Well tvOS 16.1 did not fix the issues that started in 16.0 with Philo TV and Acorn TV apps. Some of the Acorn TV streams open right up, but some simply never do, they just give a spinning icon then a solid gray screen. Philo TV has multiple issues that started with 16.0 including having to restart it every few hours because it can no longer update its Guide page so you can no longer select a channel to watch. I’m sure these are due to tvOS changes in 16.x.

I’ve got a new Fire TV Cube 2022 coming tomorrow because I’m so tired of the ATV 4K and tvOS screw ups. There is no excuse for such shoddy programming…

My carefully curated Watch Now is wiped out. Just a listing of Apple TV+ shows. iPad and iPhone are fine. Sigh.

Edit: went in to settings and noticed a “finish signing in with iPhone”

That fixed it.

TVOS is just ios with lipstick
No its a lot more specialized 24/7 distribution tailored to HDMI/HDCP output thats makes iOS/IPadOS apps incompatible so you need to have separate tvOS apps for it. I wish it used iOS/IPadOS but Apple has purposely closed It off for their limited types of ATV devices.

tvOS 16.1 (20K71) versus iOS 16.1/iPadOS both are (20B82).

Hopefully this fixes the many HomeKit issues people have been reporting.
It did for my sensor and sensor/time-based* HomeKit automation issues, which now work again :)

Phew! That saves me deleting and recreating all of my automations, which was the only other recommendation I'd seen.

* Turn Hue lights on when Hue sensor detects movement, and then off after no motion detected for 5 mins etc

I guess they need the training data from consumers in order to get better, so it’s a catch-22. Google had a first-mover advantage and people were excited by it when it first came out, trying “Ok Google” out in all sorts of ways and giving the AI the early training it needed. And as we know, AI gets better in an exponential curve very quickly, even as people tapered off using voice commands over the years.
First Mover? Google Assistant debuted in 2016, Siri debuted in 2011.

Your theory is flawed.

Yep, it fixed the issues I was having as well. I had a few simple shortcut automations that just refused to run. Things as simple as "If light is on turn it off, otherwise turn it on" were not running for me. 16.1 seems to have resolved it.

Library tab still broken for large media libraries on Apple Hardware. Works if you run it on TV from Samsung, LG, etc.

The contempt Apple has for it’s best media customers is baffling.

Still Movies iTunes app and TV Shows iTunes app plays at a higher bitrate than that Apple TV plus app so who cares except those that want to see their entire collection in the library tab. Yes there are some that worry that Apple will eventually remove those two iTunes apps. But they got nothing better to offer so far until someone wants to do some major changes to tvOS updates.

seems like DV is bricked on hbo max as of 16.1 for me.... only outputs in sdr. netflix and + work fine in DV, only HBO max is whack

I have experienced that when having the hue sensor turn on and then turn off after 5 minutes, not all of the lights gets turned off from time to time. Is that the issue you’re talking about?
Right now I have two extra automations that each triggers on two different lights when they turn off, setting a “off” scene, then turns off all lights (again) making sure all lights are off.

Yes - exactly that sort of thing. Some of the lights weren't turning on even though the Home app showed that the sensor had triggered. After a few days' more testing, I think it's much better under 16.1 but still not perfect (one of the lights in the scene remains on when the others have turned off after the 5 minute timeout).

I'm looking forward to receiving a new ATV 4K gen3 at the weekend (I'm upgrading for the Thread, and for the improved remote and CPU from my gen1). If the Home automations don't work any better with it, I'll start removing and re-adding them and see if that helps...

This update sucks, it’s much slower on my original Apple TV 4K, it also no longer remembers my selected receiver as the default output instead it default outputs to my TV speakers which I never use. It was poorly tested.

This thing also keeps playing my music from my music library intermittently, I’m trying to play TV shows, it’s the most annoying thing ever. Apple’s quality control is in the toilet these days I think.

An update after upgrading to iOS/tvOS 16.2: HomeKit is much improved and feels like it's the best it's ever been. Still not quite as reliable as Hue (but I really want to standardise on HomeKit), and time will tell, but so far, so good…
