WANT to spend 2000+ dollars ...but...it is a choice...

i would have been far more bothered by only catering to the consumer level...they have that pretty well covered at the moment.

Apple is in the business to make money, but lets not forget that Apple has custom chip sets and architecture for these machines...not to mention the OS is far different. We can't really compare PC and Mac performance until we can get some real world testing.

what's so custom about the architecture and chipset? Anyone? As far as I can tell, the only thing custom is whatever allows osx to run on it. Which I think is just a bios thing.

i guess.....

i wasn't really impressed.
everyone hyped up this macworld with all these crazy rumours.
i mean seriously. now i actually WANT apple to make the plasma screen thingie. it sounds a lot cooler than a new imac, and poorly named Powerbook.
sorry. i'm sure they're great computers and all, but i was on the edge of my seat when he said "one more thing". yawn. where's that next revolution, steve? that plasma screen with a built in mac isn't sounding too bad.....

But will there be iBook updates? When?

buy an iMac (1299 or less with student discount) - I'm guessing iBook replacements shortly after the time they start shipping the PowerBook - patience young grasshopper they don't have the processors yet :)

if it were "black" i'd buy it in a heartbeat. but there aree way too many questions to go be a guinea pig for Apple Labs.

I am no guinea pig.

Yeah, If I were black i'd buy in a heartbeat too.

Sounds like you made your purchase then.

I want one too, but I'm waiting for more info on stuff like battery life, how much better it performs over the 1.5GHz G4 PB, and what apps can and cannot run on this new PB.

So you would rather have that honkin' big metal tube straddling the top of your PowerBook instead? Yeah, that's a lot more functional and practical...

Well in a way, yes. While it may be practical and functional for some people, others have no use for it. I myself have no use for an iSight, if I did I would buy one separately. I have also read that others find the inability to point the camera in a separate direction to the actual computer a problem also. I suppose it just comes down to personal preference. If you use an iSight then you're in luck, because its integration will be very useful.

No need to get rolleyed ;)

Thank you. I don't think they'll use BIOS. Then again, they won't need it. People don't seem to believe around here just how versitile XP is at booting hardware. x86 people know all about it. It will boot Windows, I am sure of it.

My guess is the iBooks will receive the single core variant of the Yonah, which is scheduled to be out in a couple more months.

Well, not according to Steve Jobs. When he announced the switch to intel, he specifically stated that you could install and run windows on an intel mac. But you would not be able to run osx on a non-Apple product.

So what are you referring to? Is there something people don't know about?
