I have both also. Mainly for the amazon prime video, and ps vue. But i would ditch the amazon box if they would just enable psvue on the apple tv.

It's tough because I like the design of the Fire remote better but Apple has the volume function and better HDMI-CEC, it also has a pretty good setup and being IR is great for less complex set ups - like the bedroom. I like that apps all behave pretty much the same on the Apple TV but I like Amazon's video and ecosystem better (slightly less walled garden). Even their universal search is superior since it includes apps and their Prime video now and being able to sideload is pretty great. It really sucks that there hasn't been a winner in this space yet.

I have one Apple TV, and one Amazon fire tv box. I am actually getting used to the Fire tv. The only thing I miss from the Apple tv is the ability to airplay. But I mainly use the psvue app to live stream. Which I can't do with every tv everywhere app on the Apple TV. And Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Video, plus Kodi. So unless Apple steps up it's game. The Amazon box will be my go to box for now.

Right because Apple can't update the color/uielements on every stock app. When they are able to do updates to almost every app in a new major release. Not apples and oranges in the slightest.

I'd say that it is less about whether or not you can and more about if you should?

I once worked at a company that maintained multiple skins for the same software product. Believe me, maintaining those over the years was a major nightmare. You end up spending 80% of your resources just maintaining compatibility with those instead of innovating something new and useful.

No hardware reason to update until Apple unveils their Movie/TV service which will likely be updated to 4K and require a new box.

The existing hardware is powerful enough for anything they can throw at it. Other than 4K, what would you want in a new box?
I would not know to be honest. I've never had an Apple TV so I just didn't wanna buy one right before they announced an update.

Since Apple didn't actually announce the tvOS 10 launch date at the iPhone keynote and they recently discontinued Apple TV 3, it seemed like they might announce a new Apple TV plus release tvOS 10 with the potential Mac keynote next month. But now that they've released tvOS 10 with iOS 10, it's seems less plausible.

In case you are wondering, there doesn't seem to be an update for the remote firmware so don't bother trying to do it. It is still 0x0245.

So did i read that correctly? There is no single sign on with this update? That would be disappointing

EDIT: Apparently it isn't in this update. Classic Apple. Over promise, under deliver. Let's hope we don't have to wait much longer for that feature.

Single sign in was the one thing I wanted from all the OS updates today. Fantastic job, Apple.

I can't think of any reason why they'd update the AppleTV until they're ready to announce a 4K video service. It's safe to buy now.

Yes it is apples and oranges, you completely missed his point.

For the single sign on. I think there were 3 things planned with that. The single sign on. A guide from Apple that would list all of your live tv programming in one place. And these providers would also have to enable live stream on the apps, for those that don't have live streaming right now. I think you would need all 3 to have everything work properly. Or at least I think that was Apple's goal at one time.

I don't think it has anything to do with live streaming. ABC has been streaming in limited areas on AppleTV for over a year, same with Showtime etc.

The way it is set up the cable company requires you to prove your TV subscription is active once a month. This requires each and every app that is tied to a cable TV network to be logged into once a month. The new system would make it so that when you sign in it signs you into all the apps that the Cable TV provider qualifies you for at once, rather than individually.

I know how that works. But what I meant is not every app has live streaming. For example USA only shows recent episodes of its programming. So does MTV and other apps. I think they wanted to reach a point where they either had their own streaming service. Or had all the network providers provide live streams of their apps. And they would have a guide for all the apps. This is what I was looking forward to have happen at some point.

Oh I see what your saying. That is up to the TV networks, Apple can't make them offer live streams as I'm sure you are aware.

There have been rumors of Apple having a TV Guide like app to show what is available live, however it has never been announced as a feature. I'd love something like that, however trying to get the TV networks to agree is something Apple has had a hard time accomplishing in the past.

I updated because MacRumors article said that single sign in was a part of today's install. If I had known I would have to sign back in to every single app to use it, I would not have updated at all.

HomeKit via Siri on tvOS is fantastic! It's actually faster than on the iPhone or Watch. It's instant.

Red lights: BOOM! Turn off the living lights: BOOM! Set the temperature to 23: BOOM!

Siri has always been noticeably faster on AppleTV. My guess is that it can be always ready since it's always powered and doesn't have to save a battery. HomeKit reflects that speed. It's amazing.
Probably because if you have an Apple TV, I think it becomes the hub that controls much of HomeKit and enables things like remote access and also bridges to BT devices that are within range, but out of range of your iPhone. This could remove the middle man, depending on your configuration, I think?

What is the deal with Apple servers lately? I just started downloading TV OS 36 minutes ago. It still says 2 hours remaining. I have a 30MB connection and the Apple TV is right next to the Airport 'Extreme' router.

Apple today released tvOS 10, the latest operating system designed for the fourth-generation Apple TV, bringing a range of improvements that make it easier to locate and watch content on Apple's set-top box.

tvOS 10 can be downloaded over the air through the Settings app on the fourth-generation Apple TV by going to System --> Software Update. Those who have automatic software updates turned on will be upgraded to tvOS 10 automatically.

In tvOS 10, Apple has brought improved search, expanded Siri capabilities, a new dark mode, a Continuity option for using the iPhone for text input, automatic download of universal apps, and more.

With tvOS 10, Siri is able to search for movies by topic, bringing up content around a theme like "high school comedies from the 80s" or "movies about dinosaurs," and a new Live Tune-In feature lets Siri go directly to a live channel in a supported app.

A Single Sign-On feature for pay TV apps that lets users sign in once with their cable credentials to access all live cable content included in a cable subscription was supposed to be included in tvOS 10, but it appears Single Sign-On was not included in the first version of the operating system and will be coming at a later date.

Third-party apps can do more in tvOS 10 with developer APIs for recording and live broadcasting, accessing iCloud Photo Library photos, using HomeKit, and developing games with more complicated controls that necessitate a game controller.

iOS 10 features like the Apple Music overhaul and the new Photos "Memories" feature have been ported to tvOS, allowing users to access the new Apple Music interface and view favorite Photos memories.

Well, I'm extremely happy with this update. Dark mode is very welcomed and they finally made available Siri in Mexico for Apple TV, and it works great.

But surely you've already signed into everything by now no?
[doublepost=1473896947][/doublepost]I've not seen any App updates for iOS 10 yet. Pretty disappointing but I guess there isn't too much new in the SDKs.

Still not a complete experience for me until we have Spotify and Amazon Prime. I'd have thought Spotify would be jumping at the chance to get the App on the TV. Especially with their excellent cross-device remote control feature.

On the other hand the Channels App is absolutely fantastic and using Plex as a DVR is suburb (albeit in beta).
