I still believe, that tha APPLE followers are way to forgiving, and lenient when it comes to Steven's decisions to steal FiWi800, a DL DS DVD drive, a modem, 60 pixels horizontally, and give us only 2 USB's. If i buy a USB Modem, one port is gone...
Why can't the (smart) man that he is, see that his worshippers are willing to pay for what they want, including a colorMAC.

😀

I honestly haven't used a modem since around 1995. In my view, having a modem on your laptop is like having a floppy drive in there. I do not want it as a default part of the setup.

I never plug piles of USB stuff into my laptop. One USB slot would suffice for me. Does anyone really sit down with their laptop and plug in ten USB devices? If you are chaining your laptop with all those wires why don't you have a deskop instead? On the rare occasions you do need more than two USB connections on your laptop just use a hub. I'd rather two USB connections and a slim effecient design than 4 or 5 connections and a hideously oversize laptop.

I have never, at all, ever, used FW800 or a DL DS DVD. I also can't foresee me using either in the future. Who does? Even though you are negative about the lack of both I bet even if they were there you wouldn't be using either. Everyone keeps moaning about oh no firewire 800 and oh no DL DVD but can you show me one person who would actually use either of these on a portable device? Let's not have bloat for no reason. If it's possible to fit a DL DVD in the same form factor then go ahead but if it's not then don't increase the machine size just for these.

I respect your comment.
But you do not need a lot to be happy, and many do. Consider this, you travel around the globe, you do give presentation, which you actually create, then burn on a DL DVD drive. There are many countries without broadband, and hotels which only offer a modem connection... So, I buy a laptop, and still like to have choices what to use often, and what not so often, but still do.
Steven gave us a faster processor, and a camera, he literally took away the doubler layer DVD Superdrive, modem, 60pixels on the screen, FW800 (essential for professionals)... We still get a beautiful machine, but ony 2 USBs, hey.... And of course I like one in orange, yellow or whatever.
WIlling to pay for extras, if available.

Best😀

Meh, I travel internationally on average about 2 times a month in Europe and North America. I've stayed in the best hotels and the worst and I still haven't used an old style modem in years. Hell, nowadays it's getting impossible to find a spot where you can't get wireless access.

I do create and do presentations by the way. To give the presentations I either use my own laptop, email it to the organisers or simply use a USB key to transfer it. I've never created a presentation that took up more than could be held on a single normal CD never mind a DL DVD and if I did I'd prefer to use a network to transfer it rather than waiting on a DVD to burn.

I'm not saying we shouldn't have all the extras you're talking about I just simply think they aren't a big deal to the majority of users (including pro-users) and that people would prefer a slim, mainly smooth laptop than a big fat one with a pile of ports.

I have a laptop and have a USB Hub.. two USBs are just not enough...

- Logitech Mouse reciever
- Printer
- Multiple Flash memory card reader
- iPod

I could unplug each of these as I need them, but a USB Hub is more convenient.

One USB device may suffice for you, but many people want a portable computer - I don't need to take all my USB devices everywhere.

I would say a lot of people would find the extra capacity in DL-DVD-RAM very useful...

Modems - yes, IMO too they are a lot like floppy drives. If it reduces the cost of the machine, the remove it. If you need one, shell out the $35. BB is very common place, in Europe, north america and elsewhere.

... with your argument, but there are places on earth which are not so civilized yet😛 and if I get a USB modem for 50 bucks, I use up one of my port, which leaves me with just one for my ext. HD. If I create a presentation I burn 8 disks with the new drive and almost half that with my DL...
In any event, we may get the deal I want with the 17" MBP... maybe even a yellow one, haha😀

I can't see the MBP not having a DL so you'll be happy with that. However, I doubt it will have an inbuilt modem since the new iMacs don't have them either. I think Apple are choosing to phase them out rather than not putting one in the 15" MBP due to size constraints.

I also don't think it will have more USB ports (the current 17" PowerBook only has 2). You should really just get a USB hub. I used to use my PowerBook at home with an Apple cinema display, iPod, phone, mouse, USB headphones and PDA. Instead of plugging in a pile of things everytime I sat at my desk I just plugged all the USB stuff into a hub which meant I only had to plug in power, video and one USB connection.

17" is a bit too big for me as I would hate to lug that around airports but I hope it turns out to be the machine you're after and suits all your needs.

