I have heard of that option too. Don't do it. It didn't work. I believe is all has to do with the MINI. I have tried and tried different things with no consistency. Sometimes it works but eventually it stops. The only TRUE fixed is when I used an AppleTV has the hub - then my automations work perfectly!
Wow, that’s a bummer to hear. I saw a thread on Reddit where someone did that and it worked, and then the person that posted here. Bummed to hear it didn’t work for you. Stinks that there’s not a 100% success rate way to do this.

Apple today released new tvOS 16.3.1 and HomePod 16.3.1 software updates, with the software coming two weeks after the tvOS 16.3 and HomePod 16.3 updates were released.

HomePod-2-White-and-Midnight-Feature-Purple-Orange.jpg

According to Apple's release notes for HomePod software 16.3.1, the update includes general performance and stability improvements. Notes for tvOS 16.3.1 are unavailable as of yet, but are probably similar to the HomePod notes.

The tvOS 16.3.1 update can be downloaded over the air through the Settings app on the ‌‌‌‌‌Apple TV‌‌‌‌‌ by going to System > Software Update. ‌‌‌‌‌Apple TV‌‌‌‌‌ owners who have automatic software updates turned on will be upgraded to ‌tvOS 16.3.1 automatically.

‌‌‌‌‌HomePod‌‌‌‌‌‌ software is installed automatically on the ‌‌‌‌‌‌HomePod‌‌ unless the feature is disabled‌‌‌‌, but the ‌‌‌‌‌‌HomePod‌‌‌‌‌‌ can also be manually updated in the Home app by following the instructions in our HomePod‌‌ update how to.

Software Updates are under General in iOS, iPadOS & macOS, but under System in tvOS. Unify.

My Siri response times are definitely better now, but I still have 3/9 HomePods showing as “no response” in HomeKit for some unknown reason. Even a restart won’t fix the no response issue.
Have you tried turning your phone off and on? It worked for me (regarding no response from HomePods)

Mine came out of not responding this afternoon, for whatever reason. Still no working on first Siri attempt, annoyingly (not that these issues were related, of course).

Anytime my hub switches to one of the hp minis, like when the atvs update, everything goes to crap. I'm convinced it's the anemic wifi chips on the homepods.

OG was working fine after 16.3.1 however now 1 day later I’m getting, “there was a problem completing your request”. Again…

I posted earlier about having problems before the update (“There was a problem completing your request, try again in a moment")

after the update, it seemed to be ‘fixed’ for me.

today, I’ve noticed a couple more failures again, where I get that annoying response.

BUT, it’s working *most* of the time now, which is way better than before (for me). very frustrating that Apple can’t just fix this.

To me a lot of the problems seem Siri related server-side issues that come and go with annoying frequency.

Sometimes it works fine, sometimes it just wont work at all. This is down to Apple's servers mainly im sure.

What ive found is that if you take away Siri from the equation things mostly work fine most of the time. instead of using Siri to select music, and choose speaker(s) just do it on the phone through the music app and then tap the speakers you want to hear it on. In my experience this works mostly - and is far more reliable than Siri.

This is, however, unacceptable. The HomePod experience should be Siri first and foremost and that primary control mechanism needs to be flawless and Apple need to invest time, money, and resources in making it so - especially as they have designs on the multi room music smart home experience.

Given Matter's launch - you'd have though that companies like Apple would put a hell of a lot more effort into their proprietary systems such as HomeKit and the Home app as going forward Apple users will not feel the need to stick with the Home app and will certainly just move to another option if Home and Siri are continually rubbish.

LIke others I still have a few issues after the 16.3.1 update.

  1. Automations are not as reliable as they were in 16.1 and will randomly fail.
Annoying as I have spent a long time getting my family to buy into the idea of home automation and its benefits.
  2. My Apple TV's (both 4K) have never auto updated, they always needs to be manually updated which seems odd.
  3. After an update of the Apple TV the remote invariably goes rogue and constantly raises the volume, this is resolved by resetting the remote after which all is fine.
  4. My Netatmo carbon monoxide keeps disconnecting Homekit, and needs to be added as a new device.

Time will tell if this update stops all my hubs (2x Apple TV and 7x HomePod Mini) randomly going offline for a short period meaning all automations stop working.
This never happened in 16.1 and only happened after the update to 16.3 and the new architecture.

If its of any comfort, i dont think ive ever had any of my Apple TVs automatically update software in all the years of owning almost every model they have released!
I always have to manually instigate the update - and it doesnt even prompt me to tell me there is something waiting - If I didnt read about it on macrumors then id be none the wiser!
Mind you, I also have my iPhone that steadfastly refuses to automatically update apps - no issues with iPads but the iPhone just wont for some reason!

Im one of the (un)lucky ones who "successfully" managed to upgrade to the "new architecture" (whatever that actually means!) during the 5 minute window Apple actually released it to the world before withdrawing it.
Does this put us in a better, or worse position than everyone else? Who knows - I still get loads of issues and theres just no way of knowing what is the cause - maybe this new architecture is a problem maybe not.... It's very conspicuous how long this has been withdrawn for and not even making it back in time for 16.3 does not bode well in terms of the issues it's obviously causing.

I am the same, no Apple TV has ever updated, seems an odd problem to persist for so long.

I thought I had done a good thing updating to the new architecture at the time, if only I had been a bit busier and put it off for a while!😂😂
Hopefully the architecture issues will be resolved soon, maybe 16.4? Fingers crossed.

Exact same here. 16.3.1 fixed “ask twice” on Monday, but by Tuesday it was back.

It gets worse. My daily “goodnight” scene left six lights on last night. 1 in 6 failure rate. Took me three “goodnights” to get them all off. New architecture. Worst ever.

Your move Apple.

well, at the time, I must admit that apart from the pain of having to have every single device at 16.2 before it would kick off the "architecture" upgrade... the actual process itself seemed to happen quickly and without fuss.
Also, post update I didnt experience any of the issues that many others seemed to have reported and therefore was the catalyst for Apple to withdraw the software.

I do wonder where that leaves us brave pioneers who have the new architecture... is it riddled with bugs or are we just lucky not to get any of those initial faults... and more importantly will we factor in to the next rollout where presumably we need an update too?

Who knows.

Two OG homepods. New architecture. 16.3.1 fixed the ask-twice for a few hours, now it’s back. 6 x HomePod minis are all fine.

Wow. All my automatons were working yesterday, at last, and I got all excited. This morning, lights work but anything playing Apple Music does not. So much for waking up on time this morning. "Test this Automation" also does nothing for those. Restarted phone and HomePod Mini several times.

All I want is the remote fixed in the new tvOS. Pain in the ass with multiple disconnects each week. Should have never upgraded my ATV in the living room and main bedroom as there is basically no improvement from my 2021 ATV.

I just realized these were the only two software updates this week. I thought the rest would have come soon after but so far, nothing yet. There isn't even 16.4 beta still. Kind of interesting from Apple.

Probably because everything is still broken in 16.3.1 and they’re in panic mode.