You must create some pretty hefty presentations to take up that much space 🙂

Choices

For everyone who wish they had a modem, FW800, DL DVD, etc. I feel your pain. I wish we had a choice of screen resolutions. I'm still using a 17" G4, and will be until they come out with a screen that's not 100+ DPI, because I can't stand having to work a foot from my laptop in order to see things.

well, for what it is worth, i do NOT forgive apple for taking away FW800 and putting in the small express-card port.

the 60 pixels thing is strange to me though. it doesn't REALLY bother me, but i don't like it.

but on the topic of being too forgiving; i have consistently considered the 15" my model of choice since looking at the powerbooks. up until now that hasn't really been of consequence though, because i haven't had enough money for any model. i have had the money for a new comp since januay and am waiting for the 17" precisely because of FW800, screen resolution, expresscard etc.

that said, i may end up buying the 15" anyway if there is no update soon. this is a like a war of attrition.

LOL I remembered when I first ordered my first PowerMac G4 in May 2003. I just took modem off my custom list and I saved like $35 dollars. I'm happy that I'm no longer modem-lover 😉

All is good with the 17" MPB.....is it?

Hi friends!
Looks like Steven heard us. The 17"MPB Pro has all he couldn't deliver in the 15". Funny, but the Superdrive did fit into the old 15".
On the new lfagship we have 3USB's, FW800, and the HD DVD burner. W😱nderful. Do I have to wait for the Rev.2 which will probably have the Merom? Or is the Core Duo 2.16 good enough?
Another item: how do I get my AVATAR into the post? Anybody?
Ciao
😀

At the time of me writing this post you are 472 posts short of an avatar... and don't spam 😱

Does this mean I have to write "472times" only good things about the new MB and MBP??😛
Before I buy one of those wondermachines, I think Steven has to solve the quality issues of the new books. Being arrogant about a good product is one thing, but being arrogant and ignorant about serious quality isues is not.

There's a lot of talk about the probems surrounding the new MBP's. But how can one let Steven (whom I always admired for his foresight) know that so far ASUSTEC is delivering too much high tec junk. Until this changes I wait.

😡

I don't know about you but Steve didn't hear me. I want a 15" laptop not a 17" one. And all of that talk that intel doesn't support FW800 and all of that other malarky was quite put to rest with the 17" announcement. I suppose it is possible, though unlikely, that they developed it since the 15" was announced, in either case I would expect the 15" to be updated to at least match ports with my 15" PowerBook, and put the DL SD that newer 15" PowerBooks had.

I will never get used to MacBook either. Sorry 🙂

Adding to the DVD DL and 15-inch MacBook Pro discussion.

While I was happy to purchase a MacBook Pro (on April 15, 2006, SN W8611, no processor whine, case is a bit warm right above the mag power plug), I almost didn't due to the lack of the DVD DL drive.

I've yet to burn a DVD DL disc, so some may ask... then why the need?

Being a laptop, it would be nice to have that feature for the future when I plan to burn more data onto a single disk. I mean, I can use my LaCie external DVD DL drive to burn discs, which is not a problem, but it would be nice to have a DL drive for the road for those "just in case" scenarios.

As for the FW800 port or an extra USB, I would take the extra USB over adding in a FW800 port.

I plan to add another 1gb of RAM to my MBP, but for now, it's really not a bad system. I've had a couple of hard freezes where it stalls and won't do anything. A reboot and saving my work often helps.

I'm curious if something like Pioneer DVR-K06 will fit. This drive will fit in a Mac mini without an issue. Just curious if anyone has considered upgrading their DVD drive in their MBP.

In my case, I have never used more than 2 USB devices at the same time. My LaCie Triple Interface drive has two FW800 ports for daisy chaining hard drives, if I only had FW400 I couldn't get the speed from other drives because it would have to pass through a much slower FW400 or USB2 port. Also, if I really needed that third USB port, I could just hook up my LaCie drive and use its port.

Of course I have my printer hooked up to an Airport Express (though I don't know why anyone would need their printer hooked up to their laptop 24/7) so I rarely even use both USB ports. Your mileage may vary.

That's a good option. I carry a small 11-in-1 card reader, as well as my iPod, Treo 650 sync cable and tiny 4-port USB 2.0 self powered hub with me in my laptop bag. I normally only have one item plugged in at a time, so the hub is more along as a backup if I need 3 things plugged in at once.

Having those other ports on the LaCie is definitely nice. I leave a 4 pin - 8 pin firewire cable on there so that I can plug a DV camera in quickly and keep the cable out of the way of my laptop.
